It is already November. I find this hard to believe or to accept. It seems we are well on our way to winter, observing the storms that have hit across North America (metaphorical and otherwise),
while we in Crescent Beach are addressing our very own beloved swamp, complicated by high tides. I sometimes think that I might be well advised to posi- tion a lifejacket under my desk chair or ensure we secure a lifeboat on the back of the Dining Hall, just in case. I find it interesting how Mother Nature can force us to be present, to listen and to observe, all the while forcing us to fend for our lives. My experience is that we, as human beings, have a tendency to try to direct our world. My caveat is that sometimes we need to take our lead from Mother Nature, not to stand still, but rather to allow ourselves a voice, to be heard. It is all about perspective, and what each of us chooses to glean from our experiences. Somehow this brings me to our recent Annual General Meeting, where I’d first like to thank everyone who came out to participate. This served as a reminder to me that when we gather people together, amazing things can happen! In an attempt to summarize and share the learnings more broadly - Jenn Beavington, our Community Pro- gammer, facilitated a Community Conversation around ‘What is a Neighbourhood House’. We had ‘old tim- ers’ and ‘newcomers’ attend and participate; we heard stories about our history and observed where our cur- rent direction is overlapping with that of our founders. What resonated for me was the message of inclusion, framed in different language, by different people, but always coming to the surface.
This is our broad goal, and the over-arching goal of all neighbourhood houses: ‘Room for everyone.’ There are times I know that we are moving in the ‘right’ direc- tion, having glimpses of success, but there are mo-
ments when I know we have work to do. When I hear from newcomer volunteers that they feel people are ‘afraid of them’ because they are not from here, or when I hear from a Crescent Beach resident, another volunteer, that they have only had a handful of their neighbours wave and say hello over the three years they have lived here, I know that while much good is occurring, there is still much to do. I am thankful for the people that are interested in joining us on this path to creating community, and recognize the commitment and dedication it requires for positive change to occur. There will be more opportunities to participate in community building activities - we look forward to having you joining us! In the words of Margaret J. Wheatley
“Relationships are all there is. Everything in the universe only exists because it is in
relationship to everything else. Nothing exists in isolation.
We have to stop pretending we are individuals that can go it alone.”

It’s time to say goodbye. After 11 years of writing these articles, I’ve decided to cut back on my activi- ties and have some free time to pursue new ad- ventures. I leave you with my best wishes, my final crossword puzzle, and the hope that you keep get- ting your fingers dirty in the soil and derive constant pleasure from it. It’s been a wonderful experience… Estelle Bogoch (Horticulturalist, Horticultural Therapist, Landscape Designer, Instructor)
And thank you Estelle for contributing articles for all these years, and helping all of us become better gardeners, creating beauty in our neighbourhoods and reaping the fruits (or vegetables!) of our labours. We’re going to miss all the gardening knowledge you were so willing to share!
So long, Estelle and ‘Thank You’

Career and Education Exploration Program We would like to thank VanCity for providing Alexandra Neighborhood House’s Reconnect Youth Services Program with the funding to facilitate this employment group for youth on the Semiahmoo Peninsula. During the six week project seven youth ages 14-16 spent three weeks learning interview skills, workplace etiquette, stress management and how to build their skills inventory. On completion of their training the youth worked for three weeks as volunteers at Petland and Hillcrest Bakery. All the youth remarked on how great it was to get some hands-on experience and how they felt it would benefit them when they were looking for employ- ment.
A big thank you to Petland and Hillcrest Bakery for hosting the youth during their volunteer place- ments, and to the Crisis Centre of BC for facilitating an excellent group on stress management skills. And a special THANK YOU to the youth who par- ticipated in the program as they are what made it fun and successful!
