Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to Week 7 newsletter. Thank you to all who supported our P and C Trivia night
on the weekend. The evening was a great success and the MLSS Teachers table claimed
first place! Our Interact club has also had a successful week after their fundraisers on
Friday with many of our students enjoying the free dress day and BBQ. We would like to
thank all our Father’s this week for all they do ahead of Father’s day this weekend. We
hope you have a wonderful weekend with your families and enjoy your gifts.
Please remember families, every day counts! Going to school is a legal requirement.
Under the law, you must make sure your child is enrolled and attends school on ALL
school days unless you have a reasonable excuse. You must not keep your child away
from school for minor reasons. Student attendance this week was 91% .
Would you please note if your child will be absent from school, we would appreciate you
contacting the office by 9.30 a.m. so that we can record their absence.

Children could be asked any of the following questions
when they have finished reading a book.
Did you enjoy the book? Why?
How did you choose it?
Who were the characters? Which was your favourite and can you de-
scribe them?
How long did it take you to read?
Could you make a better ending?

Visual Art with Mrs Rothe...
This term our Visual Art class has been studying Pop Art and how popular culture influences art. During our
studies we have looked at the work of Andy Warhol and appropriated some of his work; namely can designs
and celebrity portraits. Students had the opportunity to design their own soft drink label and give their best
pitch to the class. We have enjoyed transforming our favourite celebrity portraits into Pop Art too. It has been
excellent to see the creativity of our students and the engagement they have in the learning of this subject.
We look forward to creating a Pop Art Self-Portrait as our assessment piece for this term.
Secondary School Parade Friday, 23 August, 2019
Congratulations to Kayla and Emma who received “Student of the
Week” awards on Parade. Keep up the great work!
Congratulations to Charlotte and Chloe on being finalists in
the Queensland School Poetry & Song Competition recently
held in Brisbane.

Primary Student Council...
The Primary Student Council have put their thinking caps on this term and have
come up with some fantastic ideas. These include a Crazy Hair day and a Sausage
Sizzle. We are working together to come up with some dates for these exciting days.
Interact Rotary Luncheon…
Wednesday, August 28, our Mt Larcom Secondary Depart-
ment Interact Club were invited to lunch with our sponsor
Rotary Club, the Midday Rotary Club, in Gladstone. We
were made welcome by the club members and introduced
personally by Mrs Gail Sellers, who helps us at all of our
fortnightly meetings. After sharing a beautiful lunch at the
Gladstone Bowls Club, Kayla, our president presented a
brief report on our goals, activities and fund raising efforts.
Freaky Friday wrap up…
Thank you to all our students who participated in the Interact fundraisers last week. It was a great
day full of fun costumes and BBQ lunch. Total funds raised were $109.00! Well done everyone.

Road Safety Week...
This week is Road Safety week! After hearing from our local policeman Senior Constable Lipke to help
promote safe driving and use of the road the primary school students created posters for the Mount
Larcom Puma Service Station. The posters were displayed for passing drivers as a reminder to always
stay vigilant and safe on our roads.

P and C Trivia Night….
The evening was a huge success. We made $1200 profit. At the same time a local busi-
ness was also supported. We would like to thank everyone who supported us as well as
the Mt Larcom Royal Hotel for their support. Thank you Jess Murdoch for helping get
donations as well as Kym McCabe for donating the slab of wood and Kymberley Powell
for the beautiful hand made Dream catcher. A huge shout out to all our sponsors being
Bendigo bank, Cement Australia, Penguine Random House, Dicey's Bar, Dan Murphy's,
Gladstone camping centre, Tackle world, Price Line Chemist, Calliope Roosters, Glad-
stone Central News Agency, Bunnings, Office works, Australia zoo, Spirit of Hervey bay
whale watching, Poppy and Rose Photography, Naturally SAS hair and beauty, Nails
now, Birds nest, Party Lite and 4cc Radio. We couldn't have done this without you. Last-
ly....A huge congratulations to our teachers taking 1st place!!
Performing Arts with Mrs Rothe...
The Performing Arts class have been learning about improvisation and competing in some Theatre Sports games. The
experience of The Scene Project and the improvisational activities in class have enabled students to grow as performers.
I am most impressed with the students’ ability to develop entertaining and engaging characters and scenarios.
Students have also been set the challenge of reviewing one of the live theatre performances they have attended this
term; The Shot or The Young King. Writing a review is a great opportunity for students to critique the work of profession-
als in order to learn and develop as young performers. I encourage students to attend as much live theatre as they can
and support the local performing artists. Queensland Theatre will be performing The Longest Minute at the GECC on
Sunday 13th October. For more information please visit: https://gladstoneentertainment.com/event/the-longest-minute/
Science...
In Year 7, Abi has gone above
and beyond with her science
studies! She has created a 3D
model of our solar system at
home out of styrofoam balls,
skewers and paints. It is great
to see students taking learn-
ing into their own hands and
getting creative. Well done,
Abi!

Roosters reign supreme…
Over the weekend students Jake Brown, Jai
Branford and Alex Lillyman participated in their
Grand Final for the Calliope Junior Roosters Rug-
by League. Coached by Mr Embry, the boys
played a hard fought match to win back to back
premierships! Congratulations on your result
and demonstrating high levels of sportsman-
ship.
Greenhouse construction…
Students continued construction of the new greenhouse in their Agricultural Studies this week with
the assistance of our new grounds keeper Ms Sutton and Mr Hannet. We have also welcomed some
new members to MLSS with 8 new lambs safely arriving this week.
Queensland Secondary State Bowls
Championships…
This week Bailey Maynard and Billy Masters
have been competing in the QLD Secondary
State Bowls Championships. They have com-
peted at a high level and had some very close
games. So far the boys have won 1 from 4
with competition to continue today. Good luck
for the rest of the competition!

Primary years 3-6 Camp
Our primary school camp is currently being planned and is a packed 3 days and 2 nights of activi-
ties at Capricorn Caves and Cooberie Park Wildlife Sanctuary. The Itinerary is currently being written
and the students have an action packed few days ahead of them. Keep up your fund raising efforts,
as a percentage of all that you are able to raise goes directly to your camp fund, so these fund rais-
ing efforts directly benefit your child. The Camp will take place from Wednesday November 20 and
students will return to school on Friday November 22. Contributions to your child’s camp fund can
be made through the school office at any time, the school is trying to give parents plenty of notice
to assist in managing this cost.
Cadbury School Fundraiser With our students, families and the community continuing to support our Cadbury School Fundrais-
er we have now extended sales until September. Boxes are still available however they continue to
move quickly so don’t miss out!
