OPTIFEED Technology The OPTIFEED TECHNOLOGY developed in collaboration with the University of Thessaly, Greece, i s b a s e d o n t h e i n v i t r o d e t e r m i n a t i o n o f P r o t e i n Digestibility Rates using the pH-s t a t m e t h o d , a m e t h o d o f cont inuous measurement o f peptide bond cleavage. The pH-Stat method was originally developed and used by the human food industry (1983). Since then, the method has been occasionally used in fish nutrition studies.

OPTIFEED Technology exploits the full potential of pH-stat methodology utilizing crude digestive enzyme extracts isolated from different species and life stages.

OPTIFEED Technology allows the simulation of the conditions prevailing in the digestive tract and is adjustable to evaluate all factors known to affect protein digestibility.

OPTIFEED Technology culminates years of research on the variation of digestive potential of different fish species and life stages and of validation of results with studies in vivo to allow effective and fast benchmarking of: • Raw materials screening & selection for fish feed manufacture • Larval feeds for early- and post-weaning • On-growing feeds

OPTIFEED Technology offers the capacity to compare the digestive potential and predict growth performance of: • Larvae batches at all developmental stages • Juveniles purchased by different hatcheries • Fish raised on different diets and environments

OPTIFEED Technology is an innovative tool that can be applied to all stages and sectors of fish production and can amplify the production potential of hatcheries, cage fish farms and fish feed companies, improving quality of the final product in a cost effective manner.

The OPTIFEED concept

Fish Nutrition research to date utilizes traditional methodologies to develop new fish feeds in a very volatile environment, where quality and price of raw materials is changing continuously.

In recent years, the trend to utilize increasing amounts of plant proteins in fish feeds gave significant new insights into the tolerance of different species to maximum levels of incorporation, yet the fish farming industry suffered in terms of slowing performance and in compromising final product composition and organoleptic characteristics.

Across the globe, several research teams are working on nutritional requirements of various local species; they develop prototypes and assist companies to formulate novel fish diets based on the various raw materials available locally. Salmonid diets have been used as the basis for the development of all the other marine and freshwater omnivorous and carnivorous fish diets, but in the last 20 years significant expertise has been built locally in countries with fast growing fish farming industries.

Not all proteins are alike

It is well documented that fish fed on two different iso-proteinous feeds will perform differently and one feed will outperform the other. The explanation lies in the quality of dietary protein used n the formulation. Ultimately, the digestibility and availability of the dietary protein is higher in the high-performing feed.

OPTIFEED benchmarks selection of Raw Materials Selection is based on ACTUAL BIOLOGICAL QUALITY since we select raw materials based on their digestibility. The process is based on fast in vitro testing and contributes significantly to cost management by optimising feed formulation according to dietary protein bioavailability and avoiding excess use of expensive protein.

BENEFITS • Permits better formulated (blend) ingredients to achieve target feed specifications • Option to base choice on performance and not only on cash flow (actual digestible protein content) • Proactive sourcing of high performance materials • Strategic advantage vs competitors • Avoid impact from quality fall out between batches • Improved negotiating power • Better quality assurance of feeds • Better accuracy to predict fish performance • Most importantly, save money avoid giving away protein exceeding feed specs.

OPTIFEED improves fish feed formulation Our approach provides a solid prediction of feed performance. Detailed formulation is based on the digestibility of each feed for each different species and each specific life stage at any given rearing temperature.

Determination of the actual impact of the anti-nutritional factors present in each ingredient and feed for each different species and each specific life stage.

BENEFITS • Faster product development based on reliable in vitro testing • Benchmarking of prototype feeds versus the competition • Evaluation of performance under variable conditions before feeding the fish • Base choice on performance as well as on cost • Customisation of feeds on nutritional requirements (species, stage, period) • Targeted informed marketing of feeds (species, stage, period..) vs uninformed competition • Reduction of product recalls • Reduction of customer complains • Increase market share (feed sales) • Improved brand awareness • Improved relation with customers through sharing of in vitro performance data that are confirmed by in vivo data

OPTIFEED is critical for the formulation of specialised feeds for more than 60 major cultured species

By 2050 aquaculture production would need to rise to some 130 to 180 million tonnes annually / two to three times the present output. Aquaculture is now estimated to produce more than 600 food fish and algal species in more than 190 countries.

OPTIFEED Technology offers a range of services

TETHYS AQUACULTURE’s OPTIFEED TECHNOLOGY is a UNIQUE versatile, applied, reliable, in vitro testing technology that simulates the conditions in the fish gut. It provides a platform for benchmarking of the feed

components as ingredients or formulated feeds by estimating the actual biological impact of these ingredients in terms of protein digestibility and inhibitory action of their antinutritional factors on the activities of Trypsin and Chymotrypsin. Through detailed quantified curves and models we can estimate the performance of the feed components in terms of auto hydrolysis and enzymatic hydrolysis and their bio-availability in the gut of the fish without using live fish or waiting for months

with classic digestibility trials.

TETHYS AQUACULTURE Ltd is a strategic and applied research accelerator in Aquatic Animal Health and Nutrition. TETHYS AQUACULTURE revolutionises fish health, fish feeding and nutr i t ion management through innovative applied research and benchmarking tools, contributing to the optimisation of the global aquaculture industry to achieve the ”blue revolution” required for future global food security. We generate new knowledge, translate research into comprehensive and innovative solutions and we maximize research impact to the development of the global aquaculture industry.

Prerequisites for “sustainable aquaculture growth”

An additional 100 million tones of Aquaculture output would require more than 50 million tones of extra fish or a significant optimisation in terms of benchmarking and utilisation of protein sources in fish feed management.

We launch in collaboration with University of Thessaly, Greece OPTIFEED Technology that revolutionises Fish Feed Development as we know it.
