Example of word problems

• Example onePhilip is going on a 4000-kilometer road trip wit three friends. The car consumes 6 liters of gas per 100 kilometers, and gas costs $1.50 per liter . If Philipp and his friends want to split the cost of gas evenly, how much should they each pay.

Step 1: Figure out what the problem is asking.

Step 2: make it into a math problem: 6x40=a ax1.50= b b/3=answer

Step 3: SOLVE!!! 6x40=240 240x1.50=360= $360 360/3=$120

Answer: $120

• Example two

The sum of two numbers is 84, and one of them is 12 more than the other. What are the two numbers?

Step 1: let x+y=84 x=y+12

Step 2: x+y=84 y+12+y=842y=84-122y=72y=36

Step 3: x=y+12x=36+12x=48

Answer: 36, 48
