In 2011, the Department of Education (DepEd) administered a shift to a fresh

learning scheme — the K to 12 basic education program. an! people "ere resistant to

the ne" education s!stem. Despite this, the go#ernment is $een on re#olutioni%ing the

&hilippine education.

! arguments. Kindergarten is a preparation for Elementar!, Elementar! is a

preparation for 'igh chool, and 'igh chool is a preparation for ollege. ollege is

supposedl! a preparation for either getting emplo!ed or establishing one*s o"n business.

+e#ertheless, realit! is, college graduates are not prepared for almost an! ob- he! need

to be comprehensi#el! trained b! the compan! he got into- /hat happened to the 1

!ears of $indergatentocollege headbanging stud! urprisingl!, this does not happen

onl! in the &hilippines. 3ll countries implementing the K12 s!stems including 4inland

"hich is considered to be the best in education at the moment succumb to the same

situation "here fresh graduates fall short of s$ills and abilities to $eep up "ith the obs

offered to them-

I ha#e been critici%ing positi#el! the old s!stem and the K12 s!stem of education

since time immemorial because both don*t cater for "hat the industries and national

econom! need. /hat the academe authorities don*t see are the things "e (in the

industries) normall! li#e "ith. hese are the conditions I "ould li$e to raise here so

people "ho loo$ at one side of the coin should reali%e that the coin is multisided5 not

 ust t"o5 but man! sides-

+o" getting straight to the point, "hat "e need to dri#e the progress of a countr!

are the fast actions of the go#ernment and hea#! business acti#ities of the pri#ate sectors.

6o#ernment needs to e7ecute plans to build infrastructures such as bridges and roads,

and other probusiness policies. &ri#ate businesses should utili%e the latest s!stems such

as 8ean 9 ean, Kai%en, i7 igma, I:, etc. to get high profile bottomline results. 3ll

these shall generate high 6D& for the countr! and thus ma$e most of us successful- ;!

the "a!, does an! school teach those information

o "hat should be the role of the educational institution he schools led b! the

Department of Education should determine and implement a nononsense curriculum

<E8E=3+ to economic progress. /hat are the fundamental areas of $no"ledge the

students need to be #ersatile on In a nutshell, businesses need people "ho are s$illful in

:>+I3I:+, ;3I 3' 9 3II, IE+E, 4I+3+I38 9

;>I+E 3+36EE+, and ;E'3=I:<38 IE+E. 3ll these subects can be

learned in ust :+E ?E3<5.. pro#ided irrele#ant subects li$e >I, 'I:<?,

&'?I38 ED>3I:+, etc are offered on @I"anttota$eitA basis and not as

compulsor!.

a$e a loo$ again on the subects the students are ta$ing from Elementar! to

ollege. ?ou "ould no" reali%e ho" irrele#ant man! of them are5 hence, a lot of time,

energ!, and mone! are "asted along the "a!. In other "ords, our present curriculum

speciall! the K12 is indeed a burden to a producti#e &hilippines 5 if !ou #ie" it on a

macroeconomic perspecti#e.

K12 is not, and "ill ne#er be, the solution to the problems of the &hilippines.

here is such a shortcoming "hen the main de#elopment programs of a countr! are based

on globali%ation. It hinders the countr!Bs internal ad#ancement because it al"a!s see$s

the appro#al of other countries. In turn, the countr!Bs people are forced to abide

international standards "hich indirectl! results in the loss of a nationalistic character.

4urthermore, the implementation of K12 "ill onl! bring more hardships to the

common 4ilipino. he poorer graduates of this program "ill more li$el! choose to "or$

in blue collar obs that fit their additional s$ills to help their families instead of pursuing

college thereb! hurting their chances to reall! ha#e a chance of a better life. /hile I do

belie#e that there is a need to re#ise the basic education curriculum of the &hilippines, a

program "hich has globali%ation has its basis "ill ne#er be efficient. 3lso, the

de#elopment of basic education should coincide "ith the de#elopment of tertiar!

education in order to pose a genuine change.

here are no ad#antages. 3n e7tra 2 !ears depri#es a famil! of income in a societ!

"here the issue of po#ert! has not been addressed. ost of those "ho finish college "ill

find that the! need massi#e corporate training to $eep up "ith the demands of

professional life. In technical fields, !ou might be slo" but !ou "ill learn as !ou go

along. :ne cannot be thoroughl! prepared in 10 or 12 !ears of education.

he goal of education in the &hilippines must be defined. Do the &hilippines "ant

to become li$e the >nited tates as a technolog! center >nless there is something

compelling it ma! ta$e another generation to surpass the >nited tates. 8earning in the

>nited tates has one simple principleC access to man! fields of interests through a

multitude of media, and e7perts a#ailable to help $ids in high school. hese are the better

issues to address no". /ithout a significant transformation of the support needed for $ids

to attain e7cellence, K12 is ust a a "aste of time.

/e do reali%e that there are man! college graduates "ho are launched uite earl!

in the emplo!ment game and the! are often "ithout obs. ;ut this all the more argues for

the strateg! that the emplo!ment problem must be resol#ed. K12 graduates "ill onl!

face the same problem.
