It takes time to adjust to hearing aids so begin by using your new hearing aids at home, either alone or with one other person you know, so you become familiar with the change in the way you are hearing.

Please do not judge your hearing aids prematurely. They have been designed specifically for your hearing loss and fitted to give you the best speech understanding possible.

Having realistic expectations about your hearing aids will help you to better understand the benefits they can provide. It takes time for your brain to adjust. Work with our staff during the early adjustment period to gain confidence and skills.

Wearing Your Hearing Aids: The First Week

TIP: In humid climates or whenever you perspire, remove your hearing aids and use a dryer nightly. Ask the Hearing Aid Center staff for additional recommendations on how to dry your hearing aids.

Don’t wear your hearing aids in the shower or when swimming.

Keep your hearing aids clean.Clean your hearing aids once per day.

TIP: Do not spray anything directly on your hearing aids.

When not wearing your hearing aids, store them securely.

• Hearing aids are small and easy to misplace.

• Store your hearing aids in their case and away from pets and small children.

• Avoid placing your hearing aids in a tissue or pocket even momentarily.

• Store your hearing aids. Choose a specific location to store your aids when not wearing them.

During your first week, it is important to note situations where you heard well and those that were challenging for you. Please make notes below and bring this journal to your next scheduled visit.

Expect to clean and care for your hearing aids often. Earwax and moisture are the top two causes of hearing aid problems, so be sure to give your hearing aids the attention they need.

Expect your hearing aids to function better with periodic maintenance from your Costco Hearing Aid Center staff. We can solve most minor problems and prevent more serious ones.

Expect to hear things you may not have heard for a while. This may include both pleasant things, like birds singing and bells ringing, and unexpected things, like yourself chewing, or your clothes moving.

Expect your own voice to sound different at first. After all, you are hearing your voice through a microphone. To help you adjust, read out loud from a newspaper or a book several times a day.

Expect everyday sounds to be louder than you remember them. Chances are you haven’t been hearing a lot of things at their normal volume for quite some time.

Expect certain listening environments to be easier than others. Listening to one person in your living room will naturally be easier than listening to a group in a noisy restaurant. Be sure to face the person you are conversing with and gradually work up to group settings.

What to Expect Next

What to Expect Next (Continued)

Expect sound to become more natural in three to four weeks. That’s about how long it takes for your brain and ears to acclimate to processing all the sound they’ve been missing.

Expect artificial sound to be more challenging than live conversation. This refers to sound from a TV, stereo or public address system (e.g., at church or other gatherings). This type of hearing requires practice as well.

TIP: If your hearing aids have a manual volume control and you are having difficulty deciding where to set them, try asking someone to set the television to a normal volume and adjust your hearing aids to the sound of the TV.

Expect your hearing aids to make things better, but not perfect. Even the best circuitry and programming cannot duplicate a normal-hearing ear. Fortunately, hearing aids make the most of your hearing, and can help tremendously!

Expect there to be things that are difficult or uncomfortable to hear while you are adjusting to your hearing aids, such as dishes rattling, or chip bags crinkling.

Include the hearing aid user whenever you can. Encourage new hearing aid users to participate in activities they loved prior to their hearing loss. It is not uncommon for people to socially isolate themselves as a result of their hearing loss. Family and friends can help a great deal drawing them back into a more social lifestyle.

TIP: Keep your hands and other things from obstructing your mouth when

you speak.

Tips for Family and Caregivers

Be patient and remember that hearing loss can be frustrating. It is hard on the hearing aid user and the family. The transition to better hearing is much easier if everyone is helpful and supportive throughout the process. Keep in mind that hearing aids don’t provide perfect hearing and that a hearing impaired person does not process sound as quickly as someone with normal hearing. Be in the same room when you are talking to the person and face them throughout the conversation.

TIP: Speak clearly and distinctly. Don’t mumble.

Remember, in situations when direct eye contact isn’t possible, like driving in a car, that someone in the backseat will not hear the people in the front with much clarity. If you are not driving, slightly turn to face the person in the backseat before speaking. Make sure you have their attention. When a hearing aid user is aware you are about to speak, their level of understanding goes up. If this is a common challenge, talk to a specialist about additional program options or compatible accessories.

Tips for Family and Caregivers (Continued)

TIP: Speak face to face whenever

possible.

Noisy environments will be the most difficult for the hearing aid user. Loud restaurants and large meeting areas with high levels of background noise will be the most challenging. Be sure that they are using their proper program for noise reduction by giving them a gentle reminder. Be aware of other noise in the room (running water, TV, etc.) that you may be competing with.
