Mission: To glorify God by ensuring that adults with developmental disabilities have a permanent and safe home where their abilities and potentials are respected and nurtured in a Christian environment.
From the Desk of Stentson Carpenter
The last few months have been very busy and news worthy. We have been securing new work for our residents, expand‐ing our greenhouses with more hor cultural projects and ren‐ova ng our Strickland/Stringfellow house into an Intermedi‐ate Care Facility. The addi on of this home to our Intermedi‐ate Care program, along with our Davis/Orman medical home, allows us to be er care for the more fragile residents. We have also renovated our old voca onal building into a Fit‐ness/Wellness Center to accommodate our ICF popula on and we’ve done much needed renova ons to the administra‐on building. Our need for growth and the quality care and
needs of our residents con nue to be an all‐consuming job. My job as CEO has shi ed a lot the past few years. I know a li le about all of the working parts that make up Rainbow Omega, but con nuing to see the bigger picture, it is people and businesses that have made Rainbow Omega what it is today. Trying to figure out what ma ers most at Rainbow Omega con nues to be my top priority. It is a passion, not just a job, to help individuals, parents, families and companies work together to expand op ons and increase opportuni es for people with disabili es. Our Birmingham dinner in May and our latest dinner in Huntsville were both a big success. These dinners help us con nue to grow and provide the best service, educa on and employment for developmentally disabled adults. I support each of these factors because every individual is unique in their own way. We try to provide the best integrated se ngs that are appropriate for each individual based on informed choices. I appreciate all our friends of Rainbow Omega. Visitors are always welcomed for a tour of our facility. Please call any‐me for an appointment.
Sincerely,
“Happiness doesn't
result from what we get, but
from what we give.”

Bill Jones, our oldest resident, turned 88 years young February 25. “Uncle Bill” has been at Rainbow Omega since 2002.
In Memory... PHILIP KENT YOUNG passed away Monday, May 6, 2013 at Stringfellow Hospital in Anniston. He was born Septem‐ber 15, 1956 in Jackson, Mississippi, and was a long me resident of Auburn and more recently the Rainbow Omega Intermediate Care Facility. He is survived by his mother, Roberta Young of Auburn; brother, Frank Chester Young of Denver, Colorado; two nieces, Heather Young of Brooklyn, NY, and Helen (Ricado) Carmona of Emeryville, Califor‐nia.
Philip is remembered as a jokester. Anyone he could play a joke on he would and laugh to no end. He was a die hard Auburn fan and an avid wrestling fan. For as long as his mind allowed him, he was a dear and true friend to many, especially John Stewart.
DALE FLEISCHMANN was born in Birmingham and is the youngest son of William and Mar‐tha Fleischmann. He has one brother, Kris Fleischmann. Dale was 61 years old. Dale graduated high school and a ended a state technical college for a couple of semesters. He worked at Work‐shops, Inc. for approximately 25 years doing a variety of work including janitorial tasks. Dale came to live at Rainbow Omega, Inc. (ROI) in April 2003. He worked at ROI voca onal center un l he sustained a broken hip. He then became a resident of ROI/ICF. There he liked to assist the kitchen staff with sor ng, bundling and wrapping the silverware for meal me. He enjoyed listening to music and would tap his foot or clap along with certain songs. At Christmas, Dale liked to sing Christmas carols and he had a nice singing voice. Dale maintained much of his independence, even a er breaking his hip. It was well known by everyone that Dale liked to change his own sheets. He knew the code to the laundry room so he’d take his linens there, obtain clean linens and then make his own bed. Dale liked doing puzzles and coloring but mostly, he loved wri ng le ers to his mother and did so o en. He kept the le ers he received from her and other family members in his room in a specific place where he could see them. He carried his latest birthday cards in the pouch that hung from his walker. Dale took comfort knowing he was loved by his family.

Community Founda on Presents Check
Rainbow Omega received a grant for $250,000 from the George & Louise Ritch Designated Endowment Fund with the Community Founda on of Northeast Alabama. This grant provided funding to help renovate the ex‐is ng Strickland/Stringfellow home to a medical facility. Built in 1999, the home was named the Strickland/Stringfellow home hav‐ing received a $100,000 construc on grant from the Susie Parker Stringfel‐low Health Fund of the Community Founda on. Now named Strickland/Stringfellow Medical Facility, the home went from eight residents to ten and a full me nursing staff to provide 24‐hour care. As a community founda on, the Community Founda on of Northeast Ala‐bama uses donor gi s to grow funds that benefit the community forever. A few years ago, George and Louise Ritch, well known pharmacy owners in the Mountain Brook area of Birmingham, worked with the founda on to establish an endowment fund that would support the work of Rainbow Omega and Ritch House, the home for their granddaughter, Alison. Today, their legacy is carried out. Alison is pictured on the back row, third from the le .
Jennifer Maddox, President and CEO of The Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama, presents a check to Stentson Carpenter. They are surrounded by residents of S/S House and other members of the foundation.
Re‐purposing at Rainbow Omega The recent conversion of Strickland/Stringfellow House to the Strick‐land/Stringfellow Intermediate Care Facility has been long awaited. With many residents needing full me medical care, the house went through a renova on. Two resident rooms were added and also a nursing sta on. The S/S ICF has an around the clock nursing staff. This project was made possible by grants and private dona ons. Rainbow Omega ap‐preciates everyone who contributed.
The Hendrickson Voca on Center is now Hendrickson Fitness & Wellness Center. This is an area where residents are brought in to engage in developmental ac vi es and enjoy different stretching techniques. It can also be used for group mee ngs and recrea on. In the photo to the le , Ma hew enjoys some “mat me.” Below the mul ‐func on area is set up for a mee ng space and on another day, ICF residents are par cipa ng in a group ac vity.

Atlanta Dinner The 12th Annual Atlanta Fundraising Dinner was Thursday, April 11 at the Hilton Atlanta Northwest. The stormy weather put a damper on the a endance but it was s ll a good event raising over $38,000. Dewey Bozella, 2011 recipient of the Arthur Ash Courage Award, shared the story of his 26 year incarcera on for a crime he did not commit. He was exonerated, released and now shares his story of courage and forgiveness. Mr. Bozella (center) is shown in the picture on the le with Rainbow Omega Residents, Chase Whitley and Gene Patrick.
Birmingham Dinner
The 21st Annual Birmingham Dinner rose to the occasion as a “Celebra on of Hope.” This year, instead of a keynote speaker, we had a program bringing the past and present together with a glimpse at the future of Rainbow Omega. Dr. Vance Moore, Vice‐President of the ROI Board, shared exci ng news about the conversion of the Strickland/Stringfellow house into a second intermediate care facility. An excited John Southerland, ROI Resident, spoke from his heart of how from the first day he arrived, he has felt a sense of family, he has made so many friends and loves being here. His comments touched everyone and they responded with a standing ova on. Mike Oatridge, Vice‐President of Honda Manu‐
facturing of Alabama, who had recently toured Rainbow Omega, complemented the voca onal program on the outstanding job they do packaging the owner’s manual kits for every car that comes off the line in Lincoln. He commented that Rainbow Omega’s work can be found in Honda vehicles all over the world.
ROI Resident, Jared King captured the crowd’s a en on by preforming “A Dream Is A Wish
Your Heart Makes” on the piano. Jared began music therapy by taking piano lessons about ten years ago. Videos of Jared can be seen on YouTube by typ‐ing in his name followed by the words “au s c piano.” The closing speaker for the evening was Chris Kyker, Rainbow Omega Con‐sultant, who gave a history of the beginning stages of Rainbow Omega. When searching for informa on on how to start, Stentson Carpenter flew out to Abi‐lene, TX to consult with Mrs. Kyker. She gave him three things to do and thought she wouldn’t hear back from him, but six weeks later, he called and said he had done the three things, now what! That began a rela onship and
put mortar to the dream that is now Rainbow Omega! At 88 years young, Kyker is an advo‐cate for senior adults and the developmentally disabled.
A er expenses, Rainbow Omega ne ed $65,000. Thank you to everyone who a ended and gave.
