WONDERFUL COUNSELOR
by Pastor Ken McIntosh
I enjoy reading a good mystery, and one of
my favorite fictional detectives is Merrily
Watkins, Vicar and ‘Deliverance Consultant’
for the Anglican Church in Herefordshire,
England. In her most recent novel, Merrily
describes her pastoral work this way:
"If you ever reach the stage where you think
you know what you're doing, you're probably
on the cusp of screwing up. You have to feel –
know -- that you're not in control but you still
have to give everything to it. That's faith."
That’s a good summary of how I often feel as
a pastor.
It may seem odd - or frightening - thinking of
work where one acknowledges he or she is
“not in control but you still have to give
everything to it.” But it’s not just ministers
who feel that way, I suspect we can all relate
to that. And this is where I’m thankful for
the Holy Spirit.
This month we celebrate the descent of the
Holy Spirit upon the church at Pentecost. I
like to celebrate Pentecost in a big way,
because it is such a day of Good News. The
Spirit came into the church –and that means
you, me, and Honeoye UCC! And She is still
with us every day.
Jesus says in John 14 “The Paraclete, the
Holy Spirit whom Abba God will send in my
name, will instruct you in everything.”
Paraclete is a Greek word that means
something like “advocate” or “representing

agent” or maybe “defending attorney.” She
(Hebrew Ruach/ Spirit is feminine in
Gender) is God-who-is for us as advocate,
beside us as counselor, and within us as our
life-force.
The Apostle Paul in the Book of Romans
Chapter 8 says “The Spirit, too, comes to help
us in our weakness. For we don’t know how to
pray as we should, but the Spirit expresses
our plea with groanings too deep for words.”
Many times I’ve been in situations where I
truly don’t know what to do, and I just say a
simple prayer, “Help!” And then I say
something and…it works out. Amazingly.
I thank God that Spirit works in my life, and
in yours, and in the lives of innumerable
individuals—whether they acknowledge her
or not. We have good reason to celebrate
again on this year’s Feast of Pentecost.
Pastor Ken will be out
of the office June 18
and June 19. He will
be available by text.

“I love spring anywhere,
but if I could choose,
I would always greet it in a garden.”
— Ruth Stout
Spring will come (in spite of the clouds and
rain as I write this in mid-May), and
summer will follow, and our Garden will
grow. You will notice some changes in the
garden this year. The brick work on the
back wall has been completed. A window-
well was installed to help with water
management. Sadly, the lilac bush had a
scale which had spread and so the plant had
to be removed. Thanks to the members of the
Board of Christian Education who donated
an Azalea bush in honor of all the Sunday
School teachers and volunteers. And last but
not least, by the time you read this a tree
will have been planted. Thanks to everyone
who has helped to bring about all these
positive changes in the garden as we look
forward to seeing God’s grace unfold in the
garden and world during the coming
months. Kathy Kimber

always drinks, treats, and discussion about
what the passage means, to the church, to
the world, and to each other.

Greetings from the Board of Christian
Education! Several items to report this
month.
Our regular Sunday school year has come to
an end and we thank Beth Stowe for her
faith and dedication to our youth!
Throughout the summer months this year,
different from previous years, there will not
be any children's activities during worship.
We will have activity bags available for
younger children and for older children we
will have worship scavenger hunts. For those
who need it, there is nursery care available.
If you have a young person who is in the
range of grades 7-12 and would like to
participate in next year's confirmation class,
please complete the registration form, which
can be found in the church office or on the
church website, and send it to the church
office.
Game night will be taking a break through
the summer months. Stay tuned for the next!
Thank you to Ken and Marsha for hosting
this fun event!
What if the whole church read the same book
and that book was the Bible?? The BCE is
planning to offer a read the Bible in a year
program beginning in the fall. Let us know if
this is something that interests you!
Sincerely,
Shannon Seddon and Gwen Rowley
I want to thank all those that lead and
supported our Sunday School program this
year. I feel truly blessed to walk my
personal faith journey along side you. I want
to give a special call out to Gwen Rowley who
took leadership in our preschool room,
creating a beautiful hands on environment
for our youngest Christians to learn and
grow in. I hope you all have a blessed
summer. I already have exciting ideas for
next year! See you in September.
Keep the Faith,
Beth
Join us on Wednesday, June 19 at 6:30 PM
as we continue to discussion from last month
discussing the “Tao Te Ching” by Stephen
Mitchell or Ursula Le Guin.

I hope that I have not used this article about
Wedding Guidelines before. I am not sure when it
was written. Our daughters Carol and Janet were
married in the 1960’s. I do not remember that they
did this. If you have read it before, just skip it.
Wedding Guidelines
• Because of the seriousness of marriage the
Pastor made the final decision at which
weddings he would officiate - need for pre-
marital counseling - couples readiness - church
makes a spiritual commitment to couples if
couples have a church affiliation. They are
always welcome to the Honeoye United Church
of Christ.
• Couples were invited to select their own
scriptures, choose instruments and music and
write their own vows.
• It was expected that the Church organist would
be the organist at the wedding. The
remuneration was $30 unless other
arrangements had been agreed upon.
• The pastor received at least $25 if neither of the
couple or their families were actively connected
with the church.
• Custodian received $10 – no rice, confetti or
bird seed.
• Rehearsal was an important part of the planning
- be sure all participants arrived on time allow a
full hour.
I also found this article about the Food Pantry that
may easily be a repeat.
The pantry was started at St. Mary’s church in
1982. Room was available in the old kitchen area in
our church and it was moved here in 1993.
Before that Jan Burgwart ran a small version from
our old kitchen in 1991.
7
Joyce Janoski (St. Mary’s) and Lindy Bruce (UCC)
were the capable coordinators in 1993. At that time
boxes would be pre-packed – every box ready for
distribution on Tuesday and Saturday mornings.
People were asked to call ahead, but if they didn’t
someone was available to take care of them. If you
were “on duty” it was your responsibility to see that
there were always 4 boxes ready to go.
I well remember Joyce Janoski (what a dedicated
lady she was) saying, “I would rather give to 3 or 4
people who did not need it than deny someone
because I thought they were free loading.” Any of
us who have worked at the Food Pantry know that
through the years there have been free loaders. I
understand there were a few people who made it
their “job” to go from town to town for
contributions.
I am very pleased that many of the people who
come today are working but need a little extra boost
to help them.
To go back –
Renee and Tom Thornton came aboard. They
changed the system so that people filled out a paper
when they came checking what they would like for
the month. This was an excellent idea – after all you
can only use so much rice or canned spinach. In
addition, each family was given a voucher for Shur-
Fine for eggs, bread, and milk. Tom and Renee
made lasting friendships. The time came when they
felt that they had to “give it up” and Don Fox
became the new “Top Dog” in 2012. He is still
going strong. I will remember his first day on the
job. He came in and sat on one of the benches
waiting patiently until someone came in who
needed help in carrying out their bags. Do you
remember that day, Don? I am pretty sure it was in
2012.
For several years, the Pantry was open on Tuesday
and Saturday mornings. Now it is open the first
Saturday of the month – if a client has problems in
between they can call Don and he will go to their
rescue.
In addition to the items, they can check in the paper
given to them when they come in - there are fresh
fruits and vegetables and boxes of items from Food
Link to choose from as well as a cart containing a
little bit of anything and everything. On the paper
they also have a choice of one meat (usually at least
3 kinds) and 5 other items that vary from week to
week. Since the pantry is only open once a month,
now they get 2 vouchers from Shur-Fine.
The food is supposed to be a 2 day food emergency.
I do not eat a lot but except for milk I think I could
have enough to last me the whole month.
You are lucky that the fingers and the mind decided
to be brief this month.
Maybe another month??? Who knows!
Join us this month as we
gather together for a
screening of "As It Is In
Heaven", a 2004 Oscar-
nominated dramatic comedy
from Sweden.
A successful international conductor
suddenly interrupts his career and returns
alone to his childhood village in Norrland, in
the far north of Sweden. It doesn't take long
before he is asked to come and listen to the
fragment of a church choir, which practices
every Thursday in the
parish hall. Just come
along and give a little bit
of good advice. He can't
say no, and from that
moment, nothing in the
village is the same again.
The choir develops and
grows. He makes both
friends and enemies. And
he finds love.
If you'd like to join us for dinner @ 6 PM all
we ask is that you bring a soup, salad, bread,
or dessert to share. Somehow it always
seems to work out with no formal "menu" :)
You are also welcome to join us @ 7 PM for
just the movie and conversation that follows.
We'll provide the popcorn!

An Exciting Summer
Travel Opportunity
Explore Celtic Christianity:
Pilgrimage in England/Scotland
Have you ever wanted to do a walking
pilgrimage, like the famous Camino De
Santiago? How about doing that in the lovely
hills of Scotland and England, with learning
about Celtic Christianity?
This summer you are invited to join fellow
members of UCCNY, and ecumenical friends
from the UK, on a walking pilgrimage in the
British Isles! Members of the United Church
of Christ New York Conference have been
forming relationships with the Northern
Synod of the United Reformed Church (our
church counterparts in the UK).
Resulting from that, there will be
a partnership pilgrimage walking Saint
Cuthbert's Way. There are places for 15 UK
participants and a matching number from
the U.S. Dave Herbert, the charming and
knowledgeable URC Conference Minister,
will lead the pilgrimage adding insights and
devotions. St. Cuthbert's way is a 60 mile
walking pilgrim path through the Cheviot
hills on the Scottish Border, from Melrose
Abbey in Scotland to Holy Island Lindisfarne
in England. You can see photos and details
at stcuthbertsway.info.
The pilgrimage will take place from July 21
to 27 and cost approximately $400 US (at the
current exchange rate). There will be
comfortable lodging each night at Galashiels
Scotland and walkers' luggage will remain
there (you don't have to carry everything in
your packs). For more details email
If you wanted to extend a time of spiritual
growth, the following week, July 29- Aug. 2,
Kenneth McIntosh, pastor at Honeoye UCC,
will lead a retreat at The Open Gate retreat
center on Holy Island Lindisfarne. Holy
Island is a special, sacred place for Celtic
and early English Christianity. Ken's retreat
will be based off his book Water from an
Ancient Well. Details and prices can be found
at www.aidanandhilda.org.uk and drop down
on the menu to "Retreats and Events
Programme at Holy Island Lindisfarne."
Save the Date! July 28th is the annual church picnic at
Helen’s house after church. Please
bring a dish to pass and a lawn chair.
Hots, veggie burgers, hamburgers, rolls,
condiments, and lemonade will be
provided. There is boat riding, bocci,
swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and
fishing available. Please come and
spend an afternoon with us.
