Congratulations to our new student leaders. We have an impressive mix of talents, experience and enthusiasm.
This leadership team will be inducted next Wednesday at 10.00am. Our special guest will be Mr Keith I’Anson, school captain in 1941. Join us at the assembly in congratulating our student leaders.
The Probus Public Speaking competition was held this week in front of a large and very interested audience. Six students spoke in the junior section and three in the seniors. The topics were about things that mattered to the students from the uses of specific technology such as 3D printers and GPS to people power, life and dreams and animal rights.
The junior speakers were Tom Robinson, Marie Knight, Yongyan Xia, Bridget Baker, Stirling Taylor and Connor Day. Connor was awarded first prize with his lively and thoughtful talk on facing your fears, and Marie Knight was runner up with her speech on the importance of smiling which had us all smiling.
Jessica Pereira was very articulate on the power of words to win the senior section, followed by Sarah Knight on the significance of hobbies, and then Kate Robinson on animal rights.
This is a great opportunity for our students to develop their public speaking skills. The audience are highly supportive and appreciative of the students’ efforts, and it allows the audience to see what the youth of Grenfell think and feel about a myriad of topics.
NAPLAN results were released this week. Year 7 and 9 students have received the feedback on their performance. Please read them. If you would like to discuss them in greater detail, contact the school. A team will be closely analysing the data, identifying strengths and areas that need greater consolidation. Initial evaluations show strong growth from Year 7 to 9, particularly in the area of numeracy.
Even though it is starting to get warmer, there are a lot of students getting sick with colds. Please keep the students at home until they are well and reinforce good hygiene of covering the mouth when you cough and washing hands.
Year 11 and 12 commence their final course exams next Thursday: the Trial HSC for Year 12, and the Preliminary course exam for Year 11. The students need to ensure their preparation includes practice of exam style questions and responding to the feedback. Good luck to the Science and Engineering team who head off to the state finals in Newcastle next week.

Visit from Primary School students
Last Thursday, 5/6C from Grenfell Public School and Caragabal Public School came up to the Henry Lawson High School to experiment with paint and learn how to make and use the blog. Ten students of the Henry Lawson High School helped out with the day. We split the primary students into two groups, one group experimenting with painting and one group
learning to blog.
The painting group experimented with paint starting off with the primary colours (blue, red and yellow); we then taught them about secondary and tertiary colours. We taught them how to make colours such as green orange and brown. Once they had learnt all they could about painting, they painted their own design and had a lot of fun.
The second group was in the computer room learning how to make and use a blog. They learnt the rules of blogging and what not to do such as bully each other on the blog or say mean things. We showed them our
blog as a model of how they can make theirs and use it. Mrs Baker took on the teaching role and taught the kids a little bit on industries such as the wool and grain.
All of the partipants had a ball and The Henry Lawson High School students can’t wait to teach the younger students more. We would like to thank Mrs Baker, Mrs Reidy, Mr Cartwright, Ms Meier and all staff and parents who accompanied the children on the day.
Thank you,
From Archibull Team (written by the Publicity Team).

In term 3 Mrs Griffiths and Ms Roper will lead a group of students in participating in this worthwhile project. This will assist our students to become more aware of Australia’s role within the global community and to realise just how fortunate we are to live in this wonderful country.
For those unaware of what this project is all about, we will assemble shoeboxes filled with gifts for children who are living in great need. Many are affected by extreme poverty, war and natural disasters. This is a world wide project and in past years Australian shoeboxes have been delivered to Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam and Cambodia.
What goes into a shoebox? School supplies, toys, clothes, hygiene items, something special. What comes out of a shoebox? Clean water, building of schools and education needs, healthcare and sustainable livelihood training.
How can you help? First of all we need shoe boxes which we will cover with colourful Christmas paper. We invite every student to contribute towards a box. Why not pick up a few supplies whilst shopping? Gifts may be for girls or boys in the following age categories: 2-4 years, 5-9 years, 10-14 years.
