It was only a few years ago that
we took members of Temple Beth
David on a trip to Israel in March
2014. Andrea Tabor has been
asking me to arrange another
Temple trip oversees either to Is-
rael or Europe. We are thinking
of spring 2018 but that really de-
pends on you. Here are some re-
flections on our experience of Israel from a few years ago.
“Every time I go to Israel it is in many ways like going
home, it is welcoming and comfortable to be in the only
country where what we do as Jews is the norm and the
way of life.” Charlie Niederman
“Right as we touched down in Israel I knew I had landed
in a special place when they said “Shabbat Shalom” over
the intercom on the plane. I never heard these words out-
side of temple, a family gathering or camp… I had a feel-
ing that I’ve come home and that I belonged.” Faith Pantel
“It is not too often an event, trip or project comes out bet-
ter than you thought it might. Well our trip to Israel was so
much better than I dreamed it to be. It was like everything
I had learned about or saw pictures of came to life and it
just felt good to be there.” Teri Roth
Are you interested in a congregational trip to Israel or to
Europe? Interest list is forming and trip will be designed
with the dates of those attending. Contact the rabbi with

SISTERHOOD MATTERS!
By Anne Farber, Sisterhood President
SISTERHOOD MATTERS…
I hope everyone had a happy Hanukkah and look forward to a great 2017.
We sent three representatives to the convention in November in Las
Vegas. They came back and shared with us many great ideas, handouts and
available resources.
Sisterhood has been planning many activities for the coming year. Please
mark your calendars and plan to join us for the activities that interest you:
Pechanga Day Trip ---Jan. 31, 2017
Social Action Program – Feb. 5, 2017 (more info to follow)
Hamentashen Baking --- Feb. 26, 2017
Sisterhood Shabbat --- March 10, 2017
Fashion Show --- April 30, 2017
There will be more publicity as the events
approach.
The Sisterhood needs volunteers to work a
few hours a week or a month in the gift shop.
Please call Jackie Hewitt at 714-846-4620 if you
can help.
We are very excited about the remote electric window covering for all of
the social hall windows that Sisterhood was able to purchase. Now, when we
have presentations in the Social Hall, the shinning sun will not be a problem! It
also gives a warmer look in there. Come see.….
Shalom,
Anne Farber, President
SISTERHOOD
January 2017
As 2016 draws to a close we can reflect on what did and
did not happen in 2016 and speculate on what 2017 may
hold in store for Israel.
The agreement for an egalitarian prayer area at the Western
Wall (Kotel) was adopted by the Israeli cabinet at the end
of January. There has been resistance by the ultra-
Orthodox and several ruling coalition members, and there
is no schedule for its implementation. That did not stop
non-Orthodox Jews in Israel and the Diaspora from
continuing to pressure the government and the Reform
movement has held prayer services for men and women at
the undeveloped site. Rabbi Gilad Kariv, the Executive
Director of the Israel Movement for Reform and
Progressive Judaism said "The prayers of hundreds of
people and Reform rabbis at the Western Wall is the
ultimate answer to the incitement of the ultra-Orthodox
leadership... They continue to incite and we continue to
create a more pluralistic and tolerant reality in Israel."
In June diplomatic relations between Turkey and Israel
were renormalized and ambassadors were exchanged in
December. The allies continue to take steps toward a full
restoration of ties, but their improving relationship may be
an acknowledgement of regional reality rather than a
restoration of friendly relations.
In September the world lost a Nobel Peace Prize winner
and Israel lost a past Prime Minister and President, as
Shimon Peres died at the age of 93. His voice and
influence will be missed.
Overall the number of stabbings have decreased as the year
comes to an end, but the relationship between Israelis and
Palestinians does not show signs of improvement.
The 8-day wave of 90 wildfires in November caused an
estimated $520 million in damage. In Haifa 800
apartments were left uninhabitable, making 1,700 people
homeless. The international community was instrumental
in helping combat the fires. Egypt, Jordan, Azerbaijan and
Turkey all sent firefighting equipment to Israel. The
Palestinian Authority also pitched in by sending fire trucks
to Israel, in a moment of Israeli-Palestinian cooperation.
Israeli Public Security Minister said that between 40% and
50% of the fires were the result of arson, and he called it a
new form of Palestinian terrorism.
For Israel's Reform Jews the year has presented some sad
and stark realities. In addition to the government refusing
to implement terms of the Kotel agreement, there has been
a increase in vandalism nationwide and against the Reform
movement and its institutions. In December the Reform
congregation of Ra’anana, a suburb north of Tel Aviv,
suffered vandalism for the fifth time. Sprayed on the wall
was a verse number from the Book of Obadiah that
encourages violence against those deemed heretics. A
knife on an outdoor ledge covered three envelopes with the
names of prominent Reform leaders: Rabbi Rick Jacobs,
president of our Union for Reform Judaism, Rabbi Gilad
Kariv, Executive Director of the IMPJ; and Anat Hoffman,
chair of Women of the Wall, and Executive Director of the
Israel Religious Action Center. On the knife were words
from an ancient text that refers to the Jewish laws
pertaining to murder. Prime Minister Netanyahu, and other
ruling coalition members denounced the attack, but arrests
have yet to be made.
No review of the year can be complete without mentioning
the current US-Israel row. Until last week, President
Obama was the only recent US president to veto rather
than abstain from a Security Council resolution critical of
Israel. There appear to have been 23 abstentions, with
President Reagan's 10 leading the list. All that changed
when the US did abstain from one, which while more
balanced in its wording, was critical of Israel's West Bank
settlements. America’s UN Ambassador, Samantha
Power, spoke eloquently about UN mistreatment of Israel,
and called for an end to “the double-standard that
undermines the legitimacy of the UN.” Her remarks were
intended to explain why America chose to abstain. But
many American Jews, including opponents of the
settlements, pointed to those remarks as reason the US
could have cast a veto.
On Christmas Day Israel's Foreign Minister called the
ambassadors of all the nations that voted for the resolution
to denounce it. Prime Minister Netanyahu personally
called in the American Ambassador. He made public
statements denouncing the resolution and attacking the US
administration in personal terms. This was followed by an
impassioned speech by Secretary of State Kerry that
warned Israel that the settlements were destroying the
chances for a two state solution leaving Israel to choose
between becoming a Jewish or a Democratic state, since
eventually it will not be able to be both. He also felt Israel
could become a pariah state. It all leaves many American
Jews profoundly uncomfortable and wondering if it really
had to happen.
Since the incoming US administration is yet to be formed,
I'll take the easy route and wait until they take office next
month before making any predictions.

HANNUKAH CARNIVAL
Once again I have a lot of people to thank for a successful “potato latke sale”. It’s a lot of work but very rewarding to know that our job is so appreciated. My sincere thanks go to Eileen Tobey, Marlene Wedner, Jim Michaeloff, Jan Klein, Susan Schoenholtz, Alma Herman, Annette Helfman, Elaine Netzer, Sharon (David) Matalon, Mulu Harrison, Mary Treiger and Michelle Markell . There is no way this could have been done without the help of ALL of these people. It really does take a “village” to do this. A special thank you to Scott for picking up the potatoes and onions from Frieda’s and schlepping them to the temple and doing anything we ask for the mere payment of a latke!!! And he had to do this on his birthday!!! Thank you to those who came in the kitchen to offer their help. If you want to help me next year, please respond to the request so I can schedule you. Once again, I would like to thank Frieda Caplan, Karen Caplan and Jackie Wig-gins for their generous donation of the potatoes and onions. They are always there for us and we sincerely appreciate their generosity. I wish you all a very Happy Hannukah.

“Religion in American Politics”
Tuesdays
January 10th, 17th, and 24th
Starts at 10:30am to 12:00pm
During this 3 session course we will look at the interplay between religion
and American political life. With the inauguration of the new president this
class will be especially timely. How did various religious communities vote
and what influence do religious leaders exert on our political life? Christians,
Jews and Muslims have been part of the American story since the beginning
and over the years have has huge impact on politics. We will start with an
historical review and focus most closely on the contemporary situation.
Cost: $25, checks made out to
Rabbi Michael Mayersohn at the first session
Any questions please contact
Irma Moskowitz at [email protected]

music, playing with her friends,
teasing her siblings, or making those around her laugh. Her
bubbly personality and big heart are truly a blessing. Jessa
worked with a friend to complete her mitzvah project,
where she made grave markers for the past pets at Seal
Beach Animal Care Center.

To Our Temple Beth David Family:
As most of you are aware, our Temple depends on donations to deliver the high quality of
services to all of you. We understand that many of you are still struggling with the recent
economic downturn. However, we have come up with a way that will allow you to donate to
the Temple without spending a penny of your own money, plus you will actually save money
on many purchases that you normally make!
We would like to introduce you to Goodshop and Goodsearch. Goodshop works with more
than 5,000 stores that will provide all of you with discounts on what you normally buy and then
will donate up to 20% of the purchase price to the Temple. You will simply click on a link on
the Temple Home Page, start saving money for your family and help the Temple out as
well! We have included an easy step-by-step signup guide with this letter. Here are some
examples of companies that participate in the program:
Target, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Sears, Sak’s, Apple, Old Navy, the Gap, Amazon,
Office Depot, Petco, Staples, Dell, The Limited, Holiday Inn, Groupon, Levi’s, Lands End,
Best Buy, 1-800 Flowers, 24 Hour Fitness, and Victoria’s Secret.
These are companies that we all normally shop at, and by simply clicking on the link on the
Temple website, you will be saving money for your family and actually raising money for the
Temple. In addition, you can also save money by dining out at participating restaurants and, at
the same time, raising donations for the Temple as well. It’s simple, free and easy to use, and
the average family using the site over a year will actually raise more than $350 annually for the
Temple. Multiply that by our 300 families and we will raise more than $100,000 per year for
the Temple! This program really works. Goodshop has raised more than $11 million for
charitable organizations with this program.
Likewise, we are also rolling out Goodsearch. By doing your internet searches through
Goodsearch.com, which links with Yahoo, the Temple will receive a penny for every internet
search. If you can imagine how many internet searches you do, and your families do, this will
also add up to real money for the Temple.
We encourage all of you to participate and to help strengthen our Temple for all of us and for
the generations to come.
With best regards,
Neil Kornswiet Eric Schiffer Nancy Meyers
