CAPTAINS VISIT TO NSW PARLIAMENT HOUSE On Tuesday 21 August, our school captains Lulu R and Gethan H, our vice captains Polly H and Ale B along with Mrs Smith were invited to attend morning tea with the Hon Brad Hazzard (NSW Minister for Health) at the NSW Parliament House. We enjoyed a great day out starting with a relaxing ferry ride from Manly to Circular Quay, followed by a casual stroll through the Conservatorium of Music gardens before arriving at the historic Parliament House.

We were soon escorted into the meeting room where we mingled with other captains, vice captains and had a great conversation with Mr Hazzard. Our captains represented our community well asking the hard questions about the completion of the new hospital (Mr Hazzard informed us it is still on track to open later this year) and the state of the roads surrounding the hospital (he is equally as frustrated as we all are but said they won’t be finished until 2020!). He

was delighted to see Lulu again as he and Lulu’s dad have been mates since they were 15 years old! Mr Hazzard also reminisced about his days playing soccer and was very interested to hear our captains’ sporting stories. They provided an amazing spread for morning tea which was a selection of gourmet sausage rolls and pies, fancy sandwiches, chocolate cake and juice...Delicious!! Our next stop was a tour of the Legislative Assembly (the green room) where we were taught the history of NSW parliament and the leaders had the chance to ask and answer questions. We were presented with a certificate of recognition and reminded of the different qualities that make up a great leader.

To wrap up our time in Parliament House, we went into the Legislative Council (the red room). We were told more about the history of the building, how it was built and got to see the special chair which is strictly only for the Queen or her royal representatives when they visit. We finished off our fabulous day with some fish and chips which we enjoyed on our ferry ride back to Manly. We arrived back to school in time for a lovely afternoon of learning.

I was very proud of how our captains represented Wheeler Heights and thoroughly enjoyed my day out with them! Mrs Smith Assistant Principal WHITE BALLOON DAY & NATIONAL CHILD PROTECTION WEEK

Next week the school will be supporting White Balloon Day as part of National Child Protection Week (2-8 September). White Balloon Day is Australia’s largest awareness campaign dedicated to preventing child sexual assault. Child safety is an important and regular component of all the school’s PDHPE programs. To support White Balloon Day and National Child Protection Week all teachers will discuss personal safety with students. Please also take the opportunity to talk to your children about child safety. Every child has a right to feel safe and everyone has a responsibility to care for children and help them to stay safe. Parents can access more information about child personal safety from the Bravehearts website: https://bravehearts.org.au/personalsafety Miss Earl SRC Coordinator

BOOK WEEK 2018 Students celebrated Book Week by dressing as their favourite book character: Harry Potter, the Kaboom Kid, The Cat in the Hat, The Lorax, Pippi Longstocking, princesses, Paddington Bear, the world’s worst children from David Walliam’s books, Greg from

Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox, Billy B Brown characters, Mr Men and Little Miss characters, Tiny Timmy and favourite sport characters.

There were wonderful pirates, Thelma the Unicorn and even the Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly. Oh my!

It was a fantastic day and special thanks to Year 6 who paraded with their Kindergarten buddies.

There was only one problem – we lost Wally! If you find him please call 000.

LIBRARY NEWS Thank you to all the parents and Grandparents who kindly donated a new Book to our school library during Open Day. They will be processed over the next couple of weeks for your child to be the first to borrow. Author visit - Aura Parker Years K-2 were also very lucky during Book Week to have author Aura Parker visit. Aura has written and illustrated the book titled “Twig” and illustrated “My Magnificent Jelly Bean Tree”. Aura brought in her pet Stick Insects for the students to see where she got the inspiration for her story from, and some students even got to have a hold – although some were a little hesitant! Aura also gave a drawing demonstration to the students; and who knew we had so many budding artists here at Wheeler Heights. Premier’s Reading Challenge All entries must be completed online by Friday 31 August 2018. If the challenge has been completed online, your child will receive a special certificate from the Premier before the end of the school year. Happy Reading! TALENT QUESTS 2018 Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2 students), should begin practising their act for this year’s talent quest. It is to be held in Week 9, Monday 17 September, at lunch time. Next Monday we will call for students who are interested in performing their practised act, to visit my classroom at recess. Linda Williamson Y6 teacher/Convenor WHPS SKIP-A-THON 2018 The Wheeler Heights Public School community took part in an epic skipping challenge on Wednesday. With the oval baked in sunshine and our hearts full of joy, our pupils, teachers and even some parents happily skipped for just over 30 minutes. The intensive training over the last few weeks really shone through and whether we were able to jump successfully over the rope or not, our smiles were ever present. The number of sponsors so far has been incredibly impressive and we encourage everyone to keep striving to raise money so we can upgrade our playground and technology equipment. Remember, the children who manage to raise the most money will receive awesome prizes. Congratulations on an incredible effort everyone!

BALLROOM DANCING Our Year 5 students have been tweaking their moves in the ballroom dancing program and will soon be demonstrating their talents to parents on September 5 in the hall, starting at 9:15am. Furthermore, some selected students will be performing at The Dancesport Confidence Gala Event at Homebush on September 10. If you have any questions please contact Mrs Sullivan or Mr Bennett.

PITTWATER ZONE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL All children who are participating in the Pittwater Zone Athletics Carnival on Monday 3 September should have returned their notes to Mrs Radom (team manager). There will also be an optional training session for the selected athletes on Friday 31 August (track events including relays) from 8:15 – 9:00am on the oval with Mr Bennett and Mr James. We encourage everyone to attend, especially the relay runners so that we can work on baton changes. PSSA AUTUMN/WINTER COMPETITION

Last week we played our rearranged fixtures against Collaroy Plateau. That concluded our regular season. A huge thank you to the coaches of all the teams who give up additional time every week to run training sessions, the parents who come to support our teams and the pupils who have represented our school in a highly positive manner. We are also excited that some of our teams have made finals. Both Boys soccer teams and both AFL teams have qualified. The location of their fixtures for the semi finals are below. SUSTAINABILITY NEWS

WHPS has some very exciting news – from next week we are aiming to have zero landfill by introducing soft plastic recycling bins! Our new bins will have black lids for anything that is plastic and can be scrunched into a ball. This includes but is not limited to:

• Chip packets • Muesli bar wrappers • Cling wrap • Ziplock bags • Plastic bags

This will mean that hopefully only straws, coffee cups (without lids) and meat/cheese goes into the landfill bins. Please help us by discussing regularly with your child what bins their recess and lunch waste can go in. We would like to sincerely thank all parent volunteers who have offered to help with the deposit of the soft plastics – you are truly appreciated! We will also have these paper recycling bins in designated areas for any students with cardboard or coloured paper. Keep an eye out for these new additions next week!

In other news, I wish to congratulate Alana C (5S) and Ruby L (2J) for receiving our Sustainability Leader of the Month award for the month of August! These two leaders have gone above and beyond to show dedication to our sustainability initiatives at school. They reliably do their duties and always help others to do the right thing. Keep up the great work girls! Mrs Alexander Sustainability and ECO Coordinator

STAGE 2 EXCURSION Taronga Zoo On Tuesday August 28, Stage 2 went on an excursion to Taronga Zoo to supplement the work they have been completing in their geography unit Places are Similar and Different. The excursion included a workshop where students compared how Australia is alike and different to Indonesia. They explored both countries’ climate, infrastructure and even animals, in which they were allowed to pet different animals! Students took a quick flight into the Sumatran Tiger Trek and imagined what it would be like living in Sumatra. They finished the day exploring other enclosures. Stage 2 teachers would like to say a special thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped on the day! Mrs Alexander and Stage 2 teachers

The Annual Trivia Night is Coming Soon! Television Shows

Saturday November 10

Our biggest fundraiser for the school year is just around the corner and we need your help to make it amazing. This year the monies raised will be going to a variety of upgrades to the school grounds, new readers, iPads, Solar Panels and so much more.

What can you do to help you ask?

It’s great when our school community owned businesses get involved by either donating a prize or sponsoring a table. We like to offer our school families the first opportunity for sponsorship. However, if this isn’t possible all you need to do is think of someone you know who can donate something for the night – vouchers, gifts, services, in fact we can pretty much use anything to raise money to help make our school even better than it already is. If you own your own business or know of someone who does we are also offering “naming rights” for tables which, for a small fee ($200.00 tax deductible) is a great way of getting your business name out there. All businesses that make a contribution receive acknowledgement in the school newsletter, logo inclusion on the night’s slide show, mentions on the night and ability to distribute merchandise and business cards. Silent Auction prizes are another must for any fundraising event. Sporting memorabilia, hotels, trips, tours and pretty much anything with substantial value that will make the attendees spend up big on the night. There are plenty of very talented people in our school community and we would love it if you could turn your hand to making something for us to use at the silent or live auction or as a prop on the night. Please let us know. Last year we received a great response from our school community businesses and we’re sure we can do the same this year. If you have any questions or want to donate or help the committee please call Sherene LaGasse 0427 174472 or email [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name ________________________________________Phone number_________________________________________ Donation____________________________________________________ Value____________________
