What does Joel mean?Jehovah is God

When did Joel prophecy? He may have lived as early as the time of Elisha (late 800 B.C.s), or as late as the time of Jeremiah, Lehi, & Daniel (early 600s to late 500 B.C.s).

Who is quoting who?He is either original and quoted by many or he synthesizes the words of former prophets before him. The Prophecy of Joel

Many elements of this prophecy are almost universally applicable. It applies to:

Elishas timeJeroboams timeIsaiahs timeJeremiahs timeJesus & Peters timeJoseph Smiths timeOur timeOn September 22, 1823 as the Angel Moroni taught Joseph Smith, "He ... quoted the second chapter of Joel, from the twenty-eighth verse to the last. He also said that this was not yet fulfilled, but was soon to be" (JS-H 1:41).

From the day that He [the Father] and His Beloved Son manifested themselves to the boy Joseph, there has been a tremendous cascade of enlightenment poured out upon the world.

President Gordon B. Hinckley (Ensign, Nov. 2001, p.4)

The vision of Joel has been fulfilled wherein he declared:And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. (Joel 2:28-32).President Gordon B. Hinckley (Ensign, Nov. 2001, p.4)

There has been more of scientific discovery during these years than during all of the previous history of mankind. Transportation, communication, medicine, public hygiene, the unlocking of the atom, the miracle of the computer, with all of its ramifications, have blossomed forth, particularly in our own era.

President Gordon B. Hinckley (Ensign, Nov. 2001, p.4)

I do not believe that this great outpouring of knowledge happened by chance. All of this secular knowledge did not come solely from the creative minds of men and women. Mankind has been on the earth a long time. Over the centuries, knowledge came at a snails pace.I believe that the appearance of God the Father and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, in 1820 to Joseph Smith unlocked the heavens not only to the great spiritual knowledge revealed in this dispensation but also to secular knowledge.President James E. Faust(Ensign, May 2000, 17)

New ideas, including scientific inventions and discoveries of better ways of doing things, were being produced annually at 39 a year from 4,000 b.c. to a.d. 1, contrasted to 3,840 new ideas a year in the 19th century, while today they are created at the rate of 110,000 a year. President James E. Faust(Ensign, May 2000, 17)

How have you been blessed by the fulfillment of Joels prophesy?

(Ie. How has modern technology blessed your life?)I maintain that had there been no restoration of the gospel, and no organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there would have been no radio; there would have been no airplane, and there would not have been the wonderful discoveries in medicine, chemistry, electricity, and the many other things wherein the world has been benefited by such discoveries.

Joseph Fielding Smith(Doctrines of Salvation, 1: 175)Under such conditions these blessings would have been withheld, for they belong to the dispensation of the fullness of times of which the restoration of the gospel and the organization of the Church constitute the central point, from which radiates the Spirit of the Lord throughout the world.

Joseph Fielding Smith(Doctrines of Salvation, 1: 175)Q: Does this mean that inventors are inspired of God? Does this mean that God pouring out his spirit upon all flesh means that He is giving people ideas for inventions which will help move the work along?

A: In part, yes.

Q: Are most inventors LDS? Are they religious people? Mormon InventorsAnd it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. (Joel 2:28-32).

One example of how this was fulfilled. This Mormon farm boy, in 1921, was breaking up soil with his uncle's horse-drawn harrowwhen the idea walloped him. He gazed at the plowed rows of dirt behind him, and a vision of a line of excited electrons danced in his head. And so, the idea for television was born. Farnsworth was only 14 years old.

Philo T. FarnsworthIn high school he carried this idea in his head: You could transmit an image of an object from one place to another by converting the picture into electricity and shooting the stream of electrons at a fluorescent screen in a vacuum tube. To show his chemistry teacher, Justin Tolman, how it worked, Farnsworth scribbled a diagram of his idea on the school blackboard. He was 15.

"I am a deeply religious man, I know that God exists," said Farnsworth in a KSL interview a year before his death. "I know that I have never invented anything. I have been a medium by which these things were given to the culture as fast as culture could earn them. I give the credit to God."

Philo T. FarnsworthTelevision is a gift from God. And He will hold those who utilize this instrument accountable to Him.

Philo T. Farnsworth (LDS inventor of TV)

TV is not the enemy. Satan is!

25Philo T. Farnsworths son, Kent, summed up how his father felt about how the TV is being used.

He would say to his children, in essence,

"Theres nothing on it worthwhile, and were not going to watch it in this household, and I dont want it in your intellectual diet."JonahWho is Jonah?

What does Jonah mean?Dove.

When did Jonah prophecy? He prophesied during the reign of Jeroboam II, approximately 788 B.C.

Interesting FactJonahs book is not written by Jonah but another writer some time after Jonahs mission is complete.

Jonah 1:3

Jonah 1:3No Tarshish will ever be better than the Nineveh the Lord calls you to.Why is Jonah running?

Jonahs mission was a mission of mercy to a Gentile people whom he (and most Israelites) believed were unfit for Gods mercy.

He didnt believe the Ninevite heathens deserved Gods mercy (see Jonah 4:1-3).

Jonah 1:4-15

Jonah was a prophet, tried to run away.Didnt go to Nineveh, instead he went astray.A Storm began to rock his boat going to Tarshish,Overboard they threw him and God said to a fish:

Swallow the prophet!Swallow the prophet!Swallow the prophet!He went astray.Swallow the prophet!Swallow the prophet!Swallow the prophet!He went astray.

Alma 27:17

Now the joy of Ammon was so great even that he was full; yea, he was swallowed up in the joy of his God, even to the exhausting of his strength; and he fell again to the earth.

Every missionary gets swallowed up in something! Alma 27:17

Now the joy of Ammon was so great even that he was full; yea, he was swallowed up in the joy of his God, even to the exhausting of his strength; and he fell again to the earth.

Every missionary gets swallowed up in something! When you run from the Lord you eventually end up in

Jeffrey R. HollandQuorum of the Twelve(BYU Speeches, 13 January 2009)This message is perfect for all of the Jonahs in the world and for the Jonah in each of us. 43Let people repent. Let people grow. Believe that people can change and improve. Is that faith? Yes! Is that hope? Yes! Is it charity? Yes! Above all, it is charity, the pure love of Christ.

This message is perfect for all of the Jonahs in the world and for the Jonah in each of us. 44AmosWho is Amos?

What does Amos mean?Burden.

When did Amos prophecy? He was contemporary with Jonah & Isaiah. He prophesied during the reign of king Uzziah of Judah and Jeroboam II of Israel, approximately 780-740 B.C.

Interesting FactAmos was a shepherd from Tekoa, 12 miles south of Jerusalem. Who is Amos?Amos 1:1Amos 7:14-15Text

Who is the Lion? Amos 1:2Sometimes prophets messages are not popular. As a result

Amos 2:11-12; 5:10For exampleAmos 7:10-17Popular or not?Amos 4:1Israelite women are like

Popular or not?Bashan was an area with very rich in vegetation. Thus, the cows of Bashan fared quite sumptuously from day to day. What better analogy for the wealthy indulgent women of Israel who care only for themselves?

53

Amos 4:2-3What will happen to them? The Assyrians were known for putting hooks through the lips, noses, or cheeks of their enemies and linking them to one another with a chain. Linking captives made them easy to guard and herd away to captivity.54How has the Lord tried to warn Israel?

Amos 4:6-11(Cf. Helaman 12:3)

So now what?

Amos 4:12; 5:27; 6:14; 8:1-2Amos Prophecy of Hope

Amos 9:8-15HoseaWho is Hosea?

What does Hosea mean?Help; deliverance; and salvation. This name is derived from the same root as Joshua and Jesus.

When did Hosea prophesy? From approximately 755 B.C. to 725 B.C. He was contemporary with Amos, Isaiah, and Micah.

To whom did Hosea prophesy? His main audience was Israel, the Northern Kingdom, his native land. HoseaThe Greatest Love Story Ever Told

59The Strangest Commandment?Hosea 1:2-3

Isaiah 54:5. For thy Maker is thine husband.

Jeremiah 3:14. For I am married unto you.In what ways was Israel unfaithful to the Lord?

Hosea 4:1-2, 12Hosea 5:3-5

What will be the immanent consequences?

Hosea 9:17Hosea 13:16

69Have you ever departed from the Lord?

Have you ever been unfaithful to your covenants?

Have you ever gone after the things of this world rather than stay true to your God?

If youve ever done this, what are you?70You Are aGomer

71If Israel wants to come back to the Lord, do you think He will have them back? Can He ever trust them again?72

Hosea 2:14-16, 19-20, 23What does Christ do, in the long run, after Israel (and we) have been unfaithful to Him?73How Merciful is the Lord?

Hosea 13:9 Hosea 14:4 Mosiah 26:30 (p. 198, B of M)

Henry B. Eyring Quorum of the Twelve(CES Symposium, 1995)This was not a story about a business deal between partners. This was a love story. This was a story of a marriage covenant bound by love, by steadfast love. What I felt then, and it has increased over the years, was that the Lord, with whom I am blessed to have made covenants, loves me, and you with a steadfastness about which I continually marvel and which I want with all my heart to emulate.75Concluding Thoughts The Message of the Book of Jonah:

God is a God of second chances. His love is not confined to a single nation.

The Message of the Books of Joel, Amos, & Hosea:

God punishes sin and rewards righteousness. Israel will be scattered for her wickedness for a season, but will, in the latter-days, be gathered again through the mercy of the Lord.God is merciful.EndBlues49083.516Blues25756.855Blues70921.55526526.424
