CONTENTS and LEGAL TOPICS
Frequently Asked Questions – EXTERNAL USE
INTRODUCTION
On November 29th, enhanced Texts and Annotations Document Display and enhanced
Persistent Table of Contents features on WestlawNext Canada will be released. This FAQ has
been prepared to inform you about these enhancements.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Q: What are the Texts and Annotations Enhanced Document Display, Persistent Table of
Contents and new Legal Topics enhancements?
A: This set of enhancements allows you to seamlessly read documents in a single display with a
new reading mode for individual texts and annotations, and provides a browsable and linkable
Table of Contents. The Legal Topics enhancements allow users to obtain results across a variety
of content types and link to content such as case law, Canadian Encyclopedic Digest, expert
commentary from across content collections on WestlawNext Canada, including Legal
Memoranda, select Litigator documents, commentary, and eLooseleafs on ProView.
FEATURES & FUNCTIONALITY OVERVIEW:
Q: What are the main features of the Texts and Annotations enhancements on WestlawNext
Canada?
A: The main features include:
Enhanced and Persistent Tables of Contents
o Each Text and Annotations title on WestlawNext Canada features a re-designed
publication landing page with enhanced Table of Contents functionality. The
Table of Contents for each title will be persistent and easier to navigate with
display features allowing users to know exactly where they are in the
publication as they navigate the TOC. Browsing from one section of the text is
easier and more efficient. The New ‘tree’ style Table of Contents on the landing
page for individual Texts and Annotations allows you to browse and search the
Table of Contents on one page.
o A new Reading Mode allows you to navigate an individual WestlawNext Canada
Text and Annotation publication like a book. The Table of Contents moves as
you move through a particular section or title and each succeeding section
follows via the continuous scrolling feature.
Enhanced and Browsable and Navigable Indices
o Easy access to Indices for more Texts and Annotations. These enhancements
include persistent ‘ABC’ navigation links within the index for convenient
browsing, and the ability to search the indices for a particular text and
annotation title. You can also search the index for a particular publication for a
word or phrase.
New Auto-fill feature on the Library Page
o Allows you to zero-in on the specific publication you are looking for from among
the full list of all available texts and annotations titles. With this feature, you
can quickly locate a specific title in the library by beginning to type the title of
the book or author name in the search query box at the top of the page. As text
is typed, titles of text and annotations publications containing words or phrases
matching what is typed appear in the drop-down menu. The user selects the
particular publication sought from this drop-down and is taken to the landing
page for that specific publication.
Browse Legal Topics
Q: What is Browse Legal Topics?
A: Browse Legal Topics is a new way to do legal research. Where topical browsing has
already existed for case law digests and with individual table of contents for discreet
text, this new enhancement allows researchers to receive results that are editorially
identified as being relevant to particular issues or topics
Q: What content is included in Legal Topics?
A: At launch the following content is included within the legal topics: cases and
decisions, legal memorandum, Canadian Encyclopedic Digest, Texts and annotations on
WLNC (topical areas will be added in phases after launch) other than annotated acts.
Q: What content is coming to Legal Topics in the future?
A: After launch we will be working to add a selection other content types including
Proview eLoosleaf titles to Legal Topics. As content is added, this will be communicated
to customers.
Q: How are egal topics different from the Canadian Abridgment?
A: The taxonomy or organization scheme used to identify the legal topics is powered by
the Canadian Abridgment and is based on the Canadian Abridgment Key which is used to
classify our abridgment digests currently. However, browsing the Canadian Abridgment
digests will only lead a researcher to caselaw digests. Browsing legal topics will allow
researchers to identify a variety of material on the same topic when conducting their
research.
Q: How can I access material identified by legal topics?
In order to browse legal topics you can access the table a variety of ways as follows:
From the main WLNC home page there are two links as follows:
From individual documents you can access the specific legal topics (and more material
on those topics) as follows:
CED
Legal memoranda
Texts

as part of their WestlawNext Canada subscription?
A: No. Access to individual eLooseleaf titles shown in the library will require a separate
subscription to each of those titles, though they will show up in the search results.
Q: How will customers know if they have access to an eLooseleaf title or not?
A: An “out of plan” banner will appear to the right of eLooseleaf title in the list of publications
to which the customer does not currently subscribe. The absence of such a banner indicates the
customer subscribes to this title and can access it via the Texts and Annotations page.
