APRIL 2014 3 FOCUS ON POWDER COATINGS recorded by the speciality chemical products segment whose sales fell by 11% to 4.95 bn reflecting a decline in demand and asset sales (particularly the sale of Chemicals Pakistan in 2012). AkzoNobel’s decorative paints business posted a 3% decline in sales to 4.17 bn. Turnover from performance coatings fell by 2% to 5.57 bn. According to the group’s president Ton Buechner, AkzoNobel was hit by poor market conditions and difficulties on the speciality chemical products market in 1H 2013. However in 2H 2013 it saw the first signs of stability on several markets. In addition to its own restructuring measures, this positive effect allowed the group to improve its profitability in 3Q and 4Q despite exchange rate fluctuations. AkzoNobel warns that the economic climate remains fragile and that foreign currency markets are still volatile. It will therefore pursue significant restructuring plans in order to cut costs still further. It expects this restructuring to result in charges of at least 250 M in 2014.
