Dear Friends,

And so we move from Lent into the joyful and hectic time of Easter (much

earlier this year - didn’t we just have Christmas?) With the busyness of

school holidays, chocolate eggs and family gatherings, it can be easy to

forget about Jesus. He is, to coin a popular Christmas phrase, “The Reason

for the Season”.

Easter is a time when Christians around the world celebrate the joy of

Christ Jesus rising from the dead, victorious over sin and the devil. It is a

time also when we begin to see the beauty of Springtime, in this world of

God’s creation.

There are many theories and much speculation about the origins of Easter,

and why it is celebrated at this time of year. For example, did you know

that Easter can occur on any date between March 23rd and April 26th, and

is closely related to the timing of the Spring Equinox? Or that the earliest

known observance of Easter (known then as “Pasch”) occurred between the

second and fourth centuries? These celebrations commemorated both

Jesus’ death and his resurrection at once, whereas these two events have

been split up between Good Friday and Easter Sunday today.

It would seem that Easter as we know it today has become a bizarre ‘mash-

up’ of Christian and non-Christian ideas, which although sometimes at odds

in many ways, manage to marry together to bring a message of new life and

fruitfulness

So, as you maybe celebrate with friends and family, or make pretty

bonnets for the children, or hide chocolate eggs around the house and

garden, or attend church on Easter Day, my prayer is that God shows you

the beauty of His creation in a way that you have not noticed it before.

Christ is Risen! He is Risen indeed, Hallelujah!

Love, prayer and blessings,

Aron

Have you seen the New Church website?

Pub Quiz

Many of you may not be aware that we – the Parish Church – have been put-

ting up a team (and sometimes more than one) in a local pub. On Tuesday

evenings we gather in the Queens Arms at about 8.45 for a splendid convivial

evening, and during which Linda (the landlady) asks us 30 questions. I think

there are usually about six or seven teams taking part all together.

A sample of the questions we get are:

Who was the housekeeper in “Father Ted”?

How many Oscars did Alfred Hitchcock get?

Under which Prime Minister was British Rail privatised?

For which James Bond film was the theme song sung by Matt Monro?

Which is the only MONOPOLY property situated south of the Thames?

Answers to be found later on!

If there are up to about five of us we make up one team – usually calling

ourselves “Last Rights”; if more of us turn up it would be two teams, or even

more if there are enough of us. We very rarely win, but on one recent

occasion, when we had two teams, one won and the other came second! The

prizes are modest and comprise a voucher for up to about £12 worth of free

drinks the following week.

How about joining us? Just turn up if you fancy it – it’s just a bit of fun

Rick

At the end of last year Bakewell church website underwent a facelift and as

well as looking brighter and more up to date is now much more easy to manage

and change. Please have a look, spread the word and if you have any ideas for

further improvements or if you wish to add content about something

you are involved in please send me your suggestion ideally with a

paragraph or two about it and a photo or two. We also now have

the facility to use the homepage to put up news items so please

send those to me as well. My email address

is [email protected].

Thanks, Tanya.

A friend of mine used to help an undertaker when required. One

frosty morning a lady coming out of the crematorium slipped on the

ice. An onlooker remarked “You’d think they would sprinkle a few

ashes around here wouldn’t you?”

Receipts this month have been a mere £123 following the Christmas rush. However, the Spring catalogue is now with us with a number of interesting new products. These include White Chocolate Raspberry Ripple Rice Crispy Bars, Cakes and Flapjack, and an even wider range of Divine chocolate. Geobars have had a facelift, not only in appear-ance but also in content, being now less sweet and more fruity. Good to hear is that price increases have been kept to the absolute minimum with even some reductions.

Not yet in the catalogue but a world first for Traidcraft, is fairtrade rice from Myanmar - that country's first ever Fairtrade product. Believe it or not, in the 1990's Burma was the world's largest exporter of rice, but the dictatorship and the international sanctions put a stop to all that. Now, though, as the country transforms itself, exports are picking up and Traidcraft is working in two remote rural communities, supporting the modernisation of a rice mill and providing storage facilities. Watch this space.

Easter will be upon us at the end of this month, so it is time to stock up with the Real Easter Eggs. I have the standard best seller in stock, and will be pleased to order from the wide range illustrated in the new cata-logue.

Bird’s Eye View for March 2016

Michael Hillam, our protection of vulnerable persons co-ordinator, was invited to the PCC in January to answer any questions we had regarding his draft safeguarding policy for children and vulnerable adults. He swore that he had enjoyed spending hours trawling through all the documents on the subject in the public domain. His skill is in cutting through the pious hopes and vague philosophy of many documents, and condensing the practical guidelines to a readable two sides. This will go up on our church website. I do hope that other churches in the diocese will access this, to give them a good start in forming their own policies.

The PCC agreed that work is needed to keep our magnificent organ in good repair, so instructed our organist, Glyn Davies, to look into securing grants for what could be about £21,000. No commitment can be given until the current expenditure on the roof is established.

Rev. Aron has undertaken to show interested people how to set up the new screen and possibly how to use the new camcorder. Our application to invest £3,00 in the Credit Union is in hand. Dot, Brenda and Ben were thanked for the inspiring Tree Festival. Their report was in February PP.

And last but not least, as this is a bird's eye view, the PCC gave its approval to erect some nest boxes to attract swifts to nest in the bell-tower and to keep the process under review. It perhaps helped that the church will not be asked to pay for this. As chance (or a higher power) would have it, Tanya Hoare, who attracted swifts to her house in Cumbria, is talking about this at the meeting of the Bird Study Group (who have agreed to fund our project) on Monday 14th March at 7.30pm at the Friends Meeting House, so do come along and find out more.

Christmas Tree Festival 2016 This is a VERY early plea for extra help in organising the

next tree festival. As well as the usual stewarding, baking

and helping in Open Door, we should be really grateful for a

group of people to take on some of the following tasks:-

delivery of invitations to take part in the festival to local

businesses

writing advertising pieces for local publications

taking delivery of the trees and placing them in church

assisting exhibitors when they are setting up

the big clean up!

We shall need to start publishing the event in the summer, hence

the early plea for help and it will be necessary for invitations to be

delivered very early in October.

Please give serious thought as to whether you would be able and

prepared to help in this very worthwhile outreach. If so, please

contact either Dot- 814496 / [email protected] or

Ben- 812438 /[email protected]

Your involvement would be greatly appreciated.

* * * Lunch Club

Our Lunch Club members have really missed being able to gather to-

gether during the last two months as they look forward to getting

and to sharing a meal. We will be meeting again on March 29th -

Easter Tuesday and then on the last Tuesday of every month. Our

success in offering hospitality has depended on people offering

lifts, cooking part of the meal or helping to serve out food but we

really need more helpers. The prospect of catering for about 20

people may seem daunting but offers of providing a casserole or a

pudding for 6-8 would also be welcome and all costs are reimbursed.

If you can help either regularly or occasionally please contact Brenda

Jackson. 01629 813143.

Rick Naylor has been presented with a trophy and

certificate as the best photographer in the U3Afoto

group that meets in the choir vestry on the first Friday

of the month.

He won with pictures taken last year and a recent chal-

lenge to take a portrait that showed something of the

character of the person.

The photographs will continue to be shown in the Newark

There are many of church people, including the vicar, his wife Rachel, Deb-

bie, Leraya, John Wickham and church cleaner Mary.

Do have a look and leave a comment on the forms provided

Mothers' Union Notes for March 2016 Alyse provided for all of us a wonderful experience of calm, quiet and creativity as she led our afternoon February meeting 'Fast Forward to Lent'.

Our next meeting: Tuesday 1st Mar 7.30pm. The Vestry. 'An Attitude to Gratitude'. Inspiring stories by our speaker Ruth Adams. The Bible tells us to 'give thanks in everything' but it's not always easy! Come and hear some really inspirational stories and find creative ways of making this 'attitude to gratitude' part of our everyday life.

Ruth is a wife, mum, trainer and coach and loves to help inspire people to see the possibilities. She runs a business and social enterprise, has five chil-dren and enjoys travelling, reading, cycling and has just joined the new Bakewell community choir. She runs the S Yorkshire Adoption UK group.

Everyone is welcome.
