The Chinese Optical Society held the Optical Forum of the International Year of
Light on January 11th in University of Science and Technology of China. Invited by the
SPIE Student Chapter of USTC, Chen Zhang and Fangyan Zhou, our student members,
attended this Forum. Ten plenaries are given by six members of Chinese Academy of
Engineering and four bureaus of the optics institute from Shanghai, Xi’an and Chengdu.
After the plenary, all the students from the student chapter of SPIE and OSA in China
attended the Chapter poster exhibition and had a short communication and discussion.
2. Orientation Meeting
SPIE Student Chapter of Sichuan University held an orientation and welcome
seminar to the new student members on April 2nd. The president Chen Zhang gave an
introduction about our chapter, which contains the constitution of our chapter, the
rights and obligations of student members and the regular activities. Then an
acknowledgement is held to the previous officers Zheqiang Zhong, Lu Chen and Xing
Yu. At last, Fangyan Zhou gave a report to all the student members about attending the
Optical Forum in the early of this year. The orientation meeting really did positive effect
and informed each new member how to participate in the chapter.
3. Academic Communication and Discussion
SPIE Student Chapter of Sichuan University and Graduate Student Union of School
of Optoelectronic Information of University of Electronic Science and Technology of
China held an academic communication and discussion together. On April 17th, Hanyu
Wang, a PhD student from UESTC, gave an oral presentation about Organic
Photovoltaic and Electroluminescent Integrated Device at SCU. On April 23th, Chao
Liu, a PhD student from SCU, gave an oral presentation about Variable Focus Liquid
Lenses and Their Applications. After each presentation, we had a heated discussion
with the speaker. All students who attended this activity said they not only have learned
some new knowledge but also expanded their mind. This kind of activity is very useful
for students’ learning.
4. Basketball Competition
As a fixture activity, the 5th Basketball Competition was continued nearly one month
from late April to late May, which was sponsored by the SPIE and OSA Student Chapter
of Sichuan University. The game have heightened the cognition of exercise, the interest
in sports, the mutual exchange, harmonic ability and working in a group as well. It also
did good to cultivate excellent virtue.
5. SPIE Optics & Photonics 2015
SPIE Optics and Photonics 2015, the largest interdisciplinary technical conference
in North America focused on research and technologies in solar, optics, photonics, and
space optics. From August 8th to 13th in San Diego, Chen Zhang, Xiaoyang Guo and
Qinglong Meng, our student members, went abroad to attend this conference. They
participated the Leadership Workshop on the first day. Xiaoyang Guo and Qinglong
Meng submitted papers and gave oral presentations on 9th and 11th respectively. Chen
Zhang, as the president of our chapter, attended the chapter poster exhibition on 12th.
During the conference, they not only learnt a lot of knowledge, but also met number of
interesting persons.
6. Volunteers Activity
The Academic Conference of Chinese Optical Society was held in Chengdu from
August 14th to 17th by the Chinese Optical Society. As a SPIE Student Chapter, our
student members were responsible for part of the volunteer work. There were 20
students participated this activity. They did a lot of works, such as venue decoration,
equipment debugging, maintenance of conference order. They are very happy to have
this chance to be volunteers. The experience is a special one in their lives.
7. Member Sharing Session
On November 26th, Chen Zhang, Xiaoyang Guo and Qinglong Meng gave three oral
reports concerning their papers and experience in SPIE Optics and Photonics 2015 in
San Diego. Furthermore, they shared the stuff during the conferences, which impressed
the members and fueled the curiosity of members to get deep into the science research.
8. Communication Activity
On December 5th, SPIE Student Chapter of Sichuan University, University of
Electronic Science and Technology of China and Chengdu University of Technology
hosted a communication activity in SCU. First, each of the three Chapter president gave
a brief report about the general situation of each Chapter. After that, all the student
members talked together to know each other. We discussed the activities we have ever
held, the way of management we used and the cooperation among us in the future.

do some physical exercise and practice our team work. We had a lot of fun during the
activity. It is help us to know each other deeply.
9. Invited Lecture of International Year of Light
As an activity of International Year of Light, Prof. Eric Mazur, coming from Harvard
University, gave us an invited lecture named “Less is more: Extreme Optics with Zero
Refractive Index”. Prof. Eric Mazur introduced their latest scientific research in an
understandable way. He interacted with teachers and students during the whole
presentation. We learned a lot of knowledges and found some interesting things at the
same time. Everyone said it is a rare opportunity to learn from such a famous professor
in our research field.
Planned Activities in the future
