PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE NERAM Lets Hang it! Winner

Newling was very pleased to have two finalists on display at the NERAM Lets Hang It! art competition. Domonic and Nathan had their artworks selected as finalists and were very proud to see their work framed and on display for the public at NERAM. On Friday evening at a presentation ceremony the winners were announced in the packed Art Gallery. Nathan was awarded the People’s Choice Award for his entry. This is a wonderful accomplishment and we congratulate Nathan on this achievement. Gathering

This Friday our 3/4 class will host our first Gathering of

the term. Each class receives the chance to host just

one Gathering each term. It is fantastic that our

students run the assembly to get the experience of

public speaking and have the opportunity to get on

stage to show the school community some of their

talent and work each term.

Gatherings always start at 2:00pm in the Hall and are

usually brief, about 20 mins in length.

We look forward to seeing many parents and friends

present to support their children in 3/4 class at our

Gathering.

Breakfast Club

Our Breakfast Club service is very popular among our

students and the great majority make use of this most

days. Our team of volunteers do a great job preparing

and serving the food for our students each day.

On some mornings however we do not have sufficient

volunteers to run Breakfast Club so it should not be

relied on every day as the only source of breakfast. It is

a supplementary service for all of our students who

arrive early or would like some extra nourishment in

the mornings.

Student Mentoring

This week we have a new group of mentors starting at

our school who will visit a student each week and

provide one to one assistance with school to that child.

This is through the Red Cross Kids Hope Australia

program and a partnership with the Armidale City

Church.

Newling started this mentoring program this year and

we have now grown to have established the second

largest mentoring program in Australia – all in our first

year!

We now have 13 mentors that spend one hour with a

student each week that is focused only on that

student to help them be the most successful they can

be at school and enhance their capacity to learn.

Star Awards

“You’re a Star Award” certificates are normally

presented at the morning assembly to students who

have been using the You Can Do It keys to success and

demonstrating persistence, resilience, organisation,

getting along and confidence.

This week unbelievably none of our students

completed their star chart, even though many have

been rewarded with keys during the week!

The ‘Students of the Week ‘will enjoy the Star Room

all to themselves.

- Focus of the Week

Taking Turns

Taking turns is such an important social skill to master. We use it in

everyday conversations, while waiting at the shops,

when playing games and in class.

Kids always pay attention to how adults act or what we do and say.

Show your child how you are taking turns when holding a conversation with someone or while

playing a game.

Library News

Term 3 is an exciting time in the Library. Week 5 will see many Book Week activities which include our much loved annual Book Fair in the Library Annex. Perhaps your child could start doing some helpful jobs at home to earn some money and save to buy a book. This year Book Week activities will take place within each of the classrooms and follow this year's theme of 'Find your treasure' in books. We look forward to hosting parents and visitors to see what children have been working on. More news to come closer to the time. A reminder that each child has a specific Library day but are also welcome to visit the Library during 2nd half lunch, from Monday -Thursday, to return or borrow from our terrific collection.
