THE OVD ROUND2

SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP

Often referred to as the Holy Grail of Scottish Footbal l, the Scottish Junior Cup is one of the world's oldest football competitions, first played for in 1886/87. Not even Andy Phin can remember that far back but one thing's for certain, a lot has changed in the beautiful game since then. Nobody who attended the first final at Argyle Park in Govan in 1887 watching Fairfield defeat Edinburgh Woodburn by 3-1 could have imagined the incredible joy and despair this magnificent competition has brought to millions of Scots during the intervening 118 years. We , at Tayport , are just fortunate to have sampled, more than most , the roller coaster emotions that accompany the fine old trophy . Throughout the years certain clubs have dominated the history of the competition and it's fair to say that, in the modem era , Tayport FC has been that club . Statistics will show that we have been the most successful club in the competition over the past dozen years or so . It 's been a hard reputation to live up to , and as we move into a new era, living up to that reputation is the challenge for the new management team of Burgess , Williamson and Carr. There will be a buzz from Burghead to Dalmellington around 2pm this afternoon as the 128 clubs kick off round 2 , Looking at today's card we 've picked five certs , five potential shocks and five matches, the atmosphere at which should typify Scottish Cup day

TIDAY"SGAM OVD SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP ROUND 2

TAYPORT v FORMARTINE UNITED This will be the fifth meeting of today's teams, the third on The Canniepairt. The clubs first locked horns in March 1997 when a crowd of 298 saw Tayport win 5-0 in the quarter final of the Tayside/North Cup. The Formartine committee may recall the match but none of today's United survive from that day. Tayport, though, can still call upon Paterson, Ramsay, Stewart and Dave Reilly. That's history, however, and we are now concentrating on the present. With Formartine putting in a strong challenge for the North Super League title, the Aberdeenshire side are clearly a side with which to be reckoned. Experienced long-serving manager Dave Cormie knows the game and he will have Tayport's strengths and weaknesses well sussed out It's a new look Formartine side with, several quality youngsters in the squad and only Chris Allsop, Niall Corser and Jim Findlay surviving from the last visit here in 2001. The visitors got off to a slow start to this season, failing to reach the knock-out stages of the League Cup, but that's behind them and the league form has been good. The Soccer World North Super League team has been playing well as a unit ;ind their form against the top sides in .their league, in particular , has been impressive according to reports, and two weeks ago they went briefl y to the top of the table In particularly good form has been striker Keith Reid , who is top score r with 13 goals to his credit and the Tayport defence will have to be on their mettle to subdue what is currently the North Region 's most potent attacking team. With only four goals in their last five games, there are no prizes for guessing where Tayport's problems lie, but hopefully the good build-up play and chances can be converted into goals. Keith Burgess had a good look at his squad in a midweek fri endly in which there was a surprise return for Ralph Hunter. The big No 9 played the entire 90 mins and grabbed a goal into the bargain , in the 2-0 win at Montrose RoseIea. The Tayport manager ' s selection could well be influenc ed by performances in that game in which Bruce, Malone, Reilly and Livie also had the full 90 mins. It's something of a unique occasion for manager Burgess and assistant Stewart Williamson, taking part in the OVD Cup for a second time this season. His previous charges, Glenrothes, were eliminated by Sauchie in a first round replay . Does that mean they ' re cup-tied?!

With the OVD Scottish Junior Cup dominating the card , there is only one Whyte & Mackay Super League game scheduled for today - Thornton v Bonnyrigg. For three clubs , Tayport , Lochee United and Bathgate, last Saturday's fixtures signalled the halfway point of the league season. Tayport currently s it in 4th place, obviously disappointed at the number of points which have slipped from their grasp during these first eleven games.

Looking at the positive , however , of the three clubs above TayporL i.e. Lochee , Bathgate and Linlithgow , we have beaten two and drawn with Rose. The title challenge has been slipping by the week , but, although it 's bound to be a remot e possibility in a division of only 22 games , it is sti ll a possibility . After all, football' s a funny game .

However , looking at the negative, in terms of the maximum points which we can achieve , every team in the division can better our maximum points total. Thi s time last season we were three points better off but had played a game more .

Yet again this season, the competitive nature of the East Super League is very evident. The relegation of three clubs means that most clubs will be looking over their shoulder and every result on a Saturday is anxiously awaited.

THE REFEREE'S A SUPER STAR

It's not often we have a match official who comes into that category. But in the world of Scottish Cricket that's how this afternoon ' s referee , GEORGE SALMOND , might be described. A batsman and a pretty mean fielder , Mr Salmond captai ned his country in the 1999 World Cricket Cup and indeed has over I 00 caps for Scotland. Now a teacher in Edinburgh , George formerly stayed in Arbroath and this is not his first visit to the Canniepairt , having played here for Arbroath SC. He ' s on the 'fast track' refereeing scheme and is tipped to go to the very top. Also rapidly making a name for himself on the after dinner speaking circuit. The photo of George (right) is taken from Mann ' s Guide to Scottish Cr icket 2000.

cup wins in 1965, 1979, 1999 (4), 2001 and 2002, League championship and Regional and Scottish Cup success has always eluded the Pitmedden side. In the OVD Scottish Junior Cup, the club's best run was to the sixth round in 2000/1 when they went out to eventual winners, Renfrew, when a semi-final place beckoned . Since then it's been third round , second round and second round elimination. Head to head with Tayport, it's been Tayport 5 Formartine O in 1996/97; Formartine O Tayport 3 (Concept Cup 01/02); Formartine I Tayport I (OVD 01/02) ; Tayport 3 Formartine O (OVD replay 01/02) .

It ' s a first home game for new Tayport manager KEITH BURGESS and his assistant STEW ART WILLIAM SON who, along with with DEREK CARR and physio NORRIE MARSHALL comprise the Canniepairt coaching team. Keith (46) played with Linlithgow , Penicuik and Haddington , before moving to Whitburn where he honed his managerial talents as assistant when the Burners won the first Sconish Cup of the new Millennium . Moved on to Glenrothes for the best part of four years , where he established the Warout side amongst the Super League elite . Stewart played with Cowdenbeath and was actually a team-mate of Gus Malone ' s at Central Park in the early 90s. Had a lengthy spell at Meadowbank/Livingstone then moved to Oakley where he was a member of the championship team of 2000, before taking up the post at Glens .

" Super League Champions totally outplayed

by 'Port - but only one point to show for it " says

OllNMOR E

To day's match, whil e still a hugely important and tough fixture , at least offers a welcome distraction from the frustrating quest for Super League points.

Just when we thought a corner had been turned, at Bath gate, things again started to go wrong. The visit of league newcomers, Camelon, should have provided an opportunity to build on the Creamery Park result, but it didn't tum out that way. 'Port had the chances, as always, but it was the Mariners who broke the deadlock, then broke Tayport's spirit with a killer second, as another three points slipped away. Present, however, was Keith Burgess, getting a sneak preview of his new team, and he was firmly established in the hot-seat by the time Tayport made their first ever trip to Laing Park, a fortnight ago. The Bobby Geddes-inspired Gowfers have recently made a habit of keeping 'Port at bay, and did so again, forcing a nil-nil draw . The perform ance, penalty-box notwithstanding , was fairly positive , though .

The squad, therefore , travelled to Linlithgow in confident rriood and that certainly came across on the park. The former Whyte & Mackay East Super League champions totally outplayed the current title holders and, on another day, would have won comfortably. As it was, Keith Burgess had to settle for his second successive draw. On this occasion, there was even a goal, when John Ward tucked away a second half penalty. Unfortun ately, Rose were gifted an equaliser , within ten minutes, before the real drama unfolded. A series of Colin Brown decisions all went in Tayport's favour; another penalty for the Canniepairt men and three red cards for an ill-di sci plin ed Linlithgow . Ultimately, 'Port could not capitalise. Greg Logan saving Wardy's spot kick was the catalyst for a dogged rearguard action by the Prestonfield outfit and, despite playing some good football, there would be no repeat of the late winner , so cherished by th e 'P or t support , on the previous visit to the ground . Hopefull y, th is afternoon's en counter will provide memories to

savour, both for the fans and the new boss, on his home debut.

"NO TOB TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL for

JIMISB AND SIJLLIYAN "

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to everyone for our first Scottish Cup tie of the season. I am excited at the prospect of my first home game since taking over the manager's post from Dave Baikie.

I have been more than encouraged by our team's performance over the last two games. In my first game in charge at Carnoustie we dominated proceedings from start to finish but failed to capitalise on the goalscoring opportunities that came our way.

Last Saturday at Linlithgow, we may have only ended up with a draw but anyone watching could not have failed to be impressed by the manner in which we controlled the game. Defensively we were well organised and limited the Rose to long range efforts which Fitzy dealt with comfortably. After numerous close things around the Linlithgow goal, we were awarded a penalty, for a blatant pu'sh on Barry McNaughton, which was dispatched effortlessly by big John Ward in his usual calm manner.

More chances came our way in our quest for more goals to finish them off. Unfortunately the woodwork twice and a great goalkeeping display kept the score at 1-0 until Linlithgow took advantage of a defensive slip and equalised against the run of play. We again pushed forward in search of the winner and were awarded another spot kick for a foul on Gary Middleton. Then all hell broke in the Rose ranks as two players were sent off for dissent, all of which added unfair tension to the waiting John Ward. The penalty was saved by Gregg Logan before a third Rose player was dismissed for verbally abusing big Wardie on his miss (not a clever thing to do!). Other chances came our way but we found it difficult against an eight man Linlithgow defence camped in their own box. However disappointed we felt, we still left Linlithgow knowing that once again we had come out tops in the battle of the 'big two'.

Training this week has been very upbeat and relaxed in the knowledge that this year's quest for Scottish Cup glory is about to begin. We have no injuries to report following last week's game and big Ralph Hunter is working very hard and is well on his way to full fitness.

Derek, Stewart and myself are relishing the challenges that lie ahead, and I know that we have the full support of the Ca nniepairt faithful.

Enjoy the game and let's make some noise for the Tayport boys. Cheers, 9(,al,.

SNIFFING ABOUT WITH

THE SNOUT

There's been a real ding dong exchange of views on the Scottish Junior s yahoo site over the Linlithgow v Tayport match, particularly over the second pen alty incident . There were well over 20 contributions. Needless to say , the Linlithgow contributor (a committee man) is blaming the referee for everything that happened, but most others making comment have taken a less biased view and ar e generally supportive of the referee. I wouldn't be surprised if the referee accessed the site and was having a good chuckle at the interest which he has creat ed with the flashing of 13 cards.

The less than organised way in which the Junior game is run, was never better illustrated than on the 'Scottish Junior Football' site. In its list of competitions , there is 'The Dugout Inter Regional Cup' wl,ich is played/or by North Divisions (sic) and then there is 'The Dug Out Cup' which is played/or by the East Junior Divisions (sic). Snout thinks it's fair to assume that we're talking about the same competition. However , we 've never seen any publicity from the spon sors or the Northffayside Region FA to enlighten us, so we can't be sure! We played a first round Dugout/Dug Out tie on Sept 11th and the next round won't be dra wn until 19th December

A couple of Formartine manager Dave Cormie's bright young sta rs could miss today ' s game. They acquired tickets for tomorrow's Manchester derb y whilst with their Juvenile club, prior to signing on at Formartine and could decide Old Trafford is preferable to Canniepairt.

Tayport will be without Sean Christie this afternoon . The strik er is off to New York to run in the New York Marathon. Sean, along with his cousin, Neil Fleming, is running in aid of the National Kidne y Fund charity and togeth er they have raised an amazing £18,000 for the fund.

The East Region Executive's decision to make Hill of Beath replay their game against Kelty after three Kelty players had been ordered off and the game abandoned when the referee feared for his safety , has been bombed out by the SJ FA and the match awarded to Haws on appeal. One person who will be happ y is recently resigned Haws secretary Stuart Black who launched a scathin g atta ck on the Internet on East secretary Jock Myles and his committee

Tayport could still field a line-up today from the squad listed for the most recent meeting with Formartine back in December 2002 - Fitzpatrick , Peters, Pa terson, Ward, Wemyss, Craik, Ramsa y, Stewart , McNaughton , Daill y and Gun nion.

lldia ■aaen There was intense speculation in the Press prior to the appointment of Glenrothes' Keith Burgess as Dave Baikie's successor as 'Port boss. The fact that Tayport had held interviews, was reported in both the Daily Record and Press & Journal (Fri 15 Oct) less than 12 hours following the said interviews, despite the club's best efforts to maintain a discreet silence until matters bad been concluded. The Evening Telegraph (Fri 15 Oct) said that the big talking point in Junior circles is 'who will replace Dave Baikie as manager of Tayport?' but also said Port were taking their time before naming a successor. It was the following midweek before the club confirmed that Keith Burgess had been appointed. The local weeklies had been given advance notice, however, to meet their deadlines and the story dominated the back pages of both the Glenrothes Gazette and Fife Herald. Gazette reporter Craig Smith described it as a 'shock resignation' and reported a lengthy interview with Keith in which he said restrictions in the Warout club's budget meant that there wasn't money to spend. He saw the move as a step-up to a position with better prospects in the Junior game. In the Herald, Burgess told their reporter that leaving Glens after four years was a wrench but he had been impressed by the work ethic and ambition of the committee while the Port fans had always impressed him. All in all, he said, it wasn't too hard a decision for him to make.

The Evening Telegraph's Monday page (25 Oct) reporting Keith Burgess' first game in charge, the 0-0 Super League draw with Carnoustie, said "New boss, same old story .... as 'Port fail to find that cutting edge"

The Fife Herald thought that Tayport had been the more threatening team and boss Burgess "couldn't fault his guys for effort and thought his side ran the show and passed the ball well but lacked a cutting edge". On to the following weekend (30 Oct) and the Sunday press was disappointing in its coverage of Linlithgow Rose v Tayport, the top game of the weekend. The game certainly lived up to its billing - but both the Post and Mail failed to give coverage which the contest merited . The Evening Telegraph on Monday (1Nov) chose to concentrate on Carnoustie v Thornton but the Edinburgh Evening News and Daily Record on Monday picked up on the controversy that saw the production of no fewer than JO yellow and 3 red cards - actions which also prompted much debate on the internet. The game dominated the coverage in the News with a lengthy report from Mark Bonthrone and a couple of excellent photos from Kenny Smith. One showing Steven Stewart tackling Rose's Colin Allison and the other showing Mr Brown brandishing a red card at a disbelieving Gordon Herd, the third Rose player to take the long walk. The report raved about the game's entertainment value adding that, regardless of the controversy, "it was the kind of football that has made the Super League a resounding success" It's disappointing that Junior matches such as this, which attracted a better attendance than all but one of Saturday's Bell's second and third division league games, do not merit coverage in the so -called quality press either on Sunday or Monday.

SEASON 1990/91 Season 1990-91 was the year Tayport FC first appeared in the Scottish Junior Cup. Here we take a general look at the Junior scene fourteen years ago. Hill of Beath were the Scottish Cup holders, having beaten Lesmahagow 1-0 before a 'disappointing crowd of around 6,000' the previous May. Among the sides contesting the cup and no longer in the Juniors were Baillieston, Bonnybridge, Preston Athletic, Ormiston Primrose, Tulliallan Thistle, Halbeath, Jubilee Athletic, Clackmannan, Leven Juniors, Inverurie Loco Works, Bon Accord, Crombie Sports, lnsch, Inverurie Juniors, Cuminestown, St Josephs and Balbeggie. From that list, it would appear that the east and north have seen a greater demise in member clubs than their west counterparts. Of those clubs, Tayport played fixtures against only Baillieston, St Josephs, Bon Accord and Balbeggie. Auchinleck Talbot was the dominant club in Ayrshire that season. It could be argued that Talbot's gradual fall from dominance coincided with a hat-trick scored against them by a certain Hamish Mackay couple of years later. In the Central Leagues, Pollok and Arthurlie, both still to the fore today, were the leading lights in the Premier League whilst current top sides, Maryhill and Johnstone Burgh languished in Division Two. In the East Region, Newtongrange Star were to be champions and such was the interest in the club that season, that the kick-off in their final game against runners-up Fauldhouse had to be delayed to allow the 800 crowd into the ground. Star won 8-1 against a Fauldhouse team which was without seven suspended players. The Fife Juniors, somewhat oddly, had an 'A' division and a 'B' division, each with eight teams who played each other three times in the league. Kelty Hearts were to take St Andrews' crown and retain it the following season when Fife returned to a one division format. Bottom of the pile in 1991 were Thornton Hibs and Kirkcaldy YMCA, both currently enjoying better times. Formartine United finished in mid table in the North Region, where the Premier Division was dominated by FC Stoneywood and Inverurie Locos. Formartine, won't want to be reminded of their Scottish Cup experience that season, After being held to a goalless draw at home to RAF Kinloss, United lost to the airmen by the only goal of the game in the replay. On Tayside, Tayport were beginning to make their presence knownin their first season in Division Two, but in Division One Forfar West End, Downfield and Jeanfield Swifts were the dominant forces. Dundee Stobswell FC had withdrawn from the Association, at the start of the season, never to return. An amazing statistic from that season. Eddie Wolecki of St Josephs (now Lochee United manager) was reported to be the top scorer in Tayside with 49 goals. What's amazing is that the rest of the St Josephs team only scored 25 between them
