Board Chairman’s Remarks The Trustees of TEST for Malawi would like to extend their heart felt gratitude to TEST for Africa for its continued support during the 2014/15 academic year. This year has been successfully considering that we have contributed 59 graduates to the Malawi’s workforce more especially coming from students who could never achieve their academic careers. TEST Malawi continues to gain ground amongst the public and private tertiary education institutions. During this academic year, T4M Trustees took a decision to award lesser new scholarships but maintain the existing number of scholars. T4M is thankful to TEST for Africa (T4A) and its cooperating partners for their help and support to achieve this fit during this academic year.
1.0 INTRODUCTION The Board of Trustees for TEST for Malawi (T4M) is pleased to present the summary of progress of TEST for Malawi during the 2014/15 academic year. During the 2014/15 academic year T4M offered a total of 113 scholarships of which 32 are new students from the various colleges. A total of 59 students graduated from the various colleges during the same year. T4M is thankful to TEST for Africa (T4A) and its cooperating partners for their help and support towards these achievements during this academic year. The report outlines the various activities undertaken during the year and the progress achieved.
2.0 SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED DURING THE 2014/15 ACADEMIC YEAR Within the 2014/15 academic year, 152 scholarships were awarded. Out of these, 11 students from Kamuzu College of Nursing were awarded with financial support from the Fund Raiser Scholarship. The total number of beneficiaries went down from the previous (2013/14) year’s 188 beneficiaries due to the increase of tuition fees by the Universities which caused a strain on funding. The fees for all new students were increased from K55, 000 to K250, 000 per academic year and this affected the number T4M could support with scholarships.
2.1 Proportion of new TEST scholars by college

2.2 Proportion of TEST Scholars by gender
Figure 1 below shows the proportions of the 2014/15 continuing TEST Scholars in respect to their universities by gender. As is always the case, male students continue to dominate the female students with the exception of Kamuzu College of Nursing (KCN) which have a greater number of female scholars than male scholars. KCN has the highest number of beneficiaries under TEST while the lowest number of TEST scholars is from the Polytechnic.

Special Thanks go to Fund Raiser which provided 11 scholarships for Nursing students at Kamuzu College of Nursing; Dr Harry Porter Foundation for the two scholarships to Plant Science Students at Bunda College of Agriculture; Linacre College Student Common Room which sponsored three Environmental and Natural Resources Management students. These sponsorships continue to make a big difference to the number of students TEST is supporting in the colleges.

What The TEST Scholarship Means To Me… Completing my Bachelor’s Degree was not the end for me, it was only the beginning. It was the beginning of the achievement of my goals and dreams, and a significant indicator that the hard work really paid off. None of that would have been possible without support from TEST. What does the TEST Scholarship mean to me? It is a beacon of hope. Hope for the future. That people out there truly believe in your potential; that they believe in the greater good, for you and for your family, for your community and for your nation. TEST shows us students that we have the potential for the future in our society, that we have the responsibility to represent that society and give back to it. For my family, the TEST scholarship signifies the dawn of a new generation. A generation of intelligent, innovative and very capable individuals that are ready to build, transform and support the family and their community with vision and purpose. Healthy individuals mean healthy communities, and healthy communities mean a healthy nation. That has always been the inspiration for the service of health professionals. A healthy individual can work and contribute to their nation’s economic development.
I have a passion for promoting the health of populations more especially in low-income and resource limited communities as they suffer the biggest blow when it comes to health challenges. Such a journey begins with determining their challenges through research. That takes me on to my next journey which is to further my studies so I can gain the experience needed to assist such populations. My dream is to start and/or be part of a multinational organization that focuses on global health issues that affect the world as a whole and most importantly Africa and my country Malawi.
Currently, I am working at TEST Malawi as an intern, a service I am very glad to do. It gives me great joy to be part of the family that helped me achieve my goals. TEST has also blessed me with the opportunity to serve others. CLEMENT BEZA

He is a third year student from Bunda College of Agriculture- Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Business Management (LILONGWE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES (LUANAR)
Following the death of my parents in 1998, my grandmother took up all the responsibility of taking care of my brother and me. The yoke was too heavy that my aunt and uncle came to her rescue in 2000.
In 2010, my uncle went back to school to upgrade his degree. From then, up until the year I was enrolled to the university, life easy. I almost reserved my place at the college for a year so that my other family members could complete their education first, but I believed God will provide and He really did, through TEST.
What The TEST Scholarship Means To Me…
To me test is like a relief as well as a source of motivation and encouragement. It’s like a candle in the dark leading the way to my graduation. It has made my dreams come true and has uprooted the emotional pressure that I had before I became a beneficiary. The scholarship has not only benefited me alone but it has also relived my family (aunts and her husband). It has given my cousin and big brother an opportunity to continue their education despite the financial challenges faced by my aunt and her husband. I would like to work with the Malawi Government in eradicating poverty and unemployment as a way of contributing to the development of this country. My hope is to own an agribusiness firm that can employ more than a hundred people. If opportunities arise for further studies, I will make use of them. I also want to help the needy like me to achieve their academic goals either through working with TEST- Malawi or through my personal gains.

She is a graduate Bunda College of Agriculture – Bachelor of Science in Irrigation Engineering (LILONGWE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES (LUANAR)
Booker T. Washington once said ‘Success is to be measured not so much by the position one has reached
in life but by the obstacles which he has overcome’. Truly, the obstacles were many. I dropped out of
junior secondary school in 1998 due to an early pregnancy. I married the man responsible, and we went on
to have two more children. After a while, the man abandoned the children and I. This was devastating for
us as I now had to support my three children as well as my old parents alone.
I decided to work as a housemaid in Blantyre which is one of the cities in Malawi. I worked for three years
while I raised my children. At the time, my youngest child was two. Through it all, I never let go of my

dreams to go back to school one day so I saved some money for that purpose. Along the way, I met a Good
Samaritan who assisted me financially through my senior secondary years and helped me complete my
secondary education. I kept my eyes on the prize which was college education. I worked hard, had a
positive attitude and constantly strived to give my best effort, all this paid off and I got into college at the
Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) to study Irrigation Engineering.
Just when I thought that the battle was over, the problem of college tuition came along. Amidst losing
hope and the worry of losing my dream of achieving college education, TEST saved me and led the way to
my undergraduate study completion. Today, overcoming these obstacles stand as my testimony, that
anyone can make it out there if your desire to achieve is greater than the obstacles you see and that TEST
believed in my potential.
This note is to say, I am truly grateful for the financial support rendered to me during my college years at
LUANAR. I have learnt that wanting something is not enough, but we must hunger for it. Our motivation
must be absolutely compelling in order to overcome the obstacles before us. TEST fuelled my motivation
and now I stand tall. May you continue to do for others what you have done for me.
4.0 FINANCIAL REPORT The TEST for Malawi (T4M) audited report will be presented separately. Below in table 5 is a summary of the current balances of financial resources in the various bank accounts. Take note that TEST maintains four bank accounts three FCDA accounts and one Malawi Kwacha account. All payments are made through the Malawi Kwacha account.

5.0 FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS OR THE 2015/16 ACADEMIC YEAR
If the current number of scholars is to be maintained at the current tuition fees during the 2015/16 academic year, it means that TEST will require a total of K28,250,000.00 which translates to BP 33630.00 at the current exchange rate of K840 =1 BP. If we are to take at least 5 new students per college then TEST will need an additional BP 2000. This will translate to BP35, 000 for the 2015/16 academic year. In addition TEST will need at least BP 2000 for the administration of the scholarships.

6.0 LOOKING FORWARD: 2015/16 PLANS
6.1 New TEST Scholarships
TEST will maintain the 113 scholars during the 2015/16 academic year. However, TEST expects to enrol at least 4 new students per college. Currently, there are seven public colleges which include the new Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) giving a total of 27 new TEST scholars during the 2015/16 academic year.
6.2 Scholarship administration
As a way of linking the TEST scholars (both previous and current) T4M intends to form the ‘TEST-Malawi Alumni Association’ which shall encompass a mentorship program where TEST Alumni will mentor current scholars and provide them with special counsel on academic and social issues. This will also be a way of following up the current scholars. The association will also work on group projects that will focus on promoting Malawi’s socioeconomic development based on the programmes they specialized in.
TEST Malawi also plans to develop a follow up system which will be used to keep track of each student’s academic journey.
