Dear Parents/Guardians, Teachers & Students, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs Lucy Wells to the position of Acting Assistant Principal Religious Education (APRE), commencing in 2014. Mrs Wells will replace Mrs Linda Gaia who will take leave again in 2014. Lucy is a very successful and experienced educator. Over the past nine years, Lucy has been the APRE at St Clare’s School, Tully. She has nineteen years experience in education as a classroom teacher and a strong commitment to Catholic education. I would like to acknowledge and thank most sincerely Mrs Sarah Payne for her dedication throughout this year as Acting APRE and the past four years as the Year 6/7 classroom teacher. Sarah has been an integral component of our quality 21st Century pedagogy at St John’s. The entire community wish Sarah the best in her future endeavours at St Josephs, Atherton. Next Tuesday, St John’s School and Community Kindergarten Silkwood will conduct our combined Open Morning from 9.00am to 10:30am. Parents interested in enrolling their children will have the opportunity to attend the School and Kindy for the morning. A formal presentation for prospective school parents will provide a brief overview of our school and the prep curriculum. In addition, students in Years 1, 3 & 5 will transition to their respective 2014 classrooms for the morning session. The prospective prep children will be the future school leaders of St John’s in 2020! I am confident that the significant curriculum developments that are presently occurring on a regular basis will promote the children’s achievement of their educational potential at St John’s. Next Monday, teachers will attend the 2013 Consistency of Teacher Judgement day at Good Counsel College in Innisfail. The day will provide teachers with the opportunity to network with other teachers from the Southern Deanery. The moderation process will promote conformity between teacher judgements across the Diocese and ensure that St John’s teachers continue to make accurate comparative judgements about their students’ level of achievement. Black Duck Wisdom by Maggie Dent

7th Wisdom We are all one and can enjoy harmony

and abundance if we cooperate and share openly!

Ducks are quite content to share their world with other creatures. They don’t believe that it just belongs to them or that they are better than others. They simply share the world as it is. Humans sometimes create conflict and disharmony by claiming owners of some suburbs, cities, or even countries. The world belongs to all of us. By embracing diversity and seeking the similarities within others we will create less war, aggression and conflict.

Help for Shy or Anxious Teens and Children: Online Treatment for Social Anxiety is now available! For children and teenagers with Social Anxiety, school can be an incredibly difficult time. Activities like

presenting oral reports, participating in class activities, playing or competing in team sports and joining in with groups can be extremely anxiety provoking situations. But there is help available… and it’s online!

A team of researchers (BRAVE Team) at Griffith University, University of Southern Queensland, and the University of Queensland are seeking children and teenagers (8-17 years) suffering from social anxiety; a fear of being negatively judged by others, or extreme shyness. The BRAVE program aims to help children and their parents learn strategies for managing social anxiety and teach techniques to cope with anxiety-provoking social situations. The treatment program involves between 7-12 online sessions for participants, with each session taking approximately an hour to complete. Families are charged a one-off fee of $120 to assist in covering treatment costs and will also be asked to complete questionnaires and telephone interviews. However, families will receive a rebate of $25 in vouchers each time they complete a post-treatment assessment.

For more information, or to register your interest in the program, please visit the BRAVE ONLINE website: www.exp.psy.uq.edu.au/socialanxiety . Alternatively, you can contact the BRAVE team on (07) 3735 3312 or Email: [email protected]. For further information, pay a visit to our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/braveforanxiety
