Necessity of Constant Learning and Unlearning

In an increasinglyc o n s u m e r i s tsociety in whichs u c c e s s i s

measured basedon what oneposses ses orconsumes it isheartening to stillnd many people

who have a passion for working to improvethe lives of the less fortunate or for causessuch as environmental conservation revival

of our ancient culture and traditions orfair treatment of animals (including cowprotection or GauSeva) In some cases theythemselves are not really well off There aremany orphanages old-age homes non-formal schools and shelters for runawayand street children and destitute women etcbeing run by them

There are also some enterprising individuals who have started NGOs by getting themformally registered and working withsmall farmers weavers shermen tribalsgovernment schools and hospitals etc toimprove their lot A few of them are trainedprofessionals with technical and managerialeducation while most of them are justaltruistic civic-minded individuals

The social environment in which theseentities are working is also rapidly changing

as seen in the concerns and expectationsof the fund-providers new technologylegal frameworks opportunities (such associal media and grassroots innovations)

and threats Hence if the VoluntaryOrganisations NGOs do not adapt to thechange they might either stagnate or becomeobsolete without being able to adequatelyserve their target populations

Although our country appears to be on aresurgent growth path still there are largesections of our people (both rural and urban)

who are left out of development To reachthem VOsNGOs need to constantly reecton their work and improve their internalsystems Moreover the quality of largenumber of human resources working at thecutting edge also leaves much to be desiredowing to their poor educational backgroundlow compensation and limited scope forgrowth Apart from strong motivation and

improvement in their working conditionsthey also need to strengthen skills andknowledge ndash in participatory processesproject management raising resources useof technology etc - to empower and bringabout sustainable and signicant change inthe lives of the end-users of their services

Hence it is essential for the NGOs (both

the top management and the staff) tocontinuously unlearn some of their old ways of working and learn newer methods

They might also need to take a relook at the Vision and Mission of their organisationsIn some cases they can even adapt somemanagement tools and techniques from thecorporate sector such as SWOT analysis

Logical Framework Approach (LFA) forproject design Organisational Development(OD) developing long-term strategies fortheir organisations and internalize someuniquely not-for-prot systems such as theLearning Process Approach (so as to beeffective efcient and scale-up)

Tech for Seva believes that the developmentaltriad (Voluntary sector Corporate sector

and Research organisations) needs tocontinuously invest in learning how toserve their target community in the socialsector In this context we had organized aone-day training program in Hyderabad on

September 20th for NGOs with eminentpractitioners as learning facilitators andSri ManepalliNarasimha Rao Senior VicePresident Infosys as the chief guest Thefour main sessions of the program werecarefully selected to address the immediateand long-term requirements of the smallNGOs The details of the sessions are asfollows

In India our primary focus is on Educationand Environment

Education

We identied education of underprivilegedchildren as a focal point of our communityservice efforts since we believe thateducation is the building block of thesociety And through our Communityservice initiatives we have been able to

take concrete steps to address a varietyof important issues We have identied 2primary schools and 1 secondary school




in Hyderabad and 1 higher primary schoolin Bangalore and got associated with themto enhance the experience of education ofthe children attending those schools

The schools we support at Hyderabad as

follows

bull Izzatnagar Government PrimarySchool with 95 children

bull Hazpet Government Primary School with 250 children

bull Kothaguda Government High School with 750 children

In Bangalore we support the followingschool

bull Triveninagar school with 250 children

bull Besides we also support children with special needs at the followinginstitutions

bull Swanthana a home for mentally andphysically retarded abandoned girl

children The home currently houses47 children (Bangalore)

bull Snehadaan an orphanage for HIVinfected children currently housing103 children (Bangalore)

We realized that the mid-day meal schemestarted by the government is a majorincentive for many parents to send theirchildren to school We also noticed thatmost of the children coming to school in themorning do not get breakfast stay hungry inthe morning hours and cannot concentratein their classes while others walk in to theschool around lunch time missing theirmorning sessions We suspected most of thechildren to be undernourished at the sametime We conducted a preliminary health

check up camp in one of our schools wherein the diagnosis revealed that most of the

children suffer from iron deciency anemiaand intestinal worms

As a corrective action we rolled out alsquoBreakfast programrsquo as a pilot projectin August 2013 in partnership with our

NGO Youth For Seva and AkshayapatraFoundation This program directly impactedthe attendance and punctuality of thechildren Parallely we got the doctor toconsult the parents on healthy diet duringgrowing years and addressed each childrsquosissue We are also administering vitamin andiron supplements de worming medicinesin the school Currently we are serving

wholesome breakfast consisting of 200ml milk and wholesome food like upmapoha veg pulav etc

Environment

Environment affairs and our responsibilitytowards the environment is a very seriousconcern for us as an organization We havea lot of focus and put resources behind this

At an enterprise level environment affairsis a separate function part of the socialresponsibility group

In India we have a separate functioncalled Corporate sustainability led by aleadership team member that has lsquoGreenrsquoas an important portfolio demonstrating ourcommitment focus and seriousness towards

the cause

Besides meeting the companyrsquos carbonemission reduction targets this group alsohelps encourage lsquoeveryday actionsrsquo for agreener living across the organization viagreen teams spread across the company All our ofce buildings in all locations inIndia are LEED certied structures which

brings about a 35 reduction in powerconsumption and 30 reduction in waterconsumption as compared to conventional




buildings Within this environment we alsohave a very enthusiastic group of volunteersand team members who are driven by thisconcept of green and like to bring abouta change and difference by their efforts Through our green team volunteers we havefocused on reducing usage of paper powerand plastic in our premises and continuouslystrive to bring about a change in behaviorof team members We have run campaignson reducing the usage of paper cups doublesided printing etc As an organization wepromote alternategreener modes ofcommute and have a dedicate Runners and

Riders Club driving our efforts on this frontOur WFC facilities are tted with Digitaldisplay units eradicating the usage of paperin form of communication collaterals We have electric car service dedicated forcampus commute We have framed a e-wastepolicy and all our e-waste is disposed in anenvironmentally safe way

We also invest in external projects in andaround our community projects that helpbalance the ecology and bring about longterm sustainability We have adopted 2 lakesin Bangalore our association with theformer the Kaikondarahalli Lake has been abig success generating a lot of goodwill fromthe community the success of which droveus to adopt the second lake in the city the

Kawdanahalli lake We undertake large scaletree plantations support urban biodiversityin form of greening of trafc islands androad medians

How Wells Fargorsquos association with Youth ForSeva [one of the TFSorganizers] has helped in executingCSR activities or identifying NGOs

YFS is the rst NGO we started to work with when we started our community

work four years ago YFS working model

of harnessing individual strength for the

community development suited to engage

our employees in community work First few

projects of YFS are also the rst projects for

us Because of their committed volunteers YFS executed effectively

Clarity of work transparency and their

commitment to the cause had helped in

winning our trust

YFS in identifying other NGOs

YFS works in community projects other

than schools but we have not worked withthem on those projects With respect to the

education projects they have wide reach

in the community When we come across

smaller NGOs and want to help them YFS

has helped us in accomplishing the task

For example PSS Trust is an NGO run

by an individual Though PSS Trust was

doing good work they did not have enough

documents to receive funds from abroad YFS bridged the gap and ensured PSS

Trust is benetted YFS did not have any

qualms with other NGOs when we want to

associatehelp other NGOs Because they

believe that all are in this sphere for the

better community development

What YFSTFS can learn from other

countries

With my experience in Wells Fargo

Philippines reporting and showcasing the

success stories can be better For example

with respect to our breakfast program the

teachers comment that they could see a

change with the kids attendance But we

didnrsquot have the exact metrics to showcase




What are theyou face as a CSRexecutive in selecting an NGO orexecuting CSR activities In what waythe TFS team can help you

We always look for documents such as

registration FCRA statement of accountsand so on Many NGOs who do exemplary work do not havemaintain the documentsthat will help them to apply to get fundsfrom corporates It will be good if TFS canaddress these issues

How can we build a strong nexusof Corporates NGOs and research

communities in order to further the

growth of this nation especially for theunfortunate ones

We have lot of people who work in the spaceof technology There should be a way to usetheir skills in the development sphere We

want to know if any social problems can besolved by the use of our technical expertiseI believe many working professionals are willing to contribute to the society throughtheir skills and talents NGOs reachcorporations only for funding But theyshould also reach corporations to improvetheir employeersquos skills such as developing websites mobile apps project management

tools and so on

NGO Workshop for Effective Community Development

For NGO to conduct its communitydevelopment activities effectively andefficiently they need to be made aware

about the process management methodsof planning human resource managementand nancial management Tech ForSeva(TFS) feels the great need for various trainingprograms for NGOs Continuing on the sameidea TFS organized a day long workshop on20th Sept 2015 at ECE Auditorium OsmaniaUniversity In this workshop NGOs fromall over the state participated and learned

various aspects of planning nance andcommunity mobilization Representativesfrom 100 NGOs in Telangana amp AndhraPradesh participated in the workshop

expressed the need for such workshop andintroduced the complete agenda of the workshop to the audience

First session on ldquoCommunity Mobilizationamp Sustainabilityrdquo was taken by Prof KVRaju He stressed on the need to balancethe growth with sensible consumption Hementioned to grow we need consumers butto prosper we need sensible consumptionIn his session he covered the intricaciesand methods of Sustainable development

Community empowering processCommunity Change process While coveringthe point of trinity of empowerment (Iccha Jnana Kriya) he expressed that lack of clear vision as to what constitutes the qualitativeenrichment of life and how to use increasing




earnings and energies to that end leads to wasting and frittering While concludinghe classied various leadership styles andmentioned the need for transformationalleadership style for sustainable communitydevelopment

A session on Logical Framework Approachto plan amp design various communityprogram was taken by Sri GV KrishnaGopal He articulated the method of howto logically place the various factors involvedin particular program In his detailed sessionhe covered following points

Sri P Venugopal Reddy took session onGovernment benefits and OrganizationChallenges which was quite engaging and

informative He explained how NGOscan be a great catalyst in implementing the various government policies and schemeseffectively He explained in detail about various government schemes and examplesof how NGO participation helped inimplementing the schemes He mentioned

the difculties NGOs face while engaging with government institution He also coveredthe methods to resolve these difculties

Conclusion

Finally Sri Aekka Chandra Shekar in hisconcluding remarks stressed the role ofcorporates NGOs and intellectuals in socialservice He concluded by giving some veryinteresting examples of few communityservice programs creatively finding newmethods to bring growth and prosperity inthe society

Allika ndash Empowering women through Skill development

Allika creates sustainable communitylivelihood by empowering women throughskilled apprenticeship One of the agship

program of the NGO is manufacturinghandmade crafts from water hyacinth NGOprovides training to women in weaving skillsalong with entrepreneurial skills As of nowNGO has trained 40 women in two different villages Some of the products made by the women participating in the program aredinning mats coasters lunch box bags waterbottle bags hand purse hand bags baskets

hats and eco accessories Water hyacinth isaquatic weed which creates lots of problemsto water bodies Every year governmentspends billions of rupees only to clear waterhyacinth from irrigation canals

Shaik Abdul Mujeeb a graduate in ElectricalEngineering founded Allika in 2014 witha small group of women from one of the

vil lage near Tenali Currently the teamconsists of 40 women Shaik Nazneen isoperational manager and motivates the women in village and helps them to learnother skills NGO is active in Pedaravuru a village near Tenali

NGO first selects a village where local

pondslakesirrigation canals are lled with water hyacinth and then hire unemployedmen for procurement of water hyacinth

Semi illiterate and illiterate women aretrained in weaving skills Artisans makedifferent products from water hyacinthNGO collects products from differentartisans and sell them in major cities NGOalso uses its Facebook page for sales activity

The major challenge faced by NGO is toconvince local women and their families to

come out of their houses for training Alsoto get permissions from local governmentbodies to get water hyacinth from waterbodies NGO also partnered with DRDAGuntur for training of 30 women in villagenear Tenali NGO received support fromUnLtd Hyderabad and NABARD for theirtraining activities

Allika wants to reach different villages in Telengana and Andhra Pradesh where waterhyacinth is available and train local womenthere They plan to train at least 100 womenby the end of the year Also Allika plans toopen a retail outlet and an online portal forboosting their sales activities
