Terrorism weighs heavy on aviation But global traffic demand continues to rise

Emirates 777 crash lands at Dubai Emirates flight EK521 was involved in an operational incident upon landing at Dubai International Airport last week. All passengers and crew were evacuated safely. According to passenger footage broadcast online the right engine was seen burning and what appears to be a tangled second inflatable slide that failed to deploy. Allegiant places US$270m order for CFM56-5B engines

Las Vegas-based Allegiant has announced its selection of CFM International CFM56-5B en-gines to power 12 new Airbus A320ceo (current engine option) aircraft. The engine order is val-ued at uS$270m at list price, including spare en-gines. The aircraft order was announced on July 29, with the aircraft expected to enter service between 2017 and 2018. Allegiant has operated CFM-powered aircraft since 2013 and currently has a fleet of 31 CFM56-5B-powered A319/A320 aircraft in service. This order brings the airline’s total CFM-powered fleet to 77 Airbus aircraft, ei-ther in service or on order.

BOC Aviation delivers first of four Boeing aircraft to P.T. Lion Mentari

BOC Aviation announced its latest transaction with P.T. Lion Mentari comprising two Boeing 737-800 and two 737-900ER aircraft. The first of the two 737-900ER aircraft in the transaction was delivered on 28 July, 2016. BOC Aviation has provided purchase-and-leaseback solutions to Lion Air Group since 2012, covering more than 20 Boeing 737NG aircraft.

ago, which was well up on the 0.5% year-over-year growth recorded in May. Capacity climbed 4.7%, causing load factor to dip 0.6 percentage points to 84.3%, still the highest among regions.

Middle Eastern carriers posted a 7.5% traf-fic increase in June, which was well down on the double-digit growth recorded earlier in the year. In part this could be owing to the timing of Ramadan, which tends to depress traffic growth. Capacity rose 14.3%, which caused load factor to dive 4.4 percentage points to 69.9%.

Asia-Pacific airlines’ June traffic increased 8.2% compared to the year-ago period. However, most of the growth relates to the strong upward trend in traffic seen in the fi-nal months of 2015 and into 2016, with June demand barely higher than in February. This could be a natural pause, but possibly is also a sign of Asian passengers being put off travel by terrorism in Europe. Capacity rose 7.3% and load factor inched up 0.6 percentage points to 78.2%.

European carriers saw demand rise 2.1%, the smallest increase among regions, reflecting

the negative impact of recent terrorism. While demand tends to recover reasonably quickly after such events, the repeated nature of the attacks may have a more lasting impact. Ca-pacity climbed 3.4% and load factor slipped 1.1 percentage points to 83.3%.

“It is too soon to know whether recent terror-ist attacks will have a long-term negative influ-ence on demand, nor what will be the impact of Brexit and the events in Turkey,” said Tyler.

Magnetic MRO opens new warehouse in the UK

Estonia headquartered Magnetic MRO, has opened a new warehouse at Gatwick In-ternational Airport, uK, reflecting the con-tinuous expansion of its business and the growing demand from customers. This new facility will allow Magnetic MRO to provide its customers inventory and product avail-ability as well as short shipping times due to the locational advantage of MAC Interiors – aircraft interiors specialists owned by Mag-netic MRO. Gatwick International Airport of-fers daily connections to critical locations in the Magnetic MRO customer network, which will further improve response times for vital AOG deliveries. “This was a natural step for the company in respect to its international growth strategy outside of Tallinn home base,” says Jonas Butautis, CEO of Magnetic MRO, “The uK is seen as a logistical hub for our European and global customers in spare parts trading and other MRO services. Our expansion into aircraft part-out projects de-mands a dedicated, centrally located ware-housing hub and Gatwick is a natural fit.” SkyWest and Bombardier executives Photo: Bombardier

Alaska Airlines to build new US$40m maintenance facility in Anchorage, Alaska

Alaska Airlines plans to build a new uS$40m airplane maintenance facility at the site of the current Signature Flight Support building on Old International Airport Road. Located on the east side of the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, the new hangar will be located about a half mile from Alaska’s exist-ing 37,500-ft² facility. The hangar is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2018. The new hangar in Anchorage is part of an almost $100 million investment the airline is making across Alaska, which also includes up-dating and, in some cases, expanding the 11 airline-owned terminals throughout the state. Also included in this figure is an investment by Alaska Airlines to add three 737-700 freighter aircraft to its fleet, improving the ability to serve cargo customers’ needs with scheduled freighter service.

primarily due to lower revenues of uS$14.6m and lower gain on sale of uS$18.9m, partially offset by lower aircraft impairment charges of uS$7.2m and lower depreciation and taxes of uS$4.4m. Adjusted net income for the quarter was uS$24.2m, down uS$23.0m compared to the prior year period.

Safran delivers strong performance in first-half 2016

For first-half 2016, Safran’s revenue was €8,936m, up 6.3%, compared to €8,403m in the same period a year ago. This €533m increase reflects growth in Aerospace (propulsion and equipment) and in Security. On an organic basis, Group revenue increased by 6.5%, or €547m. Organic revenue was determined by applying constant exchange rates and by ex-cluding the effects of changes in scope of con-solidation. Recurring operating margin reached 14.6% of revenue. For first-half 2016, Safran’s recurring operating income was €1,309m, up €138m, or 11.8%, compared to €1,171m in the first-half 2015. The improvement on an organic basis was €139m, as the impact of currency was negligible and that of changes in the scope of consolidation amounted to €1.00 million. Ad-justed net income was €862m compared with €1,164m in first-half 2015 which included a post-tax capital gain of €419m from the sale of Ingenico Group shares. Fraport to sell partial stake in Thalita Trading

Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services World-wide (Fraport AG) and its consortium partners at Pulkovo Airport have reached an agreement to sell part of their shares in Thalita Trading (Thalita) to Qatar Investment Authority (QIA). Thalita is the parent company of Northern Capi-tal Gateway consortium, which has the 30-year concession for operating Pulkovo Airport (LED) in St. Petersburg, Russia. Fraport will be reduc-ing its stake in Thalita by 10.5% from 35.5% to 25%. Based on the current book value, Fraport expects profit from the transaction to range be-tween 30 and 40 million euros – which in its to-tal sum will impact the Group EBITDA, EBIT and

EBT for the 2016 business year and will posi-tively influence the Group result. The transac-tion closing is expected to be completed in the second half of 2016.

C&L Aviation Group primed for additional expansion

C&L have announced a new, uS$3m expansion to its facility in Bangor. The project, supported in part by a uS$1.2m grant from the united States Economic Development Administration that was recently awarded to the City of Bangor, will re-furbish a newly leased hangar, add two new buildings, increase capabilities and create 100 additional jobs over the next two years. This next phase of growth will add to C&L’s corporate in-teriors capabilities, a quickly growing market for the company, with a newly refurbished interior hangar. Environmental efficiencies will be added throughout the facility, and the increased hangar space and new storage buildings will allow C&L to service more aircraft at once, delivering on its promise to get clients back in the air on time and on budget. In 2014, C&L completed a uS$5m expansion that tripled the company’s space and included a 17,000 ft² paint hangar. That expan-sion was also partially funded by a grant from the EDA and it allowed C&L to move into new markets such as interior refurbishments for ex-ecutive jets.

Spirit AeroSystems second-quarter rev-enues up

Spirit AeroSystems has reported second-quar-ter 2016 financial results driven by strong oper-ating performance of mature programs. Spirit’s second-quarter 2016 revenue was uS$1.8bn, up 8% compared to the same period of 2015, primarily driven by higher production deliv-eries on the A350 XWB and A320 programs, one-time claim settlements, and higher Global Customer Support and Services activity. During the quarter, Spirit concluded long-standing ne-gotiations with Airbus and reached a compre-hensive agreement on the A350 XWB program. As a result of the agreement, Spirit extended the block to 800 shipsets and recorded an ad-ditional net forward-loss of uS$135.7m in the second quarter. Operating income for the sec-

Aircastle posts second-quarter 2016 net income of US$20m, down 52%

Aircastle has reported that total revenues were uS$190.0 million for Q2 2016, a decrease of uS$14.6 million, or 7% from the previous year. A decrease of uS$8.8m in maintenance rev-enues and a uS$6.4m drop in lease rental and finance and sales-type lease revenue account-ed for most of the change. During the second quarter of 2015, Aircastle recorded uS$21.3m of maintenance revenue, primarily due to the expiration of four leases with significant return compensation payments. The decline in lease rental and finance lease revenue was due to the sale of 43 aircraft since the second quarter of 2015. During the second quarter, the company agreed to sell two 25-year old 747-400 freight-ers scheduled to come off lease within the next twelve months and recorded an impairment charge of uS$5.1m. Both aircraft were sold in July. Adjusted EBITDA for the second quarter was uS$182.4m, down uS$32.2m, or 15% from the second quarter of 2015, mostly due to low-er revenues of uS$14.6m and lower gains from the sale of flight equipment of uS$18.9m. Net income in the second quarter was uS$20.0 mil-lion, down 52%, or uS$21.8m. The decrease was

FINANCIAL NEWSoperating activities declined 13% (€2.2bn), re-flecting consumers’ hesitancy to make forward bookings. Free cash flow increased to €1.1bn (prior year: €1.0bn). The equity ratio declined to 10.4% (18.0% at year-end 2015), owing largely to an increase in pension fund provisions in re-sponse to the decline of the IFRS discount rate to 1.6 per cent (2.8% at year-end 2015). At a comparable discount rate in the first quarter of 2015 (1.7%), the equity ratio of 7.5% was sub-stantially lower than its present level, which con-firms the Lufthansa Group’s enhanced financial stability. The 2016 first half-year results do not yet include the impact of the agreement (follow-ing mediation) with the uFO flight attendants’ union under which employees’ retirement sys-tem will be switched from a defined benefit to a defined contribution model; the agreement is still to be ratified. The new tariff agreement will further noticeably improve the equity ratio. The EBIT, the metric which is relevant for dividend payment purposes, is still expected to be above the previous year and will be several hundred million euros above the Adjusted EBIT for the financial year 2016. Thales exercises its put option in Hanwha Thales (HTC)

The jointly-owned company Hanwha Thales was created in 2000 by Samsung and Thales to develop defense electronics in Korea. In June 2015, Samsung sold its defense-related businesses to Hanwha. In this context, Han-wha and Thales negotiated a put/call op-tion on Thales’ shares in their jointly owned company. Considering Hanwha and Thales respective ambitions in the Korean market today, Thales has decided to exercise its put option, for all of its shares, amounting to 50% of Hanwha Thales equity, at the price of KW288bn (approximately €230m). Once governmental approvals are obtained and the sale is completed, Thales shall record a cash inflow of approximately €200m. In 2015, Hanwha Thales contributed €10m to the EBIT of Thales. WEEKLY AVIATION HEADLINES

Thirty Saudi Arabian students are to start air traf-fic control training with air traffic services provid-er Airways. This is the fourth group of students from Saudi Arabia’s civil air services provider, the General Authority of Civil Aviation of Saudi Ara-bia (GACA), to be trained by Airways – helping to fill a critical gap in the Middle East region for the training of air traffic controllers. The students will spend their first year in New Zealand studying English with either Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) in Nelson or Kaplan Inter-national College in Auckland, before commencing a 12-month air traffic control course at Airways’ Palmerston North training campus. They will com-plete an intensive Aviation English module during their first eight weeks on campus.

Aviation engineering and maintenance specialist Commsoft has been chosen to supply its MRO IT system, OASES (Open Aviation Strategic En-gineering System), to the French business-class airline, La Compagnie. The contract represents Commsoft’s first direct customer in France and OASES will support La Compagnie’s operations for its current fleet of two Boeing 757-200s. Commsoft signed the deal licensing the Paris-based airline for five concurrent users, starting immediately and following strong competition from other suppliers. La Compagnie’s OASES license covers a number of engineering and

maintenance modules. Its OASES site is hosted on Commsoft’s private cloud and the chosen modules include core, airworthiness, planning, materials and line maintenance control.

EDM, a provider of training simulators to the civil aviation and defense sectors, has won an order from a major uS airline to supply a Virtual Slide Trainer (VST). The VST provides practical slide deployment training for emergency evacuation on land and when ditching. The solution reduces the significant cost and time associated with the physical slide deployment training of airline cabin crew. The VST will be operated from an Instruc-tor Operator Station (IOS) and fitted to an existing B777 Door Trainer as part of an upgrade program. The VST will use high-definition projectors to dis-play Computer Generated Images (CGI) of various slide inflation sequences that include full and part deployment of the slide on land and water. The VST will provide cabin crew with a highly repre-sentative cognitive training device that will seam-lessly augment the training provided through the use of Door and Cabin Emergency Evacuation Trainers equipped with actual training slides.

Hainan Airlines has filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation to launch an historic new route connecting Las Vegas to Beijing, the first-ever nonstop flight between Las Vegas and Mainland China, announced at the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Author-ity. The service will begin December 2, 2016 and will initially operate Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Chinese tourists are one of the fastest-growing and largest-spending groups of interna-tional visitors to Las Vegas. With the reciprocal 10-year tourist visas and the introduction of ho-tels, programming and amenities geared toward Chinese visitors, Las Vegas has established itself as a major draw for Chinese visitors traveling to the united States.

In the first half of 2016, the Fraport Group achieved revenue of just over €1.2bn. Although

this represents a €17.1m (or 1.4%) decline year-on-year, it must be taken into account that a change in the group’s scope of consolidated companies occurred in the previous business year. During 2015, Fraport sold 51% of its capi-tal shares in the FCS Frankfurt Cargo Services subsidiary and also made a full disposal of Air-Transport IT Services, both formerly wholly-owned subsidiaries. Adjusting for these changes, group revenue in the first half of 2016 advanced by €19.2m, up 1.6%. Revenue was positively im-pacted by higher revenue from the sales of land, among other factors. Outside of Frankfurt, the group’s subsidiaries, Lima Airport Partners, Twin Star and AMU Holdings Inc., also contributed to revenue growth. Among other things, declining passenger volumes at Frankfurt Airport contrib-uted to negative effects on revenue. The group’s EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depre-ciation and amortization) declined by 1.7% to €378.4m in the first six months of 2016. This was also due to the slowdown in passenger traffic at Frankfurt Airport and the corresponding drop in retail revenues. With depreciation and amorti-zation remaining almost constant, Group EBIT reached €214.6m (down 3.3%). The slightly im-proving financial result as well as lower income tax expenses led to a group result of €99.7m (down 3.2%). Higher cash flow used in investing activities and one-off tax effects in the first quar-ter of 2016 caused free cash flow to contract by €40.4m to €149.3m. (€1.00 = uS$1.11 at time of publication.)
