In a Second

I had just sent a text consoling a friend on

Auburn’s heart-breaking, last second loss to LSU,

when we backed up the TV broadcast and saw, as I

live and breathe, the folks in Orange and Blue

celebrating. One Tiger coach lost their job last

Saturday, and it could be that his identity changed in a second.

It’s amazing how quickly things change, isn’t it? Logan Martin goes

from full pool to a collection of sand bars in just days. One day, a

child is barely speaking a syllable and the next is asking, “Father, may I

have more apple juice, please?” From healthy and strong to frail and

drawn, our very lives can change overnight.

We’ve seen lives of faith do this too, haven’t we? One day, my Uncle

Wayne was too scarred from the church of his childhood to consider

being part of one as an adult and then before you know it, he’s in the

back of the sanctuary running the sound booth. One day a child is

running the nursery staff wild and the next she’s standing to read

Scripture in morning worship. A casual observer might wonder how

this can be. One who travels the road with Jesus, though, knows full

well the effect of the carpenter’s son from Nazareth.

Now, maybe the metaphor is rough for Samuel Skillman (our church’s

resident LSU fan), but we know that sometimes a second can spell the

difference between winning and losing, between a second chance and

a lost job, between brokenness and a transformed life. So, knowing

the preciousness of the time before us, how are you spending your seconds

with God? Join us this Sunday as we resume our “off season” worship

schedule with Traditional worship in the Sanctuary at 8:30 and 10:30

and Wide Open worship in the Beacon at 10:30.

Peace of Christ, —Byron
