From the Desk of The President
Thane SPCA enters the 11th year of its unstinted service towards animals.
Indeed a happy occasion for us. This Annual Report is for the same year 2012-
2013. I place on record on behalf of my fellow Board members, our sincere
gratitude to all animal activists, our members, donors, corporates, volunteers
and the general public, for their wholehearted help and cooperation in our
animal welfare activities and funding for specific programmes.
The animal welfare movement is gaining ground and spreading all over Thane.
It is catching on even in remote corners of the district bringing animals succor
as never before.
Rules and regulations, which have a notorious reputation of being in place and
on paper only, are being implemented more and more in police stations and
with authorities and local bodies.
Thane SPCA in its own way is doing its bit for animals by running its hospice,
ambulatory services and fighting cruelty cases on behalf of Thaneites, humane
education programmes and through its rural welfare programmes to draft
animals by means of animal health camps in remote interior villages .
Thane SPCA has need for more youthful manpower and volunteer force and its
committed members to take animal welfare to greater heights in our district.
Before closing, I would like to mention that our success was a group effort,
each link strengthened by the two other on either side. On one hand, I on
behalf of my Managing Committee thank our supporters who have stood by us
like a pillar through the years, on the other hand our appreciation to our team
of Staff who kept a straight face through all the agony that goes with actually
the mending of broken bones and wiping of silent tears !
Thank you all !
The Thane SPCA is often telephoned by distressed members of the public requesting them to clear stray dogs and feral cats from their vicinity. The callers are tired of the mess, disturbance or inconvenience that they feel the animals are creating and expect us to attend the problem.
We would like to help. However, the role of TSPCA is to care for abused, injured and sick-animals. We have over 6000 animals yearly to deal with which includes veterinary treatment, quarantine, vaccination, sterilization, re-homing via our adoption service and rare euthanasia.
The TSPCA will collect any animal which is hurt, or rescue any animal in distress, but we lack the additional resources or space to clear animals away for members of the public who are being inconvenienced.
The SPCA would like to advise members of the public that if they are disturbed by animals ,they could do any of the following:
Discuss the problem with the kind folk who are feeding the strays and arrive at an amicable solution for both parties.
Contact TSPCA at 09322271966 or 09321212344 during office hours to arrange for sterilization. Once
sterilized, the animals will make less noise and will be less excitable, thus causing less disturbance.
Try to find the dogs /cats a good home where it will be safe and cared for.
Ensure that all rubbish is thrown away in the proper manner so that strays will not be enticed to rummage through it for food, thus not coming near the offended party. TSPCA gives advice by telephone and is happy to counsel anyone as to how to live in harmony with the animals around them. Telephone us at 9322271966 any time between 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday or on 9321212344 between 6PM and 9 PM for any consultation.
OUR REQUEST TO ANIMAL LOVERS:- Please be a responsible animal guardian. Sterilise and vaccinate your local strays. Feed them early morning or late night to avoid
causing disturbances to passers by. Do not throw chicken claws, chicken heads,
mutton paya or whole fish on the streets for feeding the animals.
Use plastic bowls whenever possible, to feed your strays.
Listen to the complaints of local people, then explain to them about animal welfare.
TRY OUT ALL THESE AND SEE YOUR ANIMAL UNFRIENDLY
NEIGHBOURHOOD TURN INTO A FRIENDLY ONE.
- Debashish Majumdar ( Executive Secretary )

IMPACT REPORT
THE YEAR AT A GLANCE
Construction and Maintenance Report
The entire Office and Meeting room that was made of bamboo had crumbled by the end of May 2012. So much so that rats had infested all medicines and paperwork that were being maintained in the premises. On a war footing Rs.6,50,000/- was earmarked and raised from 5 different sources. The structure was made permanent with brick and mortar and all walls were tiled for permanency. All tiles were donated by Muni Subrat Foundation. Along with this, the other major repairs were the
Sick bay which got new tiled walls, new cages for wild birds and monkeys, a new drainage, electrical connection for a wall fan and lights for our staff
Cattle shed which got new tiles, tiled drainage and a gate
Circular drainage all around the hospital
A small aviary for non predator birds
Tiling and new flooring of Predator birds enclosure
New cages, concealed drainage and tiling in cat ward Legal & HR Report
There was an ardent request from our staff to give them permanency to their jobs with us, we decided during this AGM to comply with their request. We have now issued them proper appointment letters with salary slips and yearly bonus etc. This has given them security and has definitely raised the quality of their work. This also meant hiking their salaries as per the labour laws which meant a lumpsum rise in the total salary. This was possible only because of the strong backing of our core donors. SDK Associates, Bhandup, has been employed as our Labour Consultant agency. Till now they are very kindly doing Pro Bono work with us despite our requests to generate annual bills for us. As of now, we have 2 Veterinary Surgeons, 1 Hospital Manager, 5 Veterinary Technicians, 1 Hospital Supervisor, 2 Ambulance Drivers, 5 Hospital Support Staff, 1 Accountant and 2 Security Guards.
Internal Audit Sudhir Amembal & Associates, running Animal Advocacy in the USA, give their pro bono consultation to Animal Organisations all over the world through Internal Audit system. Sudhir, who has been closely following us since last one and half years, advised us to take an internal audit to locate our strengths and weaknesses. After detailed processes, he submitted a report on the Development of Thane SPCA. This was as follows : TSPCA needs to broaden its database of donors. This should be done through referrals, procuring a “donations manager “ software, “in Person solicitation from regular donors, Ongoing appeals, seeking annual pledges, Annual capital campaigns, Bequests and Life Funding, Trustee Referrals, Indian and Overseas grants, events and tight pursuance with foreign funds. The agency has rated Thane SPCA administration as “ Excellent “, but they have suggested that we find newer blood to be infused to avoid burn out.
Overview
Compared to the previous years, Thane SPCA has been able to participate in many more animal welfare activities during the last 2 years which has helped animals en masse. One of the main – and successful – activities during this period was our participation as the Programme Director of the Federation through which we were part of 3 very intense animal welfare programmes – Opposing the Mega Dairy at Nellore, Animal Experimentation and Farm Animals Welfare Programme. We were also a part of the Committee which organised the India for Animals Conference 2012 at Goa.
**********************************************************************
Thane SPCA became a part of the Plastic Cow by starting the Mumbai Thane Chapter of this national Project. Our work is to take this project to mainly the milk consuming community, doctors and the Animal Husbandry Department. We have no dedicated funds or personnel for this project. ********************************************************************** We partnered with the Humane Society International for a Be Cruelty Free Project. In this we took our message through 2 short videos to mainly college students and the young working people to teach about laboratory experimentation and make kinder choices while shopping for Cosmetics and household detergents. Thane SPCA has also started a project called The Go vegetarian Outreach in partnership with Humane Society International. This is mainly targeted at the meat eating communities and through a 2 minute video and a half hour presentation we ask the audience to make a healthy and compassionate choice in food. We have now a full time Campaign Manager for this project. **********************************************************************
Thane SPCA was the main steam behind the
Captive Wildlife Project which we initiated through the Federation. All initial
paperwork through letters and RTI were done throughout the country to gather
evidences of Dolphinariums that were to be set up. Armed with this information, the
Ministry of Env and Forests successfully issued a ban on using of dolphins in any
Marine park.
********************************************************************
One of our key achievements was to render such
excellent medical care that more and more animals are being brought in by other
organisations. from World for All & Save our Strays Andheri, PAWS Dombivili, ,
Mangal Vardhini & Vardhaman Sanskardham, Ghatkopar and Divya Jyot, Nalasopara.
As well as the Forest department and Police stations from Crawford market, Versova
and Kurla.
*******************************************************************
However we have not been successful in
retaining volunteers that remains a bane this year also.
********************************************************************
Apart from merchandising as the sole motive,
we have partnered with TAPAS who
assisted us in introducing Leather Free Wallets this year. This has enabled us to bring
to light the pathetic condition of source of leather and abuse of animals in leather
industry, apart from generating a small revenue.
*********************************************************************
One of our gigantic successes was the rescue of the female elephant Laxmi from the
owners and transporting her to the Wildlife SOS Sanctuary at Mathura.
This actually needed 2 years of preparation and 4 months of detailed planning to
execute since there was a lot of political involvement. We are now working on
rescuing the 2 remaining elephants, however this will take time and detailed
planning.
********************************************************************
We have appealed with full steam to the Collector for a land for our Animal Hospital.
This has meant endless visits to different government offices and submitting various
sets of documents.
********************************************************************* Finally, within the quarter, the new website and newsletter was developed to a great
extent.
********************************************************************* We were listed on Guidestar India, Help Your NGO, Samarthan International – portals
that enables donors to connect with organisations. We have applied for
accreditation with other portals like Credibility Alliance and Charities Aid Foundation.
********************************************************************** Our President Shakuntala Majumdar was elected as a member to the State Animal
Welfare Board and re-elected to the District PCA Committee to plan and oversee “en
masse “animal welfare policies in the state of Maharashtra.
Development
A major Focus was on fundraising for this year. For this we arranged a Charity Night
at Ravindra Natya Mandir on 21st September 2013. About Rs.3,00,000/- was raised
from this show. This amount will be used partially for critical care surgeries and
partially to invest in our Corpus.

PLEASE NOTE
NO REMUNERATION OR HONORARIUM IS PAID TO ANY TRUSTEE, EXECUTIVE

"Every act of irreverence for life, every act which
neglects life, which is indifferent to and wastes
life, is a step towards the love of death. This
choice man must make at every minute. Never
were the consequences of the wrong choice as
total and as irreversible as they are today.
Never was the warning of the Bible so urgent: "I
have put before you life and death, blessing and
curse. Choose life, that you and your children
may live." (Deuteronomy 30:19)
