Actions affect life and positive Karma is the moral force that orders the universe, it’s the power that keeps the world in motion and keeps society ticking. The entire universe conspires to give the best only to those who dream and work, and strive passionately. As they say, it’s better to con-quer yourself than to win a thousand battles. If work is life, let’s all commit towards it and celebrate progress in unison, RGU-Karmotsav, “Karma He Pradhan Hain”!

It has been a privilege for The Assam Royal Global University (RGU), Guwahati, to have been entrusted, in just its third year of existence, the opportunity to host the 35th Inter University East Zone Youth Festival (UNIFEST) 2019-20. A unique fest of this kind, it served as a platform showcasing the rich cultural legacies of the East Zone and reinforced mutual love and togetherness among the youth. It refreshed the minds of the youngsters involved in the fest in different capacities, and provided every opportunity to the performers to prove their mettle in various co-curricular activities.

We are thankful to Association of Indian Universities (AIU) for giving this huge opportunity to RGU and for extending continuous support in all aspects of organizing the fest.

We would also like to thank Prof. (Dr) K.P.S. Shante, Observer appointed by AIU for the East Zone UNIFEST 2019-20, who has not only been very cooperative but has also taken the effort of being with us during the five-day UNIFEST held from 11th - 15th November 2019, at The Assam Royal Global University.

Our heartfelt gratitude is also extended to the Patron, Prof. (Dr.) S.P. Singh, Vice Chancellor, RGU, for his able guidance and leadership throughout the planning and execution of the fest. The 35th Inter University East Zone Youth Festival (UNIFEST) 2019-20, held from 11th to 15th Nov 2019, at The Assam Royal Global University, under the aegis of Association of Indian Universities, has been able to attract participants from 23 universities of the Eastern Region. The sole purpose of such an initiative is to bring the leaders of tomorrow closer to each other so that they can join hands in the future to carry the nation forward.

Though competitions were conducted for different categories, namely Music, Dance, Literary Events, Theatre and Fine Arts, the primary aim was not merely to compete against each other and win; but to propagate the concept of regional integration, to spread the spirit of communal harmony and brotherhood, and to encourage the youth to exhibit their cultural prowess in this common platform.

On a lighter note, the Mimicry was all about entertainment, fun and laughter. Even though mimicing is a tough job, KARMOTSAV saw many enthusiastic participants from various universities.

A Blood Donation Camp was arranged by the Royal School of Nursing (The Assam Royal Global University) in association with GMCH (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital) on the 4th day of the UNIFEST 2019-20. About a hundred persons, who offered to donate blood, were required to fill up forms to submit their names, blood groups, physical fitness and other particulars necessary for donating blood. The donation started at 10:00 am and continued up to 2:00 pm. Prof. (Dr.) K.P.S. Shante, Observer, AIU, also participated in the noble cause and was a source of inspiration for those lined up to donate. It was the 128th time that Prof. (Dr.) K. P. S. Shante donated blood. The donors were served with refreshment.

While the overall activity of the blood dona-tion camp was monitored by National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), the transpor-tation of the blood bank was taken care of by National Blood Transfusion Council.

‘Nazm - E –Mehfil’, a non-competitive and special programme, was organised in the evening of the fourth day that was actively participated by some of the judges who had rendered their daunting and decisive services during the competitive events of the festival. This was the first ever event of its kind to be conducted in any UNIFEST. The event brought to light vibrant scenes of the persons who performed, for a change, on the other side of the table.

Following this, a bonfire was arranged in front of Block ‘D’ of the University campus. Competitions being over, the students were relieved of tension and responded all-out for fun and game. Keeping aside their differ-ences and competitiveness, the participants held hands to sing and dance around the bonfire, – a symbolic end which bred new relations and friendships to be cherished for

life. The ‘fire’ filled the air with excitement and the flames danced and flickered, knowing that they were being watched by an amazed crowd. All those present were in high spirits. The faculty and staff were not to lag behind the students. In fact, some of them excelled the younger ones in merry-making.

A special dinner was arranged after the bonfire. The team manager of Banaras Hindu University commended the host university (RGU) for its efforts and hospitality. He said, “The entire team (RGU) worked effortlessly and was always smiling. The warm welcome we received will always remain close to our hearts. Even at 4 o’clock in the morning, volunteers were waiting for us at the railway station.”

Ms. Angira Mimani, Registrar, RGU and Cul-tural Coordinator, KARMOTSAV, extended token of appreciation to Prof. (Dr.) K.P.S. Shante, who functioned as an involved, watchful and very suggestive Observer from AIU. In return, Prof. Shante expressed profound and sincere feelings of elation, and congratulated everybody associated with the festival. He further said that RGU had set new standards in professionalism and management though it is only in its third year of journey. He stated, “Though a new university, the level of attitude, communica-tion, perception, rationality, problem solving techniques and carrying out work smartly, are absolutely unbelievable. I attended the second UNIFEST in 1989 in Udaipur which stood out and it had a degree of profession-alism. If at all any university comes near to it or beats it, I would say it is The Assam Royal Global University.” He also shared with the participants an ideology of ‘staying humble and yet intellectually elevated’ that Guru Nanak Dev Ji followed.

Appreciating the participating universities

in donating blood, Prof. Shante quoted that it was the 128th time he donated blood. He wished Blood Donation Camps to be held during every youth festival. Further, Prof. Shante advised the participants to discover one’s own approach to things while respect-ing others’ opinions.

Being an inter-university festival, the contingent incharges and students from participating universities were invited to the stage to share their memories and experi-ences over the five-day KARMOTSAV. This offered everyone an opportunity to walk down the memory lane of the last five days. The contingent incharge of Ranchi Univer-sity quoted, “Abhi toh zindagi ki asli udaan baaki hain, abhi toh zindagi ke kaii imte-haan baaki hain, abhi toh naapi hain muthhi bhar zameen, abhi toh saara asmaan baaki hain.” Ananth Kakati, contingent incharge of Gauhati University, stressed upon the fact that national integration is the main objec-tive of youth festivals. Abhinandan Kumar, student participant from Banaras Hindu University, while addressing the gathering, wished the participants all success in future.

This was followed by a violin recital present-ed by Prashant Mishra from Banaras Hindu University. Prof. (Dr.) Pradip Jyoti Mahanta, i/c Dean, Royal School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Senior Professor, Department of English, Royal School of Lan-guages, then spoke on the team effort of the orgnanizers and its positive ending note on the festival. Thereafter, students of RGU, while performing a Bihu dance, welcomed the Patron, Prof. (Dr) S.P. Singh, to the stage by embracing him in their performance.

Prof. (Dr.) S.P. Singh, Hon’ble Vice Chan-cellor, RGU and Patron, KARMOTSAV, then delivered a speech that was both powerful and inspiring. He began by stating how

national integration could be considered the soul of KARMOTSAV and that the festi-val, through its quality performances, stood testimony to this fact. He thanked all those who contributed to the fest and opined that it was important to win hearts, not just trophies. He quoted a couplet in Hindi, “Aye umar, maana ki tu badi hasti hain, jab chahe mera bachpan chheen sakti hain, par guroor mat kar apni hasti par, mujhe bhi naaz hain apni masti par, hain agar damm toh itni si kar khata, bachpan toh chheen lia, bachpana chheen ke dikha,” emphasizing the need of having a child-like curiosity about everything. He concluded by thank-ing the organising team and wishing good luck to the participating universities. This was followed by a mesmerising Manipuri dance performance by Mr. Pebam Ching Shanglakpa Singh and Ms. Ningthoujam of Manipur University.

In order to give away the prizes to the win-ning teams and participants, dignitaries Shri. A.K. Pansari (Hon’ble Chancellor, RGU), Shri A.K. Modi (Hon’ble Pro-Chancellor, RGU), Prof. (Dr.) S.P. Singh (Hon’ble Vice Chancel-lor, RGU), Prof. (Dr.) K.P.S. Shante (Observer, AIU), Ms. Angira Mimani (Registrar, RGU and Cultural Coordinator, KARMOTSAV), and Prof. Alok Kumar Buragohain (Chair-person, Academics, RGU), were called upon the stage.

Few changes were made for declaration of results which were incorporated on sugges-tions of Prof. (Dr.) K.P.S. Shante, Observer, AIU, consented by all contingent incharges during the Managers’ Meet. Five (5) teams were awarded prizes when the number of participating universities in any event was more than ten (10). If the participating universities were between 6-10, four (4) teams were awarded prizes. However, if the number was five (5) or less, only top three (3) teams were given prizes.

Teams securing the top three (3) positions were awarded trophies and the winners of the group events were awarded gold med-als. The 4th and 5th place holders were hand-ed out merit certificates. All the participants were awarded participatory certificates and participatory medals. Only the top three (3) universities in each event are qualified to participate in Nationals.

To wind up the ceremony, vote of thanks was delivered, extending gratitude to Association of Indian Universities, Prof. (Dr.) K.P.S. Shante, the participating universities, contingent incharges, committee members, coordinators, volunteers and House Keeping staff.

The Assam Royal Global University is grate-ful to the Association of Universities for entrusting it with the honour of organizing the 35th Inter University East Zone Youth Festival 2019-20, christened as ‘KARMOT-SAV,’ focusing the importance of hard work and dedication with the tagline, “Karma Hi Pradhan Hain.”
