del artista para subjetivizar el asunto fotográfico,

más personal y mejor será el resultado.

Con una cámara digital y una fuente de luz

natural filtrada, el autor consigue desarrollar con

encuadre, texturas y gradación un lenguaje visual

que singulariza la serie. Por otra parte, el uso del

color es minimalista y algunas de las composiciones

sugieren un tratamiento coreográfico.

No es aventurado suponer que las series fotográ

ficas de setas que Manuel Única realizó en

2008 y 2012 pertenecen al género de bodegón

fotográfico creado, entre otros, por Edward Wes

ton, Irving Penn y Robert Mapplethorpe. Única se

aproxima y explora visualmente la forma natural

por los caminos que inauguró Weston con sus

fotos de vegetales y conchas marinas.

La decisión de aislar objetos y sujetos de cualquier

referencia a su entorno

habitual y retratarlos

en lo que se conoce

como “terreno neutro”

probablemente es un

tributo a Penn. En el

caso de Mapplethorpe,

lo que toma Única es la

idea de que sea lo que

sea lo fotografiado,

It would not be too much of a risk to assume

that the series of photographs taken by Manuel

Única in 2008 and 2012 belongs to the genre

of photographic still life, created, among others,

by the likes of Edward Weston, Irving Penn and

Robert Mapplethorpe. Única visually draws near

to and delves into natural form, following the

paths originally taken by Weston in his photos of

plants and seashells.

The decision to isolate objects and subjects

from any reference to their normal surroundings

and portray them on a backdrop known as

“neutral terrain”, is probably a homage to Penn.

From Mapplethorpe, Única takes the idea that

whatever is being photographed, whatever

produces sense and meaning, is always provided

by the artist’s way of seeing. What these

authors appear to say, authors who are Única’s

references, is that the greater the artist’s capacity

to bring into the subjective realm that which is

being photographed, the more personal and

better will the result be.

With a digital camera and a source of natural

filtered light, the author manages to develop

a visual language, with a frame, textures

and dimming able to singularize the series.

Furthermore, the use of colour is minimalist

and some of the compositions suggest a

choreographic treatment.

Única’s visual tale, rich in connotations, makes

it possible to draw closer to the object, in an

unusual manner, giving a different perception of

its size.

These series of mushrooms, by Única, are also a

commentary and a viewpoint, on a way of living,

that those who study them have called for and

have obtained a particular field of classification

other than that applied to flora.

Manuel Única ha logrado

generar, en más de tres

décadas de trabajo, una

producción cuya principal

seña de identidad es

una marcada orientación

documentalista y testimo

nial. Sin embargo, su mirada

nunca es literal y siempre

está cargada de subjetividad.

Con estos mimbres, Única

realiza su trabajo en el

periodismo audiovisual, al

mismo tiempo que cons

truye su obra personal en

fotografía.

Reportajes en escenarios

bélicos, breves entrevistas, ruedas de prensa,

accidentes, catástrofes ambientales, juicios, suce

sos y exposiciones son algunos de los temas de los

que Única se ocupa cotidianamente como cámara

de video, para la principal agencia española de

noticias. En su trabajo fotográfico personal, sus

principales asuntos son la naturaleza, el bodegón

y el retrato, habitualmente organizadas en series

abiertas.

Entre los años ochenta y

noventa Única fotografió,

por encargo de profesionales,

empresas, organismos e

instituciones, antiguas pro

pie dades rurales, edificios

urbanos singulares, artistas,

fiestas, paisajes, entre otras

cosas. Mientras tanto, pro

dujo algunas series, entre

ellas una de París, editada

en un número limitado

de carpetas. Otras, entre

ellas algunas sobre la Ga

licia marítima y rural,

fueron expuestas. Todo ello

transcurrió en forma simul

tánea con la práctica de la fotografía de prensa,

qué desarrolló primero en Guadalajara y luego en

Galicia. Tras su migración al periodismo audiovisual

y después de sumergir voluntariamente su obra

fotográfica personal durante un prolongado

periodo, Única decidió desde hace pocos años

hacer visible su producción. Una gran parte de

ella se podrá ir viendo en la galería on line de arte

“Obra sobre Papel”.

In over three decades of work, Manuel Única

has succeeded in generating a production

whose hallmark is a distinct orientation towards

documentary and testimony. However, his way of

seeing is never literal, and is always charged with

subjectivity. With this interweaving, Única goes

about his work in audiovisual journalism, while

at the same time building his personal work in

photography.

Reports on war scenes, brief interviews,

press conferences, accidents, environmental

catastrophes, court trials, events and exhibitions,

are just some of the issues covered by Única on

a day-to-day basis as a video cameraman for the

leading Spanish news agency. In his personal

photographic work, he mainly focuses on nature,

still life and portrait, normally organized into

open series.

In the eighties and nineties, commissioned

by professionals, companies, official bodies

and institutions, among other things Única

photographed old rural properties, unique

urban buildings, artists, festivals and landscape.

Alongside this work, he produced some series,

including one on Paris, published in a limited

number of folders. Others, including some on

maritime and rural Galicia, were exhibited.

All this activity took place alongside his press

photography, which he initially developed in

Guadalajara and later in Galicia. Following his

move into audiovisual journalism and after

voluntarily leaving aside his personal work during

a lengthy period of time, a few years ago Única

decided to present his own production. A large

part of this can be viewed at the on-line art

gallery, “Work on Paper”.
