which settled upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in foreign tongues,

An Interview with Father Jeffrey M. Rott We will soon bid farewell to our Parochial

Vicar, Fr. Jeff Rott, after his five years at St. Jude Church. He will be leaving us on June

16 to become the Administrator of St. Laurence Church in Upper Darby, Delaware County. While we’re excited for him, we will

miss him. Fr. Jeff shared with us some thoughts about his time at St. Jude and his

hopes for the future.

Q: What does it feel like to go to a new parish? A: It always makes you feel a little nervous, but it’s exciting, too. It can be challenging, but you’re there for the people, to pray with them and help them to grow in their faith.

Q: What have you liked about being at St. Jude for the past 5 years? A: I think I’ll miss the special needs community the most. They brought me the greatest joy – there’s a unique sense of love and kindness that flows from them. St. Jude also has a wonderful group of people with deep faith who want to grow closer to the Lord, and that’s really special, as well. And finally, I have to say, I’ve been so impressed by the great talent it took, from Monsignor Beach and Deacon John Riordan, to renovate the church. It wouldn’t have happened without them.

Q: What can you tell us about , St. Laurence Church? A: Well, I’ll certainly know more when I get there, but I do know that it has a very diverse community that speaks three languages. They have a school that supports both Catholic and non-Catholic children in the region, and as Administrator, I’ll have the opportunity to use my financial background as a former CPA to help the parish grow.

Q: Do you have a final message you’d like to share with us. A: Thank you for your faithfulness to the Church during these tough times. Our Lord never promised that it would be easy, but He set the example for us. Love one another as He loves us.

Thank you, Fr. Jeff. We will miss you!

My Friends in Christ:

PARISH ALTAR SERVERS

As the school year comes to a close, I want to recognize the years of selfless service of our 8 eighth grade Altar Servers. I want to thank them personally for their dedication and faithfulness in serving at the altar of the Lord. I especially applaud those who have chosen to continue in this important ministry into their High School years! Our 8th grade Altar Servers serve as wonderful role models to our younger parish family members. As a result of their example of service, we have 16 new younger boys and girls who have signed up to be Altar Servers. Deacon Tim has completed training them to serve at the altar. With our new recruits, we will have a total of 66 Altar Servers. I should note that I am equally proud of those students who have chosen to transition into the role of Lector. I am greatly encouraged by the increasing number of young people proclaiming the Word of God so joyfully. This is a wonderful way to keep our young people active in their faith and close to God. Congratulations and welcome all to the altar of the Lord!

ST. JUDE SCHOOL EIGHTH GRADE GRADUATION

One of the proudest moments for parents, teachers, principals and clergy is to celebrate the Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Exercises for our elementary school graduates. This Wednesday, June 12th, the class of 2019 will graduate from St. Jude School. The Church will shine with pride and happiness of family and friends. The evening will be filled with gratitude to God for the blessings that our graduates received during their time at St. Jude School. During the commencement exercises, our graduates will receive recognition for their academic, athletic and service accomplishments. They leave behind a rich legacy as they look forward with hope, enthusiasm and great anticipation for all that lies ahead. Please join with me as we congratulate and rejoice with the following members of the St. Jude Class of 2019:

Our annual Maroon and Gold day events were held last Friday, making for a very

happy ending to the merry month of May at St. Jude School! Students from Preschool to 8th grade enjoyed a day of games and fun with classmates as we near the end of another happy school year. Thank you to Mrs. Walck, our faculty and staff, parent volunteers, and our 8th graders for a job well done!

Our Preschool, Pre K, and Kindergarten children joyfully celebrated their closing ceremonies last week. As always, our St. Jude School family enjoyed our youngest members and all the happiness they shared with us this year. May God continue to bless them and help them remember that they are precious in God's eyes and ever close to His loving heart. Wishing a happy and safe summer season to our little ones and their families!

Our entire school community lined the hallways to wish a fond farewell to our eighth graders as they took their traditional "FINAL WALK" through St. Jude School Friday, June 7th. The name of each member of the Class of 2019 was announced and students, faculty, and staff greeted them with our good wishes, high fives, hugs, gratitude, and prayers, sending them on their way out the doors of SJS onto a bright and hope-filled future. Family members waited for them outside to congratulate them and encourage them to continue onward and upward to success in High School. All the best to the Class of 2019!

Give a Gift of Hope Since the year 2000, Bethlehem has been getting worse due to the unstable political situation causing poverty among Christians still living in the Holy Land. People have turned to rely heavily on the Olive Wood Business

and it is now the main income of many Bethlehem families. What once was a heavy tourist area is not anymore due to fear. So now we must travel to keep our income afloat.

On The 29th and 30th June, the Shepherds will display carvings after all Masses at St. Jude Parish.

The revenue generated helps to restore justice to an oppressed Palestinian Christian minority, supports over 300 families of skilled carvers and helps in keeping a Christian presence in the Holy Land. Your purchase, however small or big, will be an act of social justice as well as provide an opportunity to own or give as gifts original folk art from Bethlehem.

Treasures From Our Tradition

Today we are at the fiftieth day of the Easter celebration: seven weeks of seven days, a week of weeks, now culminating in a festival fiftieth day. While the liturgical color of the Easter season is gold, on this last day we have red. For the fir st thousand years of the church, there were no firm rules for using colors. Only wealthy churches could afford a full array of colors, and most places used the best vestments, no matter the color, for the greatest feasts. The Church spelled out an exact plan for color, including red for Pentecost, only in 1570, but local differences held on until the 1800s. Color experts tell us that red is a hot color, best used for fast-paced, upbeat, active experiences. It is hard to be neutral before red, as any matador will tell you. It invites commitment, draws you in. It is a stimulating color, engaging the eye, stirring hunger. It is the most fitting color for this day when we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit into our lives, a dynamic presence overturning neutrality in favor of passion and commitment.
