May was our first student to achieve a perfect ATAR and has successfully completed her Law Degree at Sydney University. Each year she supports this award, which encourages students to reflect on what they have achieved through school and public education. The award has a written component, where students outline their achievements and contribution to the school and community, as well as a personal reflection of what Cherrybrook Technology High School means to them, which may be presented in any form. This year we have photography, a painting, a children’s book, sculpture, a model, photo-story book, a creative dance and even a cake in the form of A Block, each reflecting the creativity of the entrants. Here are some excerpts from the written reflections… “The May Samali award is one of the most prestigious awards which Cherrybrook Technology High School has to offer. CTHS is always striving to give the best education to its students and I am honoured to be a part of it. In my opinion the school has created a nurturing environment for students to excel in academics, sport and most importantly to grown into responsible students…” “One of the greatest privileges offered as a student at Cherrybrook Technology High School, or rather as a student at a public school, is the support and encouragement for all students to ‘achieve together’ and as an entire cohort perform at our utmost best. Hence the mindset for ‘achieving together’ along with the provision of dedicated teachers, students and family members has allowed me to maintain a positive attitude in academics for all key learning areas…” “…the school is not simply ‘good’ for its education, and consequently its results but also because of the opportunities it offers, its acceptance of all people and the resources that it provides that have led me to develop into someone who I am proud to be…” Farwell and Thank You It is with sadness we farewell Mrs Natalie Blenman, an excellent and well-loved member of the English KLA for the past ten years. We wish Mrs Blenman all the best and thank her for her commitment and dedication to students past and present. Below are some words from Mrs Blenman: “It is with mixed emotions I leave Cherrybrook Technology High School after ten fulfilling and enjoyable years. I am looking forward to retirement and the ‘next’ stage in my life and I hope to spend the time reading, gardening and travelling. In my career I have had the pleasure of teaching many wonderful students and I will always remember with fondness the sincerity, support and kindness of the students of Cherrybrook Technology High School. Just remember! Use what talents you possess because the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang the very best. Wishing you all health and happiness in the future. Mrs Blenman” MADD Concert On Wednesday evening the excellent showcase of creative performance drew a large audience to watch the annual Music Art Dance and Drama (MADD) extravaganza. Entering the MPC the audience was drawn to the array of artworks completed by Cherrybrook Technology High School students, showcasing the variety and skill of the artworks. It proved to be an evening of musical diversity opening with Mr Dollin’s concert bands who played an excellent medley and an exciting compilation from Pirates of the Caribbean. The variety continued with the guitar ensemble whose performance ranged from ballads to Metallica, which was adeptly followed by two pieces from the string ensemble. Both the choir and vocal ensemble sang beautifully under the direction of Mrs Gardner, and Mr Felton’s big band closed the show with the fanfare we have come to expect from this exceptional group. ensemble and class groups both entertaining and presenting thoughtful pieces on which to reflect.

Thank you to the whole CAPA KLA and other staff for their work preparing, practising and organising all artists on the night.

Sculpture by the Sea Students from Year 11 Visual Arts, along with Mr Maynard and Mrs Jaeger, attended the Scultpure by the Sea exhibition on Friday 1 November. Over 100 artworks were displayed in a spectacular setting on the coastline between Bondi and Tamarama Beaches. This excursion gave students the opportunity to review an exhibition and artwork for their first Art Criticism assignment for their HSC studies. Students were impressed by the diversity of artworks, many gaining inspiration to develop their own ideas for their major work.

This was a worthwhile experience for students to see contemporary, site specific artworks that push the boundaries of traditional materials and techniques.

Year 6 Transition Day It was a daunting but exciting morning for 79 Year 6 students who visited Cherrybrook Technology High School on Wednesday 20 November as part of the transition program for the incoming 2014 Year 7 group. The prospective new students were able to familiarise themselves with their new learning environment with an orientation of the school and participation in an exciting lesson in areas such as TAS, science, art and PD/H/PE. A fun and relaxed morning tea ended the program where students could continue to make new friends in a relaxed setting.

The orientation of prospective 2014 Year 7 students will continue on Wednesday 4 December, with the entire cohort and their families visiting CTHS for another fun filled day. On behalf of Mr Fitzgerald, Mr Hartman and Miss Wilson, we look forward to meeting all the prospective Year 7 students.

Davidson Shield Cricket – Round 4 Report On Wednesday 13 November the Davidson Shield knock out team took on Narara Valley High School in the latest round of the Davidson Shield. Bowling first, we applied good pressure on Narara restricting them to 7/143 after their 35 overs. Pick of the bowlers was Rudrakhya Midya who took 2/16 supported by Mitchell Blow who took 2/14 in his first game for the school. Tisveer Mistry and Joel Herzog also provided good support taking one wicket each.

In reply we started nervously, losing a few wickets but once opening batsman Dash Ratnam settled in, we cruised to the total of 144 in only 25 overs. Dash, also in his first game for the school, complied a brilliant 82 not out, supported by Joel Herzog who scored 40.

The next round is against Homebush Boys High School on 28 November.

CTHS Swimming Carnival 2013

On Wednesday 27 November 2013, the school Swimming Carnival will, once again, be held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. Permission notes have been distributed during roll call and all students are encouraged to return note and money ASAP. It is a great opportunity for all students, whether they be talented athletes or casual swimmers, to experience and swim in a venue that hosted the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games swimming events. The carnival will determine the 2014 Zone Swimming Team, which has had great success in past years. Full participation by all students should enable the school to continue its excellent results at Ku-ring-gai zone level and beyond.

Students are also reminded that if they wish to participate in 200m freestyle and/or 50m butterfly they need to register at the PE office beforehand.
