TERN Data Management and Data Access Policy
Presenta8on by Siddeswara Guru TERN Data Integra8on and Synthesis Coordinator
Siddeswara Guru, Stuart Phinn, Tim Clancy, Andy Lowe, Brad Evans, Alison Bradshaw, Bek Christensen, Suzanne Long , TERN Facility Directors and Data Managers.
What is TERN
• Na8onal Infrastructure for collec8ng, storing and sharing data sets and
knowledge of Australian terrestrial ecosystems. • Builds on past and current data collec8on ac8vi8es by all level of
government, non-‐government and research organisa8ons.
Key outcome
provide a shared and collabora8ve research infrastructure to address Australia’s cri8cal ecosystem science and management challenges.
• Enable more coordina8on and collabora8on • Provide physical and data infrastructure • Build a community
• Collabora'on and co-‐ordina'on: Ecosystem science research cycle(s)

TERN data licensing policy
• The least-‐restric*ve licence/terms possible are to be applied to all data made available through TERN.
• Data generated through TERN funding (“TERN data”) will be made freely and openly available by the relevant Facility, noCng that:
v Users will be required to aGribute the source of the data; and v JusCfiable condiCons protecCng sensiCviCes of data will be allowed.
TERN data licensing policy
• Third party/exisCng data (“non-‐TERN data”) provided to/through TERN will be made freely and openly accessible through the relevant Facility, noCng that:
v Users will be required to aGribute the source of the data; and v Other jusCfiable condi*ons of use (including data sensi*vi*es) will be determined by the data custodian in negoCaCon with the relevant Facility, subject to the data being made available under the least restricCve licence/terms possible.
• TERN recommends a range of preferred data end user licences to achieve TERN’s data access goals.

• Adherence • Data source organisa8on policy and procedures • Facility host organisa8on policy and procedures • TERN data licensing policy
• Challenge • To idenCfy whether copyright subsist with the data. • IdenCfy appropriate license
TERN Data license Suite

• TERN A\ribu8on-‐share Alike-‐non commercial (TERN-‐BY-‐SA-‐NC) • Other licenses
• Crea8ve Commons Australia open source licenses for copyright materials

TERN’s impact on research data sharing – helping change • Domain specific data management
• Data and meta-‐entry tools • Meta-‐data standards • Open standards for data delivery
• Flexible licensing policy • Links to na8onal research data catalog • Ability to provide citable data (with DOIs)
• Work under progress
• Scalable and replicable infrastructure
TERN’s impact on ecosystem science and management
• Standardised data collec8on methodologies • New con8nental scale data products • Reduce duplica8on across jurisdic8ons • Improve knowledge for science to management • Promote collabora8on and re-‐use of data
• higher return of investment for funding agencies
