Southern Chapter News
2018 Dues– After a discussion and vote at the May Walsenburg meeting, the chapter has decided
to raise the annual dues to $20. If you have unpaid dues for 2017 the dues are still $10. Any dues col-
lected for 2018 and beyond will be $20. The new amount is in line with other historical societies in
Southern Colorado. The amount is less than $2 per month ($1.67/month) to support our organization. If
you paid dues in advance BEFORE the increase, you are still covered for the years you paid for. Every-
one is strongly encouraged to pay their 2017 dues if they have not done so. The Chapter has already
paid the state dues for all members even if they have not paid for 2017. We currently have 44 of 126
paying members that have not paid dues for 2017. Please contact Peggy Martin to pay dues or to in-
quire if you owe dues.
2017 meetings— The July meeting will be in Beulah on July 15th, the program will be about the
historic buildings of Beulah. August meeting is in the Canon City area. Due to a scheduling conflict for
the program presenters that were scheduled for the October meeting in Pueblo, the Pueblo meeting will
now be September 16th. The program will be on Charlie Goodnight and the Goodnight Barn. The pro-
gram will include a tour of the 1870 barn. The San Luis Valley meeting will now occur on October 21st.
Monthly Newsletter— The Southern Chapter sends out a monthly newsletter by email. Everyone that
has provided an email address receives the newsletter around the first of the month. The newsletter is
available on the website as well. We know that there are members that do not have email or access to
a computer, so they can request a copy be mailed out to them. If you know of anyone that would like to
receive the newsletter that does not have access to email/computer, let Tamara Estes know and she
will mail the newsletter to them. We are limiting this to people without computer/email access to limit
postage at this time.
Peggy Martin has been a Territorial Daughter since 1985, when her mom filled out her membership application for her. Like many of us, she didn’t realize at the time how important her heritage was. Peggy is the descendant of Horatio Hall Chivington Breece. Horatio arrived in Summit County Colorado in 1869, before mov-ing to Custer County in 1870. Peggy was born in Pueblo, Colora-do. She attended school in Pueblo, and graduated from South High School. Peggy has lived in Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and Wetmore. Peggy was misplaced in other states for a time, but is now back home to stay in Custer County. Peggy has worked as a receptionist, in retail sales, was an editor of a magazine, and an office manager, Peggy is the current spectacular Southern Chapter treasurer, serves as secretary/treasurer of the New Hope Cemetery in Wetmore, and is on the Board for the Greenwood Cemetery in Can-on City. Peggy believes that Colorado history and our pioneer heritage are very important, and that is why she is a Territorial Daughter. Peggy has two daugh-ters and a granddaughter that are members, and one granddaughter eagerly waiting for the day when she can join Territorial Daughters.

DOYLE SETTLEMENT
By Tamara Estes
The Doyle Settlement was established by Joseph
Bainbridge Lafayette Doyle in the late 1859 when he purchased 1200
acres of land along two miles of the Huerfano River from the Vigil and St.
Vrain Land Grant.
Joseph “Honest Joe” Doyle was born in July 18, 1817 in Virginia (later
West Virginia). He traveled to the west and southwest as a young man.
He was one of the builders of Fort Pueblo in 1842. He married Maria de
la Cruz Suaso in 1844 in New Mexico. He worked as trapper and Indian
Trader. He later became a pioneer agriculturalist, businessman, and ter-
ritorial lawmaker. Doyle worked for a time for the Bent, St. Vrain and Com-
pany. He was a partner/owner in trading posts/stores at El Pueblo, Hardscrabble, Auraria (later
part of Denver), Tarryall, Colorado City (present day Colorado Springs), Canon City and Pueb-
lo. Doyle built a large frame white house on the land he purchased along the Huerfano River.
The house became known as Casa Blanca. The lumber for the home was transported to the
site from St. Louis, Missouri. Doyle established a farm
and settlement on the land. He farmed 600 irrigated
acres. Doyle established one of the first flour mills in
Colorado to supply his family and workers at the Doyle
Settlement.
Doyle built an adobe schoolhouse at the settlement
and brought O. J. Goldrick to the site to teach his chil-
dren. The remains of the schoolhouse are still standing
and are believed to be the oldest school building in
Colorado.
Doyle was elected the first county commissioner for the newly established Huerfano County.
He was also appointed the first postmaster of Huerfano County and established a post office at
his home Casa Blanca. Joseph Doyle was elected to the State Council (upper chamber of the
Territorial legislature) in 1864 representing Huerfano, Pueblo, Fremont, and El Paso counties.
Joseph Doyle died suddenly on March 4, 1864. He is buried along with family members on a
hilltop overlooking the settlement and school.
The Doyle Settlement was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in April 1980. The
site is also listed on the Colorado Register of Historic Sites. The site is located southeast of
Pueblo along the Huerfano River on Doyle Road.
