‘blackbirds’,‘wrens’and‘grossbeaks’collectedattheGalapagosareactuallyallspeciesoffinches.Hebeginstodeveloptheoriesforhownewspeciescomeintoexistence.

1838 Charlesdevelopstheideathatnaturalselectionisnotinfluencedbydivineinterventionbut,duetoaconcernforhisreputationandthefeelingsofhisfuturewife,EmmaWedgewood,decidestokeepthistohimself.

1857 CharlessendsashortversionofhistheoryofnaturalselectiontoAsaGray,professorofNaturalHistoryatHarvardUniversity.HerepliestoaletterfromAlfredWallacestatingthathehasbeenworkingontheproblemofspeciesoriginsfortwentyyears,butisnotreadytopublish.

1858 CharlesreceivesapaperfromAlfredWallaceontheoriginofspecies.Itisverysimilartothetheoryhehasbeenworkingonforovertwentyyears.HissonCharlesdies.Toamixedreactionofshock,excitementandstunnedsilence,Darwin’sandWallace’spapersonthemeansofnaturalselectionarereadatameetingoftheLinneanSocietyinLondon.
