the first test software to think as it works

testXpert® – The universal test software, flexible and ergonomic

3

testXpert® – What’s that?testXpert® is the universal test softwarefor materials, components and functionstesting. It’s applicational range goesfrom Zwick materials testing machines(tensile, compression, flexure and uni-versal testing machines) to hardnessmaschinentesters, pendulum impacttesters, extrusion plastometers, automa-tic test systems, etc. right up to moder-nising of test machines in a variety ofmakes and models.

Duties and functionstestXpert® controls and monitors:* verification and re-equipping the test

machine* preparation of the test or test series* carrying out the test* evaluation and documentation* data management, and * quality management

testXpert® supports the user for all taskswith software wizards and editors, explanatory pictures and video sequen-ces, situation specific user tips, war-nings, error messages and online help.

Software designtestXpert® has been designed objectorientated in the programming languageVisual C++ under operating systemsWindows 95 and NT to meet with therequirements of current and future direc-tions of computer sciences. Thus usingthe performance capabilities of these32-Bit operating systems to an optimum.

This is also valid for data exchangebetween testXpert® and other user soft-ware for these operating systems, suchas Microsoft Excel, Word and Access.

Hardware requirementstestXpert® runs on all trade PCs.A special interface is not required forconnection of a PC to a Zwick testmachine. testXpert® is supplied with aconnection cable that is plugged into thePC’s serial interface. The connectingcable’s plug contains an integratedelectronics unit that guarantees rapidsignal transfer free of interference. As nointervention whatsoever with the PC isnecessary at standard installation, theCE conformity remains unchallenged.

testXpert® – the first test software to think as it works

From mechanics to softwareThe mechanics determined the scope ofperformance and function of test machi-nes for many years by loading specimenand displaying the test data. Everythingelse, from preparation of the test via themachine control to determination ofresults, was the operator’s task.

Although the analogue measurementand performance electronics of the 70iesimproved the possibilities of testsequence control and test data recor-ding, it also brought with it additionaltasks for the operator. They He/she hadto* make all settings* control and monitor the test sequence* evaluate the recorded curves, or con-

vert the saved maximum value, and* transfer the evaluations to the test

report.

The increasing use of high performanceand low price computer systems in the80ies increased the possibilities for theentire all test systems. The scope ofperformance and function increasedconsiderably. This created the require-ment for increased flexibility but, at thesame timesimultaneously, being simpleto use.

The Zwick solution - testXpert®

Zwick reacted quickly inplenty of timewith respect to this challenge and inve-sted approximately 100 man-years in thedevelopment of an absolutely new testsoftware. testXpert®, successfully in usesince mid-1996 * solves the conflict between maximum

flexibility and most simple usability.* replaces the numerous operating and

control elements of earlier systemswith a keyboard and screen

* accepts a number of additional func-tions, especially those where datashould be saved, processed anddisplayed in different manners

* saves predefined sequences andsettings, and runs them as often asyou want and, at the same time, highlyreproducible

* considerably increases the perfor-mance of the test machine and itscomponents through optimum use oftheir technical-physical capabilities

* documents the entire test inclusive ofthe respective test conditions, and

* fulfills the requirements of ISO 9000ffand other quality standards, such asGMP, etc.

* creates new quality in materials testing

From operator to userIn the past the user was little more thanthe test machine’s servant. They had to transpose the test job to machinesettings, control and monitor the testsequence, and determine the test resultsfrom the displayed test data.testXpert® makes them a true user of the machine. testXpert® takes over all”servant” functions. And with quickreactions, tirelessly and reproducible. The user only transfers the test job totestXpert®, starts the test and receivesthe test results in the required form.Where necessary, testXpert® providessupport in the form of saved expertknowledge and help functions. The user is relieved of ever repeatingand tiring tasks. They can concentrateon their testing tasks, and distributionand evaluation of test results.

Modern test software considerably increasesperformance and scope of function of testmachines.

The testXpert® test software is used for different types of test machines. It also communicates with peripheral measurement devices and other computer systems.

Development in test machine manufacture depicts the transition of mechanical to software dominance. However, only the combination of precision mechanics, powerful electronics and intelligent software acting together brings an optimum of performance and flexibility.

Software toolsThe software tools (wizards, editors, macro language) support the user in avariety of ways * at adjusting test programs to the

respective test tasks* at layout of the desktop and protocols* at management of test series with

subseries and test data* at compilation of statistics and

analyses, and * at archiving.

International quality standardsIf a software product is to comply withinternational quality standards, each andevery version must be transparent andarchived for 10 years. The testXpert® testsoftware fulfils these requirements andtestXpert® also enables quality manage-ment to international standards such asISO 9000, the guidelines of the Food &Drugs Administration (FDA, USA) andGood Manufacturing Practise (GMP)etc., and makes their processes certifia-ble.The entire testXpert® test software deve-lopment process and its components arediligently documented and archived, from the source code, through to thesoftware tools used for each and every

version. This is valid for each phase, from analysis, through specification, design and implementation, and up tothe test. Conformity to the standard DIN EN ISO9000-3 for development of testXpert®

has been confirmed via audit report no.QM-F-96/1016.The Zwick quality management was cer-tified for the first time in 1993 to DIN ENISO 9001.

Simplest operation Operation is reduced to one-button ope-ration, i.e.activating the start button, forstandard applications. This is possiblebecause testXpert® – the first test soft-ware to think as it works – automaticallyrecords the test data, and using thisinformation, controls and monitors thetest sequence, and determines anddocuments the test results.

Multimedial testingtestXpert® supports the user not onlywith ”help” videos. It can perform multi-medial tests for the first time. Visual andacoustic information from the test arran-gement and test sequence is recordedand digitally saved synchronously to therespective measured values via acamera (every day or special industrialvideo camera). This catapults test eva-luation into a new dimension that is sosignificant that it has its own chapter inthis publication (page 13).

Test standards – Expert systemThis data base integrated in testXpert®

allows the user to find the test programthat they want, quickly and easily.Regardless of whether their search crite-ria used is the material to be tested, thetype of test or a test standard.

Safety in detail:Windows software is normally used inoffices. However, testXpert® takes overan additional and especially critical task:monitoring and controlling machines.Machine damage and potential dangerto persons must be ruled out. That’s whytestXpert® doesn’t use any overlappingwindows in the test mode to avoidhiding important displays or key fields.

4

Future orientated conceptThe testXpert® test software uses theadvantages of the object orientated pro-gramming with respect to a clear grou-ping in tasks and functions. Structureand contents are determined by theZwick applications and software know-how. The concept is therefore a guaran-tee for highest flexibility, functionalsafety as well as simple usability.testXpert® is distinguished through:* uniform basis software for all

applications* modular system for test programs * user support through software tools.

Uniform basis softwaretestXpert works with a single and uni-form basis software for all applications. The software takes over the data, userand test program management, as wellas the communication with the testmachine and other peripheral systems. The advantage of this solution is thatupdating, refreshing, etc. of differentprogram packages, which is prone toerrors, is reduced to a bare minimum.

Modular systemThe test programs are compiled byZwick from a selection of several hun-dred software modules. The modules aresub-divided into classes such as testparameters, test sequence phases, etc. They are continuously actualised andexpanded with respect to new states ofknowledge and any necessary supple-mentations. This makes testXpert® anintelligent software, and thus enablesrealisation of not only test programsstrictly to test standards but also testprograms related to practical applicati-ons. Thanks to the numerous possibili-ties of this system, testXpert® can be put to universal use for a wide applica-tional spectrum and for a variety of testmachines.

Guaranteed reliability Test programsThe test programs compiled by Zwickstipulate how tests are to be run. Theirbase is selected software moduleswhich are linked to one another and arepre-configured through fixed para-meters, depending upon the functionsrequired of them. Thus the user receivesa ”test template” from Zwick in which

they only have to enter variable para-meters. The potential for user errors isdrastically reduced, the preparatorywork done by Zwick is a guarantee forhighest reliability. There are three variations available for awide range of requirements: * Master test programs* Standard test programs, and* Customised test programsThey are selected to the followingcriteria:

Master test programsCover a certain category of tests. Theyare predestined for tests which changefrequently or for complex tests. The fol-lowing can be done with little extra workor previous knowledge, and with thehelp of software wizards* test programs can be compiled and

edited* desktop layouts can be customised,

and * task specific test reports (protocols)

can be compiledIntelligent software wizards guide youquickly and decisively through all menus, and carry out consistency tests simul-taneously.

Standard test programs Are optimal for standardised testing oflarge series with constant test require-ments. They are* intuitive, and can be used with only

a few entries* tailor made for the respective appli-

cation, and* orientated to everyday use, and* value for money

Customised test programsAre individual solutions for special testtasks, the functions and sequences ofwhich are specified by the user. Thereare two possibilities for creating them.* Zwick supplies the suitable master test

program, and the user compiles theirown customised test programs withthe help of a software wizard.

* Zwick compiles these customised testprograms to the user’s specificationand order.

Master test programs consist of selected software modules which are linked together and pre-configuredby fixed parameters, depending on the test category required. Only variable parameters must be enteredor changed to perform a test. Tailor-made standard test programs for standardised tests, and customisedtest programs for individual tests are derived from master test programs.

The testXpert® test software fulfills the highestinternational quality standards. This is true of theend product, as well as for the entire process ofproduct development.

The testXpert®-desktop is split into windows, lines and bars to the ”Windows standard”. All displays, button and input fields necessary for a test or a test series can be shown on one screen page.

A master test program covers a wholecategory of similar (test standard) tests.Standard test programs are generatedfrom the master test program accordingto the relevant test standards. For exam-ple, we currently have 35 standard testprograms derived from the ”Generalcompression and flexure test” mastertest program. These derived programsare related to single national and inter-national standards in this category oftest. Zwick’s target is to illustrate allcommon test standards in standard test programs.

Master test programs can also be usedfor compiling customised test programsto enable individual tests such as acompany’s own test standards to becarried out.

A master test program is the completesolution and offers the followingproperties in addition to being able togenerate standard and customised testprograms:

* Wizards for:- export interfaces- data base linking- protocol compilation- creating measurement and formula

channels- additional evaluations

* Graphical protocol editor for freestyling of the protocol layout

* test series management* comprehensive statistics functions* individual adjustment of the test pro-

grams up to ”One-button operation”

6

The optimum desktop layout can be customisedfor each application. The respective layouts aresaved and can be called-up at any time.

testXpert® – Employ master test programs to utilise the latitude around the test

A master test program offers the advantageof being able to compile standard orcustomised test programs from a basis ofthoroughly tried and tested softwaremodules quickly and reliably.

All parameter groups are shown in listfield ”Overview”. The groups alreadyedited are marked with a ”check”symbol.

Type and units of parameters are selected from preselectedvariations.

A software wizard supports input or selection of parameters for master or customised test programs. Whereby the user is led step by step through a series of dialogue fields which are only for the respective applications.

Standard test programs are the answerfor tests to test standards which arefrequently carried out in large series andwith few changing requirements. Youcan enter the test directly without anyeffort of your own.

Standard test programs * guides the operator through all prepa-

ratory stages up to the start of test* shows the entered organisations data

(job no., type of material, etc.), andsingle data inputs of a specimen

* allows data input for the next test* shows the determined values after the

test

The parameters for standard test programs areentered or selected via register dialogue fields.

The standard test programs reduce the test machine operation to one button operation. The screen masks are prepared so that all important settings and results can be seen at a glance.

testXpert® –Standard test programs for testing quickly and without much effort

Further advantages of standard testprograms are:* Simplest operation

- machine control via one buttonoperation

- rapid and intuitive handling- ideal for PC beginners

* Clear overview of displays- clear and easily legible information

(even from a distance) on the runningforce, travel and time values

- automatic scaling- large display for fatigue free working

* Clear menus contain all requiredpreselection and result parameters

* Two screen layouts for switchingbetween- series layout with series graphics,

statistics table, results table andinformation on the series

- test layout with single graphics andgraphical marking of the results

* Prepared standard protocol containsgraphics, test results and valuableadditional information

* Online help on the respective testsequence can be activated at any time

9

One button operation and automatictest sequenceUsually only two actions, except for spe-cimen feed and removal, are required fora test: * enter the individual specimen data

(e.g. cross-sectional area data).* start the test

The test itself, controlled and monitoredby testXpert®, runs entirely automatically.Should settings deviate from preselec-tions, should safety limit values or timelimits be reached, or should user actionsbe necessary, the start is denied or abor-ted. A warning or error message, or auser remark is then generated.

Optimum user informationAll displays necessary for carrying out atest and a test series, can be groupedtogether in a clear and concise mannerin one single screen setting. See below* input fields for specimen specific test

parameters * curve diagram (single or multiple

curves)* tables for test results* tables for result statistics

The main window can be swapped foradded informationA test’s data can be displayed and dis-tributed on several main window pages(see table on page 9). You can evenswap windows while a test is in pro-gress. This offers advantages, especiallyfor research and training, as the sametest can be observed from differentviewpoints, so it can be analysed to anoptimum.

Efficient specimen management witha powerful series managementThe specimen list at the left hand edgeof each main window shows the currentstatus of the test graphically. The test, the data of which is displayed and/orshould be entered, is selected at theclick of a mouse. The icons indicatingthe status can be indexed with a runningnumber, a selected test parameter or atest result. A test series can be interrup-ted at any time and can be recommen-ced at a later moment in time, or it canbe expanded. A test’s data can be dele-ted entirely, or for evaluation only andcan be reactivated as required.

8

Perform tests –precise, exactly reproducible and highly informative with testXpert®

Test data and diagramsThe main window’s display can be changedbefore, during and after the test so that- test data from another display,

or another test can bedisplayed, or

- so that data for following tests can be entered.

Test data displayThe measurement quantities which are of impor-tance to the user during the test, usually differ tothose outside of the test. So, the measurementquantities which should be shown can be selec-ted. Switching over occurs automatically at thestart and end of each test.

Automatic acceptance of system dataDifferent test tasks require different testmachines with different and, usually, interchangeable components. Theirspecific properties are characterised bythe system data (nominal force, travel, speed range, mounting height, calibra-tion factors, etc.). Organisatory data alsobelongs to the above, e. g. the seriesnumber or the date of the last calibra-tion.

testXpert® accepts this data automati-cally directly following program start * for the necessary settings* for determination of safety limit values* for correct measurement signal

evaluation

Furthermore testXpert® checks whetheror not* the test can be carried out with this

configuration* all settings have been made* the data has changed for the current

test

TraceabilityThe system data is saved together withother test data. Thus you can trace backwith which test machine, configurationand settings the tests were carried outwhich is required by ISO 9000ff.

User’s advantages System data must no longer be enteredmanually, or be taken over from prede-fined files. Any sources of error linked tothis method are ruled out. Verification issimple, quick and safe.

Video supportVideo sequences are an invaluablesupport, they demonstrate, independentof any language, visually how, forexample, a test machine can be com-missioned, specimen holders can bechanged or which individual protocolscan be created.

Only two steps to testingPreparation of a test series requires onlytwo steps:* call-up the test program foreseen for

the required application * entries or selection of variable para-

meters

Complex user tasks such as changing specimengrips are depicted in easy to understand videosequences.

The positions of the, software monitored, cross-head travel limit switches are entered directly.Alternatively, the current position of the crossheadcan be automatically accepted by clicking at thebutton field <A>.

The Grip to grip separation can be enteredmanually or automatically with a referencemovement of the crosshead.

Prepare the test simply, quickly and safely with testXpert®

11

From test data to protocolThe test machine’s test data is recorded, standardised, saved and evaluatedimmediately* for test sequence monitoring and

control* for display on screen, and * for display and saving of preselected

test results

A protocol is printed after each test ortest series according to the preselec-tions in the test program.

Individual protocol stylingEach standard test program alreadycontains a predefined test protocol thatcan be used straight away, you onlyhave to select thee results which are tobe output with the protocol.

Any individually styled protocols withcompany own logos, lists, tables, textsand diagrams can be created withmaster test programs, or with the optio-nal protocol editor. A protocol wizardand a protocol editor support the user increating protocols.

The layout elements for the protocol andscreen are almost identical, they can, however, be configured differently. Theresults table on the screen can, forexample, only display the results whichare important for releasing the test, whilethe results table in the protocol can con-tain additional data.

Data saving for further useDepending upon the preselection in thetest program, not only all data, but alsoonly selected result data from a test ortest series can be saved. Saving of alldata offers the possibility of tracing theorigin of the result data up to configura-tion and settings for the test machine. The standardised measurement data, i.e.the data converted to its basic units andfree of any tare values can be repeatedlydisplayed in the simulation mode andcan also be evaluated to other criteria.

The PC mouse can be used to mark a section of asingle curve diagram which can then be magnifiedto the size of the respective partial window.

The curve points and the respective evaluationreference lines can be displayed in the curvediagram for selected results.

This view depicts the sequence of parameters or results over a test series.

The universal hardness is derived from the directly measured quantities test load and indentation depth. It can therefore be defined as a virtual measurement quantity, thus enabling its sequence to be displayed, dependent upon another measurement quantity.

More information on the testThe characteristic curves and valuesderived from the force/extension mea-surement only describe the specimen or component behaviour abstractly.Observations, which quite often offerimportant additional information madeby the tester during test, can only besaved as a written commentary.

testXpert® offers for the first time thepossibility of multimedial testing, whichbrings with it, extra information and con-siderably more advantages for the user. This type of testing enables additionalobservations and procedures to besaved synchronously with the test data.

Record the test sequence in its entirityThe test arrangement or an especiallyinteresting part of it, is observed simulta-neously to the force/travel measurementwith a camera and/or microphone. Therecorded pictures and acoustics are digi-talised immediately, and are saved syn-chronously to the test data and thus, they can also be evaluated.

The visual recording, e. g. via a videocamera, shows when, how and wherethe specimen necks-in, kinks, changescolour, or whether it cracks and thecrack lengthens. Acoustic events (crack-ling, cracking) can be recorded via amicrophone.

The following projects are in planning forthe future:* microscopic recordings detect chan-

ges in the micro range that cannot beseen with the naked eye.

* endoscopic recordings offer an internalview of otherwise inaccessible hollowbodies.

* thermo-cameras make thermicdevelopments visible during specimenloading.

Advantages for the userEver increasing international coopera-tion, new partnerships with sub-contrac-tors, as well as added risks caused byever tighter product liability laws placeincreased demands on test technology. It’s becoming ever more important to beable to reconstruct tests in their entirity.

Enter the era of multimedial testing with testXpert®

Visual and acoustic information is also recorded, digitalised and stored synchronously to the force andextension values during multi-media tests.

The stored test data and video pictures can be displayed after the test at any moment in time and as often as required; even in steps frommeasurement point to measurement point.

Synchronous picture and test data recording”Live” Video recordings of the testsynchronously document the resultsequence in pictures and data.

Documentation of setup and performanceOn site video recordings document thetest setup. Thus guaranteeing trace-ability and proof of test means accordingto the valid QS guidelines.

Visualising the assistanceA growing number of video clips showeverything necessary for makingmachine settings and for re-equippingmachines. Handling of software func-tions is explained via tutorial programswhich show the necessary procedure(s)step by step on the PC monitor, e. g.how to create customised test protocols.

ExampleObtaining legends for the graphics

testXpert® offers the possibility of dis-playing the test curves and the respec-tive numerical values of the results in the same colour or type of lines. This enables the curve, with the corre-sponding values in the results table, tobe noticed at a glance whether it is incolour or black and white.

ExampleOnline assistance in testXpert

testXpert® offers the user supportthrough two types of assistance:- general assistance- assistance with the loaded master

test program

General assistance contains informationon basic settings required for carryingout the test, e.g. test machine configura-tion, definition of the specimen, etc.

Assistance with the master test programsupplies explanations on the testsequence, special parameters, inter-pretation of determined results, andmuch more.

testXpert® assistance has find functionssimilar to those of the assistance in stan-dard Windows programs, this is a quickanswer to a current question which isfrequently asked. In addition, numerous tips on themessuch as ”Subsequent evaluation of aspecimen using another grip to gripseparation” (simulation with alteredspecimen parameters).

testXpert® – good in detail

The legends to the graphics can be selected in the specimen table’s settings mask. The test series is then depicted in coloured assignment of results and graphics.

A comprehensive online help is available to the user as an operating support.
