Winter Sport Teams
The majority of our students who played winter
sport have completed their rosters for the season
and are now looking at new opportunities for
spring and summer sport participation. I would
like to thank the many parents, friends and
teachers who volunteer their time over the winter
months assisting with coaching, umpiring,
managing and supporting our teams. Without
their support, many students would not gain the
wonderful experience of being involved in a team
sport. Later in the year, we look forward to
thanking all our volunteers that have been
involved in coaching or assisting with our sporting teams. To our Health and Physical Education Staff,

Grade 10 Taster Day at Don College
Last week, our Grade 10 students enjoyed their first taste of college life, where they experienced a day in the
life of a college student at Don College. Our Grade Coordinator, Mr Oliver, works closely with Don College
staff to ensure a smooth transition for our students into Grade 11. Our retention rate from Latrobe High
onto Don College is extremely high; we are proud of the commitment our students make to further their
education and the wonderful guidance Mr Oliver and our Grade 10 Team give students. We received feedback
that our students participated fully in the programs and experiences offered. The students that I have spoken
with, thoroughly enjoyed the day. Over the next few weeks, Grade 10 students will be completing a transition
profile on the ‘My Online’ web page. The questions ask students to list their intent for Grade 11 and 12. We
will use this data to help assist students in their preferred educational pathway. We, along with Devonport
High, Reece High and Sheffield, are a part of the Devonport Coalition where we support the majority of our
students in their transition to Don. We are also very aware that it may be better for some students to
continue their Grade 11 and 12 education with us in a smaller and individually tailored program. As we don’t
run VET courses, some of our students have completed a shared enrolment where they complete their VET course at Don and they complete their TASC courses with us. Jenny Stafferton is our AST leading our Grade

Grade 6 Taster Day
We had Approximately 150 Grade 6 students from across all our feeder primary schools attend our taster day
on Tuesday 3 September. They had the opportunity to spend time in three Personal Interest subjects and
continue to build relationships across their year group. An added surprise and bonus was the unplanned fire
alarm, where the students were extremely mature and well behaved. We were extremely impressed with how
the students followed our school values across all aspects of the day. Based on the numbers that attended, we
will have six classes next year in Grade 7 and our teaching staff who develop our timetable have already
started to plan for the increase in numbers.
NAPLAN Data
Today, we mailed out individual NAPLAN results to parents and carers of our Grade 7 and 9 students.
Congratulations to students who tried their hardest and made sure their result reflected their best effort.
While NAPLAN is one test on one day, it does give us important data that informs future teaching decisions
and gives us an idea of how we are tracking as a school over time. The data for Latrobe High School is
showing very clearly that the work we have undertaken over the last few years, is showing positive results in
some areas and requires further effort and support in others.
On the flip side, not all students need to see this data. We understand that some students will not perform to
the standard they were aiming for, and comparisons with other students across the country can at times be
overwhelming. We will leave it in your hands to decide if your child will benefit from seeing their individual
data. Remember, NAPLAN is not a picture of the whole child and only provides a very small snapshot. Many
students have wonderful skills and attributes that will not show up in a NAPLAN test.

LEVIES
Shortly, Latrobe High will be setting the levies for the 2020 school year. We are now approaching the end of
term three and would appreciate your attention to any levies that are still to be paid to the school for
2019. Please note that the school offers a payment plan that enables the levies to be paid off over a period of
time. This is tailored to each family’s circumstances and can be as small as $20 per fortnight. Please contact
the school with your proposed payment plan so we may formalise the agreement. It’s important to note that
this will avoid the debt being monitored by the Department of Education’s Finance Services.
GRADE 8 REPORT
After 7 ½ weeks of studious work inside the classroom, this week the Grade 8 cohort were treated to
an excursion to Gunns Plains Caves and Preston Falls as part of their current focus of study in
Geography - ‘Landscapes and Landforms’. Students visited the caves and waterfalls to enhance their
understanding of how people value land, as well as to learn about the formation and shaping of the
landforms in these local landscapes due to both natural processes and human influences. Students
particularly enjoyed being 50m underground and having all the lighting switched off by our guides!
Students will now use the knowledge and understanding gained by visiting the Gunns Plains Caves to
form the basis of their final HASS assessment for this term.
Other news outside the classroom involves a couple of Grade 8 students participating in one of the most
highly anticipated events of the year…Red Faces. Congratulations to Montana Heazlewood for her
lovely rendition of Christina Perri’s - ‘A Thousand Years’ and Izaac Farrell for his second place
performance of ‘Someone You Love’ by Lewis Capaldi.
As a result of their efforts outside of LHS, a congratulations must also go to Ely Blizzard and Cohan
Jeffrey who were named in the AFL Tasmania Next Generation Academy for U14 Boys.

GRADE 9 REPORT
Term 3 has flown by and it is nearing the end. Students are productively working through their learning
programs, and it is great to some of their great work. Some of this work includes: Macey and Keisha making a
lantern in Ceramics; Ella preparing some slip so she can join her legs that she has made to her bowl; Jayden
building positive relationships with the Learning for Life team; Ryan building a hall table and waiting for the glue
to dry; Dove preparing fried rice in Catering for students to purchase from the canteen; Aston working hard
using a coding program called Scratch; Reeve and Aidyn looking at their next project as they are preparing to
build a small cabinet of their own.
A few weeks ago, Mr Armitstead and Mrs Heazlewood spoke to the Grade 9 students about our 2020
leadership opportunities. The students were keen to get as much information as possible and I wish those who
are applying for a spot on the 2020 LHS Leadership team the best of luck. I remind these students to start their
leadership now, and to ensure that they are always displaying the school values.
Last Wednesday during the PI5, the students participated in a ‘Student Wellbeing’ Survey. The survey was
designed to gather important information to allow for support services to plan for appropriate support for the
welfare of our students. All students across the school will complete the survey at some stage.
This Wednesday during the PI5, the students participated in a presentation aimed to raise awareness and
educate the students about melanoma. The presentation included information, and also had a powerful story
about a sufferer of the disease. There was also an opportunity for some of the students to have their spots
checked and scanned. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students and I would like to thank the volunteers

OVERLAND TRACK WALK
During the weekend of 31 August and 1 September, 6 students and 3 staff members with the support
of Dean Wotherspoon, Graeme Brown and Loretta Lincolne endeavoured to conquer the Overland
Track in awareness for Gold September and the Tim Blair Run for the Kids Foundation. Belle
Needham, Elijah Hyvattinen, Sif Svendsgaard, Oliver Lancaster, Monique Steers and Jonte
Armitstead all trained extremely hard over the 8 week lead up and completed multiple walks around
Port Sorell, Western Creek, Narawntapu National Park and Mt. Roland. The students were joined by
Mr. Karafilis, Eve Bell and myself.
During the Overland Walk, we had much support from various people and we would like to thank:
Mrs. Henry and her friend Carla for supporting us and assisting in walking back the injured
Monique! Monique did such a fabulous job getting to where she got to before succumbing to
injury and I know her decision to stop was a difficult one to make!
Mrs Armitstead for meeting us at Pelion Hut whilst walking in from Arm River to ensure we had
a familiar face at the half way point and keep up our good vibes to pursue the following morning
Tim Blair for allowing us to walk in your foundations honour and giving the students a purpose
to complete the walk. We are inspired by all that you do to raise awareness and valuable funds
to combat childhood cancer
Reece High School for your support and commitment to the cause. You guys did an amazing job
to complete your walk- an effort you should be very pleased with!
Sims Coaches for sponsoring the travel to Cradle Mountain and the return from Lake St Clair
for us tired and weary walkers.
We met at Latrobe High School on Saturday 31 August at 5:15am for a 5:30am departure. We arrived
at Dove Lake at 7:15am and were ready to rock and roll at 7:30am. We soldiered on through all the
huts and finally arrived at our half way point (Pelion Hut) at 6:00pm. We then ate tea, went to sleep
and woke up at 1:00am! We started day two at 2:30am and thoroughly enjoyed walking through the
dark dodging up and over fallen trees. Sunrise was had at the old Du Cane Hut before we continued
on to Narcissus hut and catch the ferry back to Lake St Clair. There were many broken and tired
bodies but a major sense of accomplishment when we got off the boat and onto the bus!
I am extremely proud of the team and what they were able to achieve and I know that they will reflect
on this for many years to come! Well done!

JUNIOR MATHS
We are very excited to inform you about some changes that are underway in our Junior Maths
department (grade 7 & 8). Traditionally in schools, it has been extremely difficult for one teacher to cater
to the learning needs of 25 individual students. As a result, not every student has experienced success in
maths, with many students finding it particularly stressful or difficult. Our teaching team is now working
very hard to change that, by changing the structure of our maths curriculum so that instead of all
students learning the same topic at the same time, each student will focus on only what they are ready to
learn. This means that every student can experience success in maths.
Our maths team will be sending home further communication to parents about these changes and we will
be holding an information session later in the year. In the meantime, we encourage you to chat with your
child about what it means to have a growth mindset (you can find out more about this at https://

SCHOOL SOCCER 2019
This year in the Devonport Junior Soccer Club High School roster, Latrobe High School fielded two
boy’s and two girl’s teams. The season started off with plenty of close affairs but once the Latrobe teams
got going, they were highly competitive teams with many victories. The games were 6 a side due to the
lack of numbers associated from the other schools but this enabled great passing, good running and
plenty of teamwork. Unfortunately towards the end of the season, our numbers did drop off but I am
happy to report that Latrobe Red for the boys (coached by Elijah Hyvattinen) consisting of Grayson,
Haydn, Jarom, Charlie, Jaren, Billy and Jack finished on top of the ladder, as did the Latrobe Blue
team for the girls (coached by Mr. Humphrey) consisting of Tess, Monique, Belle, Kate, Ella,
Piper, Megan, Maddy, Ava, Renee and Kaylee. These two teams will now go on and play for the
North West Cup at a later date. Thank you to the coaches: Stuart Smith (Latrobe Blue boys),
Elijah Hyvattinen (Latrobe Red boys), Mr. Humphrey (Latrobe Blue girls) and Lynda
Gaffney (Latrobe Red girls) - without your support, the teams wouldn’t have been able to play.

to work commitments.
