A Message From Fr. Matt ...Dear Brothers and Sisters,I have a niece named Ceci who is a pretty amazing young woman. She is one of the smartest people I know and she just graduated in the spring from one of the best law school’s in the country at the top of the class. She got a great job at an amazing firm in Washington D.C. Plus, she is just a really good human being. I am very proud of her. When the shut downs happened, Ceci moved back to her parent’s house. She is still there, working remotely until all of this stuff changes. While she was home this summer, between studying for the bar exam and watching The Bachelor and The Kardashians, Ceci decided to challenge herself. She would see things that she liked, such as dressers, tables, and desks, and instead of waiting until she made some money to buy them, she decided to teach herself how to make them. The garage in my sister and brother-in-law’s house became a woodshop and Ceci has made beautiful things. Recently, as Ceci was putting a piece together in her room late at night, my sister heard the banging of a hammer, then Ceci exclaiming, ”Yes, Queen!” as she finished her project.Yes, Queen! I don’t know if you have heard people saying this or not recently, but it is kind of a new phenomenon. I think I know what it means. I might be wrong, but if I’m right, I like it. I think it means that she has what it takes. That she, as a woman, doesn’t have to sit by and wait for someone to swoop in and save the day. She is good enough and smart enough and if she doesn’t know how to do it yet, she will learn. That is a good thing. Yes, Queen!Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Each year, the Readings for this feast are a little different. Some years we focus on Jesus the Crucified King. Some years, Jesus the Shepherd King, and some years, like this one, Jesus the Judge King. Really, each year of the cycle has some part of the others involved as well, but this year is the Judge. We don’t much like thinking of judgment. In fact, part of the sentiment of the ”Yes, Queen” thing is that we don’t want other people to judge us, or tell us what we can or can’t do, or what we have the ability to do. There is a popular tattoo I have seen that says, ”God alone shall be my judge.” Basically, they are saying, keep your opinion of me to yourself. But the thing is, the tattoo is right. God will judge you. God will judge me. Our Readings this week make that very clear. We use all kinds of sweet words to talk about Jesus. We focus on His Love, His Forgiveness, His Acceptance. But today we are faced with His Judgment. It is an essential part of His Kingship. If we don’t take this seriously, we are denying Jesus one of His sovereign rights as King. If He is our King, He is our Judge. We need to say ”Yes, King!”The King makes it very clear how we will be judged. It isn’t just about going to Mass and Confession and saying our prayers each day, as important as that is. The Readings tell us explicitly. Have you shown mercy and compassion to the least of His people? This means two things. First, have you been generous with your time and your money? There is an old saying, ”You can’t take it with you.” While this is true of money and status, your charity you will take with you. How generous are you with the poor? It will be your evidence at the Judgment. The second way that Jesus means this is to think about the ”least” people in your life. Take a moment and think about all of the people who are a part of your life. Make a list in your head. Put the ones you love the most on the top of the list. Put the ones you love the least at the bottom. Dorothy Day says that we only love God as much as we love the people we love the least. How much love do you have for the ”least” of your people? That will be your evidence at the Judgment. So today let us say, ”Yes, King!” to Jesus. Let us recognize that Jesus alone will be our Judge, and hear His message to us. Love the least, in our community and on your list. It will be your evidence before the Judge, Jesus Christ, the King.Peace and Love,Fr. Matt
