Passage 1With radios people could listen to music and news. Radios also brought sporting events from around the country into peoples homes.Like radio, the movies began before the 1920s. But early movies were silent. It was during the 1920s that movies got sound. The Jazz Singer, shown in 1927, was the first movie with voices. Within three years, millions of people were going to talkies, or movies with sound, each week.

Both radio and the movies brought a common culture to the people of the United States. For the first time, people from Maine to California could hear the same music and the same shows on the radio. Americans could also learn what life was like in other parts of the United States.
