Dear Members! At the outset, let me wish you all a very happy rain and monsoon. After the hit loaded month of may, the June month comes with the beautiful rainy days and it gives us new energy to gear up and increase pace of the work and to head towards the hectic July and September. Specially as this year, the June month shall have special importance because of proposed implementation of the GST from the month of July.
Rajkot branch, in the last month organized dedicated programs on GST like Compliance under GST, GST Public awareness seminar, a study series on GST for 10 days, which was a very welcome step and remained useful for the participants along with the full day seminar on IndAS and lecture meets on recent topics like RERA, Benami Property Act, SFT Reporting.
After successful completion of ISA PT Course Batch, the branch has planned a GST certificate course in this month from 3rd week which is the prime requirement of this time. The National conference to be held on 10th & 11th shall also be of great advantage for the members for updating knowledge of GST and ICDS and its immediate implementation. Adding to the tradition of branch and considering benefits of Yoga, this year branch has organized a Yoga week celebration with a very unique 2 days retreat program “Live a Miraculous life” by Shri Dharmesh Shah. I request members to take maximum benefits of the same.
After successful completion of the CPT June batch, the branch is pleased to announce CPT December Batch, IPCC Group 2 Batch and batch for the IPCC Group 1 shall be announced very soon.
The branch shall be shortly inaugurating members lounge (library cum meeting area for its members) as per the planning. Members are requested to share their expectations and suggestions for the same via mail.
Point to Ponder: “Transformation literally means going beyond your forms and abilities…”
Regards!

The problem at hand is "current storage technologies can no longer keep pace with exponentially growing amounts of data," therefore; the solution is "DNA data storage." As humankind progresses, the amount of data we produce and consume has been growing considerably. Gone are the days when a 1.44Mb floppy disk could fulfill our needs. This continual increase in data necessitates a more robust and durable data storage device.
DNA contains information about a living organism. It codes everything in an living being. That’s why it makes sense for corporations like Microsoft to invest in research that studies how DNA can be used to store data. Unlike most of the existing data storage devices out there, DNA doesn’t degrade over time, plus it’s very compact. For example, just four grams of DNA can contain a year’s worth of information produced by all of humanity combined.
It Can Last a Century
Humanity’s means of keeping data intact have greatly improved over the years. We’ve moved from paper to magnetic film to microchips. But DNA presents an even better option.
DNA has several big advantages. First, it is much smaller than traditional media. In fact, we showed that we can reach a density of 215 Petabytes ( 2,15,000 Terabyte) per gram of DNA. Second, DNA lasts for an extended period of time, over 100 years, which is orders of magnitude more than traditional media. Try to listen to any disk from the 90s, and see if it’s still good.
This technology could be made available, well, with an optimistic estimate. It would more than a decade, Researchers said. “We are still in early days, but it also took magnetic media years of research and development before it became useful.” This opens the possibility of using molecular biology tools to assist computing. we are simply producing too much data for magnetic storage to keep up, without a major unforeseen shift in the technology.
That’s why a company like Microsoft recently decided to invest in the prospect of storing information with a totally different sort of tech: biotech.
What is DNA storage?
DNA storage is the process of encoding and decoding binary data onto and from synthesized strands of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). In nature, DNA molecules contain genetic blueprints for living cells and organisms.

How do DNA store information
DNA stores biological information in sequences of four bases of nucleic acid — adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C) and guanine (G) — which are strung along ribbons of sugar- phosphate molecules in the shape of a double helix. Taken as a whole, this package of DNA serves as its owner's complete genetic blueprint.
They had to convert the digital code of 1’s and 0’s to a genetic code of A’s, C’s, T’s, and G’s, then take this lowly text file and manually construct the molecule it represents. Each of these is a feat in and of itself. DNA storage requires cutting-edge techniques in data compression and security to design a sequence both info-dense enough to realize DNA’s potential and redundant enough to allow robust error-checking to improve the accuracy of information retrieved down the line.
How much data can be stored in DNA?
One gram of DNA can potentially hold up to 455 exabytes of data, according to the New Scientist. For reference: There are one billion gigabytes in an exabyte, and 1,000 exabytes in a zettabyte.
What is a holographic drive?
A holographic disk is a form of data storage designed for computers, created by InPhase Technologies. The smaller holographic drives can store thirty times the information of a Blu-ray Disc.
How is the information stored in DNA?
Genetic information is stored within the chemical structure of the molecule DNA. The molecule consists of: Two backbones, which spiral around each other in the well-known double helix formation. Strings of four chemicals, called "bases", running along the backbones.
Last year, Microsoft said that it has successfully managed to write and recover data totaling to 200MB in synthetic DNA, now it's ready to have a fully functional DNA storage within next few years.
Here's all about it. Increasing amount of data is being churned out every day, all of which can't be saved due to storage crunch, thus; alternative measures are being explored. Karin Strauss, Microsoft's lead researcher said to MIT technology review, "DNA is a good storage medium because data can be written into molecules more densely than the basic elements of conventional storage technologies can pack it in."
DNA: Building up a large-scale DNA storage system
After their breakthrough, Microsoft last year was "interested in learning whether we can create an end-to-end system that can store information, that's automated, and can be used for enterprise storage, based on DNA," said Kavin Strauss.

However, there was a major hiccup, as custom DNA molecules which would store this data were expensive and therefore, it wasn't commercially viable for a large scale model.
Space: Why is it exciting?
Although pricey, the rewards are also high, DNA can hold 10,000 terabytes of information in a cubic millimeter; to put things into perspective, imagine all the movies in the world stored in a space as big as a sugar cube. All the data in the world meticulously stored within a fraction of space - this is the goal.
Microsoft is, however, not planning to put all its eggs in one basket; what it is now doing is, creating a "proto-commercial system in three years storing some amount of data on DNA in one of our data centers, for at least a boutique application."
Doug Carmean, partner architect at Microsoft Research said, "We hope to get it branded as 'Your Storage with DNA.”
Future: Is DNA the future? Maybe
This is a highly experimental method of storing data and even Microsoft Research spokesperson upon inquiry said that "specifics on a product plan" is not available at the moment.
It is not understood as of yet that how Microsoft has managed to bring down the cost factor under control either.
All said and done, this does mark an important milestone towards data storage technology.
