Respect, Responsibility, Resilience. Dear Parents/Carers Welcome back to school in Term 4. I hope that everyone had a relaxing break and spent some quality time together as a family. School Uniform Students are now able to wear school Summer uniform. Please ensure that your children bring a jacket to school each day as the weather may continue to be quite cool. Due to the frequent rain, please make sure your child has a raincoat at school. Umbrellas are suitable for older students, however please reinforce with your child the appropriate and safe use of umbrellas, especially in a crowded area. Now is a good time to check that all clothing items are clearly named. Upcoming events Term 4 is always a busy and productive time at school. This term our students will be participating in a range of curricular and extracurricular activities including dance programs, swim school, CARES Road Safety program, leadership day, transition to high school events, surf education, Band Gala Night, school leader elections, 2019 Kindy orientation as well as a number of excursions. Parents are also invited to attend three special presentations during the term: the EAL Café, Maths workshop and Developing Resilience in Children presentation. Please check the newsletter and school website for dates as well as your child’s school bag for notes about all the events that are relevant to your child. We strongly encourage you to attend the parent workshops to gain insights into ways to further support your child at school. Together in partnership, teachers and parents enable our young people to reach their greatest potential and flourish in all aspects of their lives. Safe Parking Last term it was reported by local residents that some parents were parking in an unsafe way, making it difficult for them to access their driveways. It is illegal to park across a driveway or the layback area (the angles sides of the driveway). Parking is not permitted within 20 metres from the crossing on approached and within 10 metres after the crossing. We appreciate your assistance in keeping our community safe and for having consideration of our neighbours. Respect, Responsibility, Resilience.

Mrs Ploeg returns to school this week and I will be taking leave from Wednesday for 2 weeks to enjoy a lovely holiday in Sri Lanka. Helen Paris Relieving Principal Selective High School Last term, Year 5 families received a note in regards to applying for a selective high school in 2020. Please make sure your intention to apply note is returned to school as soon as possible. Information Session An invitation went out today to Year 5 parents inviting them to an information session on the Selective High School process. This session will be held on Tuesday 23 October (Week 2) at 4:00pm in the Library. Please return the slip by this Friday, 19 October, if you wish to attend. Developing Resilience in Children Workshop Today, you will be receiving a note about a free two hour workshop presented by a trained psychologist from the Learning Links organisation. This workshop provides parents with the opportunity to gain knowledge about resilience. The workshop is on Wednesday 7 November from 6:00pm-8:00pm at Oakhill Drive. If you are interested, please return the note by Thursday 25 October. Mrs Marsaus and Mrs Brito Relieving Deputy Principals

Learning at Oakhill Drive This week, I have been visiting classrooms during Maths lessons. In IS, students were revising place value by making the biggest number they could from 2 playing cards, placing the digits in the tens or ones column and representing the number using MAB Base Ten materials. A deep understanding of place value enables us to determine the value of digits, show a number’s relationship to others in the number system and allows us to operate with numbers correctly. In 6C, students were investigating number patterns by determining patterns found in square and triangular numbers and learning how to communicate how these numbers are formed. Students found that they could represent these patterns in different ways and then determined relationships between square and triangular numbers.

Mathematics Masterclass Do you sometimes feel confused about how your children are learning maths? Do the split, jump or compensation strategies seem foreign to you? When should students know their times tables? Due to many parent requests, we will be holding a “Mathematics Masterclass” for parents and carers to learn about how your children are taught Mathematics in order to for you to assist them when they have questions at home.

This will be held in the school lib lab on Thursday 25 October from 5:30pm-6:30pm. Please refer to the information note that has been sent home today and return the RSVP so that we can ensure that we have seating available. Student Attendance It is important that all students arrive promptly at school before the 9:00am bell in order that they have a settled start to the day. Students should be left by their parents/carers under the COLA to minimise safety hazards in congested areas. This also gives all students an opportunity to catch up with their friends. If for any reason, students are dropped at school after 9:00am, parents/carers should obtain a partial absence note from the Student Services window before going to their classroom. Julie Torney Deputy Principal ICAS English Certificates The High Distinction and Distinction certificates for the ICAS English exam will be given out at the K-2 assembly this Thursday 18 October for Year 2 students and at the 3-6 assembly on Thursday 25 October for Year 3-6 students. All other certificates levels were sent home today. Michelle Paterson Organising Teacher EAL Café A reminder that the EAL Café will be held next week, Tuesday 23 October, in the school Lib Lab at 9:00am. All parents, grandparents and friends of EAL students are warmly invited to attend. Nia Poulton and Melissa Dunn EAL Teachers

Scholastic Book Club Our school participates in the Scholastic Book Club. We earn points which we spend on additional resources for the library and for classrooms. Brochures go home each term, and parents are able to decide whether they wish to purchase items from the brochures. Payments can only be made via LOOP online. Please see the brochure for details. Brochures for Issue 7 are going home this week. Orders must be returned to school by Friday 26 October. Please help your child to choose wisely, as I cannot vouch for the quality of some of the non-book items offered by Scholastic Australia. Miss Lee (3G Teacher) Book Club Organiser

Representative Sport A huge congratulations to Sophie B (6W) who represented Oakhill Drive Public School at the NSW PSSA Girls’ Softball Championships late last term.
