    Introduction:-

    The Indian National Congress (INC) also known

    as Congress party. It is a major political party in India. Thecongress party was established in 1885. The congress party

    played a major role in the independence of India. For longtime off period congress party has the monopoly in the Indian

    politics. In India most prime-ministers are from the congress party. Mostly congress leads India for eight times.

    Thecongress party is currently under the leadership of the SoniaGandhi. Sonia Gandhi joined the party in 1999. In thecongress party mostly the leaders from the Gandhi familyitself, like Indira Gandhi. The congress party mostly led bythe Nehru-Gandhi family for most of the part.

    In the 2009 general elections, thecongress party emerged as the single largest party in the Lok Sabha, with 206 of its candidates getting elected to the 543members house. Consequently, it along with a coalition of allies called the United Progressive Alliance(UPA) was ableto gain a majority and form the government. There have beenrepeated attempts by the Indian nationalist groups such as

    Bharatiya Janta party to discredit the Sonia Gandhis on the basis of her foreign origin she is Italian born. At the timeRahul Gandhi attract the youth and the rural people.

    History:-

    The Indian national congress was born on December 28, 1985. Following are the founder of the Indian

    National Congress:-

    Allan Octavian Hume.

    William Wedderburn.

    Umesh Chandra Banerjee.

    Surendranath Banerjee.

    Man Mohan Ghosh.

    Dadabhai Naoroji.

    Dinshaw Wacha.

    We can categorized the history into 2 eras.

    Pre-independence era - The Indian NationalCongress fought for the independence of theIndia. The Indian National Congress played avery big role in driving the Indian message to

    wider reach and people support with more than15 million active members and 70 millionsupporters spreading into the whole countryduring independence from the British rule. Theother group was the moderate group. Themoderate were the more educated and wanted towin peoples faith to lead the nation toindependence without bloodshed the activistshowever wanted to follow a revolutionary path

    and make it a militant organization. Post-independence era In Indian politics

    congress always have the good position. Out of the 60 years since independence, the Indian

    National Congress has been in power for 48years. In 15 th Lok Sabha, INC stands out as thelargest Indian party in the country.

    Womesh Chandra Banerjee was the first Presidentof the INC. the First meeting was scheduled to be held inPune, but due to a plague outbreak there, the meeting wasleter shifted to Bombay.

    The first session of INC was held from28-31 December 1885, and was attended by 72 delegates. Inthe end of the 19 th century and the early year of the 20 th

    century congress attract the younger group. The younger group added a new vitality and gave a new dimension to the

    policies and programs of the INC. This new group wassharply critical of the ideology and method of old leadership.These new groups were called the extremist.

    Extremists idealsmainly guided the second phase of the Indian NationalCongress from 1905 to 1919. They advocated that theadoption of Swaraj as the goal of the congress to be achieved.

    Indian Prime Ministers from the Congress party:-

    Jawaharlal Nehru (1947-1964).

    Gulzarilal Nanda (May-June 1964, Jan 1966). Lal Bahadur Shastri (1964-1966).

    Indira Gandhi (1966-1977 and 1980-1984).

    Rajiv Gandhi (1984-1989).

    P.V. Narasimha Rao (1991-1996).

    Manmohan Singh (2004-2009 and 2009 to present).

    Mostly congress party leads the India. Now it leads for the 8 th

    time. The congress party has the great response from theIndian people in 2009 election. In 2009 election congresscome with a majority.

    Currently congress rule in the following states:-

    Andhra Pradesh.

    Arunachal Pradesh.

    Delhi.

    Haryana.

    Policies and programmes:-

    INC has the following policiesand programmes.

    Social policy:-

    Social policy of the INC is based on theGandhian concept of Sarvodaya means upliftment of allsections of the society. In particular INC gives specialemphasis on the wale fare of the economically and socially

    disadvantaged sections of the society. The party supports birthcontrol and family planning but oppose elective abortion, in

    particular sex selective abortions.

    Economic policy:-

    Traditionally, economic policy of the INC

    emphasized on the importance of the public sector aimed atestablishing a socialistic pattern of society. The economic

    policy of INC has been changed somewhat and it is nowcommitted to liberalization and market economy, though atthe same time it is in favour of taking a cautions proceedingwith it to ensure that the weaker sections are not affected toohard by the liberalization process.

    Controversies:-

    The congress party dominated the politicsof India for over a century. There are many charges of corruption and any other charges.

    State of emergency (1975-1977):-

    In 1975 the Allahabad highcourt declared the election void, but Mrs Indira Gandhirejected it. By using her strong parliamentary majority, her

    party had amended the constitution and altered the balance of power between the central and state in favour of the centralgovernment. She had twice imposed President Rule. Gandhimoved to restore order by ordering the arrest of most of theopposition leaders. Her cabinet and govt. Then recommended

    that president declare a stste of emergency, because of thedisorder and lawlessness following by the allahbad high court.It is one of the most controversial periods in Indian history.

    Anti-sikh riots(1984):-

    Congress workers including Jagdish

    Tytler and Sajjan kumar were accused of inciting and participating in sikh riots. It is done after the assassination of

    Indira Gandhi by 2 of her sikh body guards followingOperation Bluestar.

    Volcker report:-The Independent Inquiry Committee(IIC)

    appointed by the united nations. They submit their final reporton October 27, 2005. In it they told congress party is

    beneficiary an entitlement of 4 million barrels of crude. In itMr. K. Natwar with an entitlement of 4 million barrels.

    Allegation of the BJP:-

    The opposition party BJP has accusedthe congress party and its allies of being pro-muslim,supporting sharia laws and showing unnatural favouritism tothe Indian muslim community or even promotion of Islamicconservatism.

    Charges for bidding for seats:-

    The senior congress leader Margaret Alva made a charge that congress seats for theelections were up for bidding as opposed to a illegalappointment to run. The congress party denying the claim, aswell as dropping her general secretary of the party.

    Rahul Gandhisays that Democracy in political parties is non-existent inIndia. You cannot enter unless you are well connected." Inresponse the recent allegations he said, "I had made somerecommendations to include some younger boys. I am notunhappy with the distribution of tickets.

    The BJP and manyHindus have often accused Congress Party and their allies of

    being soft on Islamic extremism, Islamic terrorism and

    Islamism by scrapping Prevention of Terrorist Activities Act(POTA).

    SWOT analysis of Congress:-

    Strength:-

    Congress party has the following strengths:

    Oldest party of India:-

    The congress party is the oldest partyof the India. It was established in 1885. Congress play a very

    big role into the independence of India. It is the major party of the Indian politics. There are the eight prime-ministers thatrule the India are from the congress party. Indian people havemore faith in congress party and their policies.

    Leading the country for the most time:-

    For the long timeCongress has the monopoly in the Indian politics. Congress

    party rule or lead the India for the eight times. It leads theIndia more than 48 years after the independence. There is noother party as big as congress. The only other party is BJPthat was established in 1980.

    Peoples faith in it:-

    Congress party exist from 1885. It

    was play a very big role in the independence of the India.Mostly the congress leaders were the freedom fighters andthey were fight for the independence of the India. So peoplehave the more faith in it.

    Young leaders:-

    Congress party have the more youngmembers than any other party in India. In 15 th Lok Sabhaelection there are more young leaders those win the election.In the congress party there is many younger ministers. RahulGandhi who is also a young person takes part in the allactivity of the congress party. In 15 th Lok Sabha electionRahul plays a very big role in winning.

    Good policies:-

    disadvantaged sections of the society. In this they includeeducation, employment etc.

    Good leadership:-

    It leadership is comes across as better equipped to handle challenges and the problems. It had the

    good leader like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi etc. In presenttime they also have the good leaders.

    No matters like hindutav:-

    Congress party dont have any

    matter like hindutav that is followed by the BJP. Congress believes that all person are same there is no Hindu and noMuslim.

    Other strengths:

    Good internal system that works in the coordination toensure the success of the party.

    Creativity and intellectual depth in the organization.

    Mostly have the young people.

    Absence of any big national party except BJP.

    Weakness:-

    Congress party have the following weakness:

    Dependence on allies:-

    The congress party mostly dependent

    on the other parties to the majority in the assembley. Thisallies harm the party for many time. The allies has their owndemand that is harmful for it and for the nation.

    Supports the Muslim community:-

    Congress party supportsthe Muslim people so the other community like Hindu dontlike it. BJP claims that the congress party is the Muslim party.

    Controversies:-

    There are many controversies with the

    congress party like anti Sikh riots (Blue star),emergency etc.

    Dont have the support of the RSS:-

    Like BJP congressdont has the support of RSS, so they dont have the support

    of the vast network of the RSS. RSS dont support it becausethey think that congress support the Muslim community notthe Hindu. Other thing is that Sonia Gandhi is not belongs tothe India so they dont support the congress.

    Family leader:-

    In the congress party mostly the main leader is from the Gandhi family. There is no other person that

    became the chairman of the congress party. The leadership iscontinued from family to family. So the people dont have thefaith in the party.

    Opportunities:-

    Followings are the opportunities of congress. The party is in power of the five states and in centre.

    The image of the Sonia Gandhi has been improving.

    In the past few years congress has attracted people fromdifferent political camps.

    There is internal conflict in the BJP so that is the very big opportunity for the congress.

    Have better leader in compression to the BJP. Welfare schemes could fetch electoral dividends.

    Threats:-

    Followings are the threats of congress party

    Allies are hemming it in the pre-poll scenario anddeserting it in the post-poll scene.

    Rising of the third front.

    The number of people who are inclined to be pro-Hindutva is increasing almost every day.

    Rising unemployment is leading to frustration among theyouth.

    This is the swot analysis of the congress party. It tells thathow congress is playing a very big role in Indian politics.

    Conclusion:-

    After analysis of the congress party we can say

    that at the present time party have the majority. The party isthe oldest party in Indian politics so it connected with peoplefrom the long time.

    Policies and programs are very good because they are related with the people and beneficial for them. It is the major party of India in it more young peopleare involved, they work hard and with great passion.

    In 2009 congresscomes with the very big majority in the Lok- Sabha. It has themajority in the 7 states and in 3 states with alliance. To gainthe high attention of the Hindus they should change their strategy because Hindus thinks that congress party is theMuslim party and it supports the Muslim people.
