Drugs Provide Escapism from the Pressure of Life

People who are addicted to drugs find it difficult to break the habit; they need money which always seems to run out. And if they do not take drugs due to lack of funds, they suffer from withdrawal symptoms. Therefore in order to function in their daily lives, they turn to crime. They steal, rob and burgle to obtain money, so that, they can enjoy their daily fix.

In the government’s bid to fight drugs, many steps are taken and implemented at various levels. Cracks down on drug addicts begin with operations to round them up from popular haunts all around the city. Even schools carry out drug tests if they suspect that the students are using drugs. Furthermore, before a person gets employed in the public sector, he or she has to undergo a drug test. So, if people are using drugs then they will be under constant pressure from the fear of being found out or caught. Having to look over one’s shoulder all the time certainly adds a lot of pressure to one’s life.

Finally, nobody wants to be associated with the drug addicts. Society shuns drug addicts, generally. Families have been known to disown a child or siblings who are an addict. Friends keep away and everybody perceives a drug addict as society’s trash. Jobs are going to be difficult to come by as no employer is going to employ someone with a drug habit. The pressure of being an outcast in society is going to be unbearable.

QUESTIONS 4-6

Question 4 - 6 are based on the passage below

4. It is clear from the passage that dolphin ----.

A. are proven to be less intelligent than once thoughtB. have a reputation for being friendly to humansC. are the most powerful creatures that live in the oceansD. are capable of learning a language and communicating with humans

5. The fact that the writer of the passage thinks that “we can kill dolphins more easily than they can kill us ----.”

A. does not mean that we are superior to them B. proves that dolphins are not the most intelligent species at seaC. shows that dolphins have a very sophisticated form of communicationD. proves that dolphins have linguistic skills far beyond what we previously thought

2

Dolphins are regarded as the friendliest creatures in the sea and stories of them helping drowning sailors have been common since Roman times. The more we learn about dolphins, the more we realize that their society is more complex than people previously imagined. They look after other dolphins when they are ill, care for pregnant mothers and protect the weakest in the community, as we do. Some scientists have suggested that dolphins have a language but it is much more probable that they communicate with each other without needing words. Could any of these mammals be more intelligent than man? Certainly the most common argument in favour of man's superiority over them that we can kill them more easily than they can kill us is the least satisfactory. On the contrary, the more we discover about these remarkable creatures, the less we appear superior when we destroy them.
