Well the first six months of 2013 are in the books, and the dogdays of summer are upon us. The spring sales were well attended, prices were up, enthusiasm at the sales was electrifying, and youcould actually see FUN make its way back into the ring. Themembership, staff and TLBAA Board of Directors have been extremelyproductive and progress has been made on a number of fronts so farthis year.I want to take this opportunity to give you an update on the state

of the TLBAA. Back in January of this year, I stated to the membershipthat the TLBAA is priority #1. Our mission is to get our own house inorder and operate like a successful business. This means beinggrounded by our articles of incorporation, following our bylaws andguided by our purpose and mission. In spite of a number of curve balls thrown our way early on, we

have remained disciplined and focused on the work of the TLBAAand the BIG 3 and it has paid off in the following ways:We now have accurate and current financial statements and have

started the budget planning process for 2013-14. This is a HUGEaccomplishment, and we thank Mike for his leadership and DonnaShimanek for the enormous amount of hours she put into getting usto this point.Secondly, Mike Coston, our new CEO, has transitioned into his

leadership role with the TLBAA. He has been on the road and on thephone getting to know the membership and hearing what you haveto say. Mike was clearly the right choice to lead our association. Hehas provided and implemented several new innovative and freshideas and has more in the works. The office staff has becomeincreasingly more aware that we are a membership drivenorganization and that the staff are here to serve. Finally, reorganizing and upgrading our infrastructure continues.

We have made numerous positive changes thus far in the office to bemore efficient, effective and productive to support the membershipsneeds and goals. We have more to do, but we are headed in the rightdirection and tremendous things are ahead. In addition to focusing on the BIG 3, we have been working on

a number of other projects to further the TLBAA mission and supportthe needs of the membership.

    1. The Committee Description Structure System is up and running with 9 fully functional committees, seated with excited members working hard on behalf of the membership. These committees, working along side our affiliates, are the backbone in helping get the necessary work done to meet thememberships needs. 2. The World Show in Fort Worth, TX took place a few weeks ago and was a big success. Entries were up from 342 to 456 this year. Congratulations to all the participants and winners.A big THANK YOU to all the volunteers and Larry Barker withAutobahnanza who made this event such a big success. In addition to the talented volunteers and hard work of everyone involved, we especially want to thank John and Diann Chase with Autobahnanza for their support of TLBAA in hosting the awards banquet for TLBT and TLBAA, we couldnot have done this without them. We want to also congratulatethem on the enormous success for the 2013 Autobahnanza and thank them as well as congratulate them for giving so much to the youth involved in the Longhorn breed.3. We have a very special anniversary celebration coming up May 9th 11th, 2014. The TLBAA 50th anniversary will be cel-ebrated and what a blow out this event is going to be. This committee is led by Robert and Kim Richey and Larry and Glen Smith, and we appreciate their leadership in organizingthis event. This will be a must attend event you do not want to miss. 4. We continue to make progress on the new office and museum building project for the TLBAA. We are nearing the bid submission phase of the project, and John Parmley and his committee are eager to start turning some dirt. We hope tobe in our new facility mid to late 2014. 5. With a new office building and museum comes the need to raise funds to pay for this new facility, and Bernard Lankfordand his committee are leading this effort. It will take all of usto dig deep and give what you can to help make this much needed facility become a reality.6. Mike Coston recently had a marketing consultant in for 2 days to talk to the staff about our Trailsmagazine and how toimprove the quality, increase relevant content, grow the magazine, have a more user friendly layout and increase

advertising and standout in the industry. 7. Mike Coston, Jim Rombeck and myself attended an all-industry roundtable meeting in Glen Rose, TX on May 17th. We felt the meeting was productive and apositive first step towards improving cooperation between the organizations ina number of areas that will benefit the breed, breeders and industry. At the conclusion of the meeting, we were encouraged to hear support for working together on developing breeder educational seminars, improving show judging certification and training, and exploring affiliate/show circuit cooperation. We look forward to future discussions and meetings to discusspositive solutions to these topics and growing these opportunities.8. The TLBAA Board of Directors received a letter dated May 28th, 2013 from Mr. Gravett, TLMA Chairman of the Board, inviting the TLBAA to join the 2014 Longhorn Extravaganza creating one annual horn measuring event. This created a lotof healthy discussion between individual TLBAA Board of Directors and members culminating in a TLBAA Board of Directors meeting June 25th to discuss the letter and invitation.

The TLBAA membership organized and produced the first HornShowcase 13 years ago making this event the longest running hornmeasuring event in the industry to date. This rich history and annualtradition of hosting the Horn Showcase each year has become anindustry highlight. This year, the new Horn Showcase steeringcommittee has made several enhancements by adding a non-halteredshow, educational seminars, expanded Bull Alley and added newrecognition for producing bulls and cows. In addition, weintroduced a special participation promotion for ITLA and CTLRregistered cattle. We welcome and encourage all breeders from allorganizations who wish to participate in the Horn Showcase to joinus this year. The TLBAA Board of Directors discussed the TLMAs invitation

and made the decision to continue to build on the rich history andtradition of producing and hosting the Horn Showcase in 2014. Theboard respectfully declined the offer to merge the TLBAA HornShowcase with the Longhorn Extravaganza in 2014. As stated earlier in this letter, at the Glen Rose meeting there were

a number of other industry topics identified and discussed. Ingeneral, everyone seemed optimistic that we could come together towork and improve on these topics for the betterment of the breed, breeders and the industry. Speaking of the Horn Showcase, it is coming up this October and

is poised to be the biggest and best to date. The Horn Showcasesteering committee led by Justin Rombeck, the Horn Showcase Chair-David Roberts and the Horn Showcase Sale Chair-Dawn Divinia haveput together an amazing weekend. Be a part of this amazing event bybecoming a sponsor, entering your cattle in the measurement contestand/or non-haltered show, consign to the Horn Showcase sale orbring your bull to be part of Bull Alley. You also will have a chanceto participate in the educational seminars and have the opportunityto catch up with friends and meet new breeders. These are exciting times. The TLBAA has a lot going on. We still

have more work to do in a number of areas. We are headed in theright direction and great things are to come. There is enthusiasm inthe air and a spirit of cooperation. It takes all of us to make theTLBAA the best it can be. As we move forward, we must stay focusedon continuing to get our own house in order but lead the way inreaching out and working with other organizations to make theindustry stronger which will benefit the breed, you the breeders andthe industry.

See ya at the Horn Showcase in Fort Worth, TX October 9th 13th.

Todd McKnight, Chairman of the BoardTexas Longhorn Breeders Association of America

From the Chairman of the Board-State Of The TLBAA

  • From his boyhood in the farmlands of central Illinois, Rex Mosser was thebeneficiary of considerate kindness, an attribute that has been both a her-itage and a legacy that continues to benefit those in his sphere of influencetoday. Raised by his mother until the age of eight, circumstances caused himto live with another family from that time until he was eighteen.

The father figure in that family, Paul Mullins, is now 92 and Mosser returns toIllinois twice a year to visit him. They were the ones that raised me, said Mosser. He is such a wonderful

man he took me in and raised me and taught me right from wrong, gave mea good heads-up on life, what to do, what not to do, and I just love him todeath. At age 18, Mosser left Illinois for California, and after a year there, joined the

U.S. Navy Seabees for a four-year hitch. A Seabee is a member of the Navy Con-struction Battalion (CB). The word "Seabee" comes from initials "CB". TheSeabees have a history of building bases, bulldozing and paving thousands ofmiles of roadway and airstrips, building bridges and accomplishing many otherconstruction projects in a wide variety of military theaters dating back to WorldWar II. I just loved it, he said. I went to 17 different countries, and I think it is one

of the best things I ever did. It taught me I could do things I didnt like to do andsmile while I was doing it; I could eat food that wasnt necessarily my favorites;it taught me nobody was better than me and I wasnt better than anybody else.I could get up at 2 oclock in the morning and stand my watch or whatever elseI needed to do. It taught me so much that I would not trade the four years Ispent in the Navy Seabees for a college education.I learned a lot of construction skills in the Navy, and when I got out I went

    to Chicago and worked there for ten years in steel fabrication. I met Vicki at thattime and we got married. Then in 1973, we moved to Texas and I went to workfor another company. In 1983 I switched jobs and went to work as vice-presi-dent for about eight years, and then in 1990 I decided to start my own.I started off with three employees and the first year we did $683,000 in sales;

thirteen years later I sold the business and I was doing $36 million a year andhad 125 employees. His company did steel fabrication for schools, high-rise office buildings, shop-

ping centers, hospitals and structures of that nature. Working from architectsdrawings, they would get the steel fabricated, set up the pieces and weld it all up.Sometimes it was in the contract to help erect the steel, depending on the re-quirements of the general contractor.

RETIREMENT AND LONGHORNSIn 1999, Mosser retired and in 2003 sold Myrex Industries, and really retired.

He and Vicki had built a new house and were living on Lake Conroe. After sixmonths puttering around the new house, Rex got bored and bought 56 acres the first part of their ranch at Midway, Texas, in the fall of 1999.I had to have something to do, he said, so the first thing I did is go out and

buy three cows. Somebody from Bryan was advertising in the Houston Chron-icle for Longhorns for sale, and I was so smart on cattle, I went and bought twosteers and a bull. I didnt know there was an organization such as the ITLA or theTLBAA or anything and he didnt tell me. I didnt have a trailer so he broughtthem over here to me, dropped them off and I paid him and he left.I went around and started buying more, and the second batch I bought, the

people wanted to know which organization I wanted to register them in. I said,Well, I didnt know anything about any organization. They told me the cowswere registered ITLA, and I said, Lets just do it there, then.So I got in my car, took all the papers I had up there and joined up. They

were extremely nice; we were sitting in that office in the back, up there in FortWorth, and she was laughing because I was so dumb on everything. We sat thereand talked and laughed and did all the paper work, and they were really great, helping me do that. When I came back, somebody said, What about TLBAA? I said I dont knowanything about that one, so I gathered up the registration papers I had and wentto TLBAA, and I dual-registered cows that I had paid $500 apiece for.I had known John Stockton for about 25 years because he was in steel fabri-

cation, too, but I never knew he raised Longhorns. All we talked about was steelfabrication and jobs. Then when I found that out, I called him one day andasked if he was raising Longhorns and he said yes, he had a bunch of them. Sohe invited me to his ranch.I went down to his ranch and took the tour, and John has a bunch of real

  • good cows. When I got out of the truck, Days Feisty Fannie wasstanding there a hundred yards from the truck looking at me. I saidHoly cow! Look at that! How much is that cow?John told Mosser he would have to go to Red McCombs to buy thatcow because she was already consigned to the Red McCombs sale.Mosser said, Who in the hell is Red McCombs? He had neverheard of Red McCombs because he wasnt into sports and had neverpaid any attention, but Stockton promised to fix him up and mailhim a catalog. When Mosser got home, he told Vicki, We dont have anythingbut billy goats. All of our Longhorn cows dont have any more hornthan a billy goat. You ought to have seen that cow! When we got the McCombs sale catalog, we did our research anddecided we would go as far as $35,000 we wouldnt pay any morethan that for her. At the sale, Vicki was talking to everybody andlooking at Days Feisty Fannie, and she came up to me and said Ithink we need to raise that to $40,000 and I said OK, but no morethan that. The bid went to $40,000 in about 60seconds and I said OK, stop. She lookedat me and smiled and said That cowsgoing to Midway, Texas and she raisedher hand. And raised her hand. When shegot done, she paid $59,000 and I was sit-ting there in total shock. Fifty-nine thou-sand dollars for a cow! The most I hadpaid for any cow was $525!She got up and took pictures and allthis, and I sat there stunned for a coupleof minutes and decided I needed a beer.So I walked over to the tree where thehorse trough with the beer was. I got mea beer and was standing there, drinking abeer and leaning against the tree, andsomebody that lives right there near RedMcCombs, has some real good cows, came up to me, shook my hand and saidThank you. And I said for what, and hesaid, Ive got some good cows, and youjust raised the price of my cows $10,000.I thought about what he said and had toreach down and get me another beer.At that time, the only people we knewin the Longhorn business was John andHelen Stockton, but it didnt take long toget acquainted after that. And after that, when any good long-horned cows came up for sale, Vicki justwent and bought em. And she paid prettygood dollars for a lot of them. She likedthe bidding process and the buying. When wed get them home, she would goout and look at them, but the rest of it wasmine.

ZECH DAMRON, STARLIGHT AND CLONINGMosser got acquainted with ZechDameron who had just cloned Starlight, which at that time was the longest-horned cow in the registry. Hetold Dameron he wanted to clone Days Feisty Fannie, and wantedto hang onto Damerons coattails because he didnt know anythingabout it.So we cloned Days Feisty Fannie, Mosser recalls, and got allthat started. Zech was the first one to clone Texas Longhorns, I wasthe second then Ron Marquess was the third when he clonedCameo. We bought one of Zechs clones from Starlight, we had thenine clones from Day's Feisty Fannie, then we bought one of RonsCameo clones.

When Mosser got into the Longhorn business Zech Dameron wasdoing a lot of AI, embryo transplants and cloning. Mosser went toDamerons ranch several times when they were doing flushes andrelated work, to learn how to do it. And then, of course, said Dameron, he expanded greatly pastwhat I ever did, including a lot more cloning. He cloned some of thebest animals at the time with Ron Marquess and Wesley Watson. He bought the first clone at the Horn Showcase about 2004, Ithink. It was a Starlight clone consigned by Dameron, who recalls, Itwas a big event at that time.

SORROW AND SCHOLARSHIPSThe excitement of bidding, buying and cloning gave way to sor-row when Philip, one of Rex and Vickis three sons, died in 2005.When Vicki also died a few months later, in January of 2006, several

members of the Longhorn fraternity, en-couraged by Bill Hudson (thank you, Bill),worked with Rex to form the Mosser Fam-ily Memorial Scholarship Fund. ZechDameron was tapped to administer thefund, assisted by Buck Adams and RobertFenza.Weve given scholarships since 2006,

Dr. Dameron reported, depending onhow much money we have. Weve givenlarger amounts and lesser amounts, de-pending on the economy and if we couldget donations. There were 12 or 15 recipients this

year, and I would think over 100 overall. Some have received more than one award we didnt limit it to one time. Julie Pack,Kathryn Head, Sarah Galloway and someothers have gotten several scholarships. Ifeel real good about it those girls arestars; they have done well, theyre appre-ciative and nice.I like to see people successful in life,

and education is one route to make amark in life.To help ensure continuity in future

funding for the scholarship program, Rexhas given some high-quality cows to RonMarquess and Wesley Watson, who willprovide a calf annually to help fund theprogram. Dameron notes that it will be alittle harder without Rex there, because henot only donated, but he was always amajor contributor.Essentially, observed Dameron, we

have given a scholarship to everybody thatapplied if they could meet the deadline.Everybody that applied in time last yeargot one, and its been going on like thatseveral years. But it is hard to say no to achild that wants to go to college.

Everybody gets the same amount in a given year. We have givenas high as $10,000; last year it was $2,000 it just depends. I hopewe can continue giving it out. It is a good thing and it has helpedseveral. We just need more donations, and we need to figure out away to do that.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTSJulie Pack, one of the multiple recipients, is currently in her clin-ical year of veterinary school at Texas A&M and will graduate in May

Vicki Mosser celebrates her victory as the win-ning bidder of Days Feisty Fannie.

  • 2014. Last year, she took a commissionwith the United States Army and whenshe graduates, she will serve as a Captainin the Army Vet Corps for three years.I first received a Mosser Family Schol-

arship when I was in graduate school atTexas A&M, Julie reported. I was sopleased to get the scholarship because as agraduate student there were so few schol-arships available. Since that time I havebeen a repeat recipient and I can barelybegin to express how much it means tome that Mr. Mosser is so supportive of theyouth in our educational careers. I havehad the opportunity on several occasionssince then to talk with Mr. Mosser aboutthe youth and to see the joy it brings himwhenever he is able to help us out. It ispeople like Mr. Mosser who truly make adifference in our lives and help us to be-come all that we can be.Kathryn Head has also received Mosser

Scholarship funding more than one time, and she is also a veterinary student atTexas A&M University College of Veteri-nary Medicine. Vet school, she says, is ex-

tremely expensive. Many studentsgraduate with $100,000 in debt orworse. It is my goal to not be oneof those students. Without the gen-erosity and support of my Long-horn family, I would not be able toobtain this goal. I am forever grate-ful for the help I have been givenby Rex Mosser and all the breederswho have ever donated to thescholarship fund. I hope one day Iam able to continue the traditionand help students fund their edu-cation.Sarah Galloway reports that the Mosser

family scholarship allowed her to get a college education withoutbeing in severe debt as a new graduate.I applied the scholarship to my yearly tuition, she said. With

the graciousness of the Mosser family I was able to receive a collegeeducation, without the burden of wondering how my mother wasgoing to put my sister and me both through college at the sametime. I graduated from Tarleton State University in May with an Agri-culture Services and Development Degree. Since graduation I haveaccepted my first teaching position at Ferris High School.I would like to thank the Mosser Family, Zech Dameron, and

others who have made this scholarship possible. Two years ago atthe Legacy Sale I made Mr. Mosser a promise, a promise to "Pay itforward" and give back to the program and to future youth so thatthey may achieve their dreams just as I was able.

NEIGHBORSWithout knowing their neighbor at all, Doug and Sandy Stotts

bought some raw land just down the road from Rex Mossers ranchat Midway, Texas. When we first bought our property, Doug said, he came over

and helped us build our corral, and it wasnt from me asking hejust volunteered. Whenever we had the opportunity, wed all get to-gether for lunch or dinner. Rex and Nora are just super people. Westill get over there as often as we can and they come over here on aregular basis, just checking to see how we are doing, offering goodadvice.

At first, Doug offered, we werentsure what kind of animals we wanted tobuy. We visited with several, but after wemet Rex, discovered Longhorns and theease of maintenance ---Rex made it kind of exciting for us, in-

terjected Sandy. We kind of thought thatwas the route we wanted to take butwerent positive, but when we visited withRex and saw his animals, we just fell inlove with them.As an example of his generosity, con-

tinued Sandy, we bought several cowsfrom him and we didnt own a bull at thattime and Doug kept wanting to get one.Rex told him he didnt need one; that wedidnt have enough cows to need a bull.He said to just bring our cows and putthem in the pasture, to pick whatever bullwe wanted. And he never charged us.We were rookies getting in the business

back then, said Doug. He has been verykind and considerate and has been just agodsend for us.We went with Rex and Nora on their

very first date, said Sandy. We went outto dinner. She is a wonderful per-sonI love her and they are per-fect for each other.

Im looking forward to visit-ing them in their beautiful water-front home, said Doug. Iveseen the pictures. Once they getthat thing finished, I will be goingthere to harass them.

Mossers ranch at Midway hasbeen the site of a Horn Showcasesatellite horn measuring severalyears, including the one this yearscheduled for October 5.

We are going to miss him in the Long-horn business, said Doug, but I bet he

will still go to some of the Longhorn events, visit with some of hisLonghorn friends.

ABSOLUTE AUCTIONMossers outstanding herd of top quality Texas Longhorns will sell

at absolute auction August 17 at Marquess Arrow Ranch, BenWheeler, Texas. Ron Marquess, who is managing the sale and willserve as auctioneer, explains that absolute means there are no re-serves and that every animal will absolutely sell to the highest bid-der.Rex Mosser became interested in the potential to expand the num-

ber of superior individuals through cloning, an exciting new toolthen being aggressively championed by Zech Dameron and RonMarquess. This intense interest led to hours of conversation. We were at different functions, said Marquess, and got together

discussing cattle and thats how we became partners on buying bet-ter cattle and trying to improve the genetics in local herds. That ledto Rex and I traveling all over the United States many times, look-ing at cattle and buying cattle. You know, on a long road trip, you do a lot of talking, especially

if you are driving, and we did a lot of those.Rex Mosser has built a herd of really top cattle, observed Mar-

quess. When he went to Red McCombs sale and bought DaysFeisty Fannie, that got him started in investing in the cattle industryand trying to find the nicer cattle with the genetics that are in moredemand.

When I was about 7 years old, the Green Bay Packers and the DenverBroncos met at the Super Bowl. I didnt have a favorite sports team atthe time. My best friend Clayton was a Packers fan, so I jumped on thatband wagon. I also had just started out my days showing cattle throughthe TLBT, and we had traveled to several shows with Lavern Pfeiffer. He and I entered into a debate around the dinner table one evening aboutthe upcoming Super Bowl and our picks. In all my knowledge, I confi-

dently told him how the Packers were obviously the better team, and Brett Farve was better than John Elway. After a bit of time, a bet was struck up and terms made. The deal was if the Packers won,Lavern would owe me a Brett Farve jersey. If the Broncos won, I would have to washLaverns cattle at the next show. Lo and behold Lavern showed up at the next springshow with about 15 calves, and I learned the way of making a white calf clean for theshow ring. I definitely learned some lessons from that experience. For example, dontmake bets with a savvy cattleman from East Nebraska.I also learned the value of the atmosphere the Texas Longhorn breed brings to the table.

You see, I wasnt concerned about washing Laverns 15 calves while worrying that mydad had hauled a trailer load of our own to the show that needed washing. I was so wrappedup in being happy that I was at a cow show doing what we loved to do, with people that weenjoyed being around and that is what made the weekend memorable. TLBAA events al-ways carry that air about them, friends reuniting around the breed that we all love. In June, the 26th Annual TLBAA World Show had that same vibe. The spirit of cooperation was def-initely shown at the Awards Banquet that was graciously hosted by John and Diann Chase, withthe Autobahn Scholarship Tour. We are certainly grateful for all the John and Diann have done for the youth ofthis breed. And in October, when you attend the TLBAA Horn Showcase and Sale, youll experience the samewith breeders and organizations all meeting together to celebrate this wonderful breed. For all of its history, theTexas Longhorn breed has always carried a buzz of excitement around it. No pun intended, but that is the na-ture of the beast. This fall, October 9th 13th, youll have the chance to attend the measuring event of the year. The

TLBAA Horn Showcase is coming right around the corner! You wont want to miss this grand event.Youll have the chance to see many of the industrys top animals in person and a chance to buy a few ofthem too. Bull Alley is returning for its second year in a row. Youll be able to browse through severalTLBAA A.I. certified bulls in person and buy some semen to stock your tanks up. This is also a great wayfor you to market your A.I. herd sire! The Horn Showcase is also introducing our first Horn ShowcaseNon-Haltered show with a 75% cash payout. If you are interested in taking part in any of these options atHorn Showcase, the entry deadline is September 3rd in office. Dont miss out! The weekend will wrap upwith the Horn Showcase Sale which is starting to promise great things. There are several over 70 femalesconsigned thanks to our consignors! Watch for your sale catalog in an upcoming issue of your award win-ning TrailsMagazine. For more information on the Horn Showcase please go to page 41.Aside from working on wrapping up World Show and preparing for the upcoming Horn Showcase, I attended

the Sunrise Showmanship Camp for a day, put on by long time TLBAA members John T. and Betty Baker.Several of your TLBT members attended and gained several life lessons, virtues with a few show stick trickson the side. Im always glad to see people like the Bakers who continually invest in the youth. Im sure the kidsthat attended are eager for the upcoming show season to kick off so they can put their newly acquired skills tothe test.If you look at the bottom of this page youll see an ad for Schumacher Cattle. They are the sponsors of the new

Events Update page. The Schumachers are a great couple, and your seminar chairs for the TLBAA Horn Show-case. They will do a great job, and we cant wait to meet their expected ranch hand this fall. Thanks and con-gratulations Scott and Stacey! Until next time, have fun planning to attend your next TLBAA event and watchout for poor planned bets with cattlemen from Nebraska.

When it comes to talking about Longhorns, everyone has a story to tell. It might be about thattime they bought their first Longhorn. It might bethat time they sold one for big money. Might beabout that calf they had to carry on their lap in thetruck driving home from a sale. We all see those

big name super star Longhorns in the magazines, butdo we ever really know the stories behind them? Well, this is a lookback at some of the most influential, wellknown, and longest horned cows of theMagnificent 7 era. For this issue we are goingto take a closer look at Y O SAMSON JOSE-FINA 706.

Y O SAMSON JOSEFINA 706 seemeddestined for greatness from the time she wasweaned. Like many great stories, this onestarts in the pen full anonymous calves thathave made it past the first cut. Alan Spargerwould be on the hunt for a couple of cows toadd to his 3S Ranch. After making the longdrive down the Y.O. Ranch entrance hewould end up looking through the replace-ment heifers for a couple of new additions. The ranch manager at the time didnt haveany of the regular sale heifers available. Ap-parently Alan was a good enough customerthat the manager didnt mind showing himsome of the better stuff. Alan picked out twoheifers from the rather large group. The first was Y O Samson An-tonia 702, a nice red roan heifer. The second heifer was not Y OSamson Josefina 706. Thankfully on that day the ranch managertold Alan that he really needed to look at this other heifer in thepen. One he thought was the best of the group. Upon a closer look,Alan agreed that the heifer the manager picked was better than thesecond one he had picked for himself. Y O Samson Josefina 706would start her journey with Alan that would see her rise to the topof the breed. One might ask, what did those two heifers cost? Alanmust have learned a few tricks from Darol Dickinson, because hewould take those two heifers home in trade for three Bowie knives!Needless to say Charlie Schreiner IV would joke with Alan over re-placement heifers for many years after that deal.

Of the 31 registered progeny for Y O Samson Josefina 706(nickname: Favorite), 16 of them would carry Alans prefix 3S intheir name. While many of the bulls would not make the grade andeventually get culled, a few would go on tocarry on the legacy. 3S Classic Favorite (siredby Classic) was one of his favorite bulls thathe never got to use. He had flat lateral hornsin a time when the only other bull that hadhorns like that was his sire Classic. Mostbulls at that time had horns that went for-ward and then up. If you had to ask howgood this bull was, the new owner mightgive you an idea, because Betty Lamb would

buy 3S Classic Favorite to help boost herprogram to the legend we know today. When talking about legendary bulls and theowners that used them, 3S 49 a big brindleand white bull out of Hondo would go onto be used by Darol Dickinson. 3S 49 canstill be found in many pedigrees today ofhigh selling cash cows for the wild brindlecolor and thick clean conformation hepassed onto his progeny.

Seven of the 31 progeny would be siredby Texas Ranger JP, which would be impressive, if Classic had notbeen the sire of 14 of the remaining progeny. One of those wouldbecome the most prolific and influential producers of all thedaughters. On April 23, 1983 a heifer would be born named 3S Fa-vorite Beauty. Of 12 registered progeny all but three were female.Three would be sired by Watson 83, six by Phenomenon, and oneby Tri-W Broken Arrow. Today living a pampered life in Michigan,RB Favorite Queen (Phenomenon x 3S Favorite Beauty) measures73 1/4 tip to tip and within a few inches of 100 total horn isowned by Dick and Peg Lowe. Her 14 registered progeny are siredby some of the greatest bulls in the industry like Watson 83, Star-liner, Wyoming Warpaint, Olympic Torch and WS Amazon. An ad-ditional eight will soon add to that list under the Triple R Ranchbrand sired by JP Rio Grande, WS Jamakizm and Tejas Star. Dickand Peg do have a favorite of their own. RRR Miss Estrella 092 outof Tejas Star looks just like her dam and if she is anything like her

  • That bull he ended up raising, Feisty Lee Jr., a double-bred FeistyFannie he sired a tremendous number of good animals all over thecountry and from that Rex went one step further and raised theGene Lee bull a young bull with over 80 inches of horn. Both ofthose bulls are multiple bronze winners and both will be in the salein August.Gene Lee is by Feisty Lee Jr and out of LLL Gunsmokes Tizzy, by

Gun Smoke. The Tizzy cow is an over-eighty inch cow and GunSmoke was one of the first 70 bulls, and of course, Feisty Lee Jr isdouble-bred Feisty Fannie.Hes got a good set of cattle young cattle. The oldest individual

in the sale is Working Woman, and she would be a highlight in anyoffering. There will be several granddaughters of Emperor, daughtersand granddaughters of Phenomenon and other sought-after siressuch as Dinger, Coach, Starliner, DH Red Ranger, ZD Kelly, Awe-some Viagra, Totem Pole and BL Rodeo Chex.He was an entrepreneur of good genetics, and he bred them all

to see how they would reproduce. Of course, he has been sellingcattle all along at all the sales. He Lives Without Regret. Thats one of Rexs favorite quotes. He

doesnt want to regret doing something wrong and he doesnt wantto regret not doing something right, saying something he shouldnot have said or not saying something he should have.He has been a good partner for me, but he is a close friend and

always will be.Ron has grown to be one of my very, very best friends, observed

Mosser. I would trust Ron with my check book, and I would prob-ably come out ahead because if there was a question, he would payit out of his instead of paying it out of mine if he wasnt sure aboutit. He is just that honest and just that good of a person.

A NEW CHAPTERNone of Rexs children are interested in ranching, so everybody

supports the decision to retire. Im 74 years old, said Rex, Ill be75 December first. The ranching business is long hours, its hardwork, its dirty, its hot, its cold, its wet, its dry its a little bit ofeverything. There are no holidays or vaca-tions if the cows go through the fenceon Christmas day, you get the cows in andyou fix the fence. The pay is low and thereare not many benefits except the enjoy-ment of it.Its time for Nora and me to start a new

chapter in our lives. I tell people all thetime, my life is just like the Bible youstart a chapter and you write a bunch ofverses in it, then all of a sudden, there is achange in your life, so thats the end ofthat chapter and you start another andyou write a bunch of verses; some arelong, some are short. Some chapters havea few verses; some have a lot of verses. ButNoras and my life started and were start-ing a new chapter in our lives and thisnew chapter is Rex and Nora and it willbe something new for both of us.Both of us want to live on the seacoast,

build a new house thats ours not mine, not hers we want things together, wewant to have our stuff, not his and nothers. We are looking forward to our place,so were going down to Ingleside andbuilding a brand new waterfront home. We have Corpus Christi Bay in the

front, a little inlet in the back, so we havewater in front of the house, water in the

back of the house and a boat slip underneath the house. We tore the old house down, and we are building a new one. The

new one is about 2800 square feet. We are going to get off the boat, push a button, pick the boat up, we will be underneath the housewhen we do that, walk over, push a button on the elevator and goup a floor. We will have about 1800 square feet on the floor wherewe are going to live, and we are putting another floor upstairs withtwo bedrooms and a bath and a nice den for family and friends andguests. The main floor is one bedroom and just like a separate housefor us.

A HERITAGE AND A LEGACYI was very lucky as a child, observed Rex, to have someone take

me in and help me get started in life. I think there are a lot of youngpeople out there that need a little help. I never finished high school I went three years and never finished, but I got my GED when Iwas in the Navy. But Ive always believed in helping the young peo-ple. You know, some of them wouldnt get to go to college if theydidnt have help from somewhere. You cant do things now without an education like you could

when I was young. Then we could do just about anything we wantedto; today you cant even fill out an application unless you go on-line. Education is very costly, but hopefully we can help a few youngpeople and they will remember and will help other young peoplelater on in their life, and hopefully it will keep going.Thats a chapter in their lives; when they get out of college, thats

the end of a chapter. When they go to work, thats the beginning ofa new chapter. Then when they work ten years or twenty years, thenat that point, they need to start a new chapter to help others justthat repayment makes you feel good.Paul Mullins, who took me in when I was eight years old and

gave me a home, lives in Ingraham, Illinois. For his 92nd birthday,I took two big steers and gave them to him. Nora and I went and cel-ebrated with him. He and his son and a couple of people that workfor him farm about 2800 acres with corn and beans and wheat andall that stuff.

When he came down for our wedding,he said he needed a couple of Longhornsto look at there at his place, so for hisbirthday, I loaded up two of the best steersI had and took them there. Ron and Bar-bara Marquess joined us and we cele-brated his birthday with about 300 otherpeople. He is really enjoying the big steers he is now a TLBAA member. I got him amembership and registered the steers inhis name, so he is set up and he is a Long-horn member now. There are not many Texas Longhorns

in that part of the central Illinois farmingcommunity, so he has a lot of peoplecome by to look at them. He said onMothers Day, he had eight different fam-ilies come by there to look at them. Thatgives him a lot more company, too.Paul Mullins showed kindness to a

needy young Rex Mosser. In honor andappreciation of that kindness, Rex Mosserpasses it along and is a blessing to hun-dreds through the Mosser Family Memo-rial Scholarships. The recipients of thosescholarships may well show their appreci-ation in turn by helping others, and thelegacy of Paul Mullins through Rex Mossercontinues a cascade of blessings.
