Dear Parents and Friends, Welcome back to Term Three. I hope you all had an enjoyable break spending time together as a family. This term is 10 weeks in duration and looks like another busy term with many events happening throughout. Some things to look forward to include: Challenge Cup, Catholic Education Week, MacKillop Feast Day and Dance Fever just to name a few. This term each year level will be learning the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum program. Please see information below:

DANIEL MORCOMBE CHILD SAFETY CURRICULUM

The Department of Education and Training, in partnership with the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, has developed the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum for Queensland students. The Curriculum consists of classroom lessons across three phases of learning: Prep-Year 2, Years 3-6 and Years 7-9.

The Curriculum is aligned with the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education and is now available to all Australian teachers. It aims to teach children about personal safety and awareness, including cybersafety and phone safety, by focusing on three key safety messages: Recognise, React and Report.

The Curriculum was developed in consultation with Bruce and Denise Morcombe, the Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian and representatives from the Department of Education, Training and Employment, Queensland Police Service, and the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, as well as experts in child safety education.

At MacKillop we will be teaching this program during Term Three. Each class will be involved in one lesson a week over 9 weeks. During one of these lessons the students will be involved in learning about the anatomical names for the private parts of the body. We will be holding a Parent Information Session next Monday 18

th July at 3.15pm in the library to explain this curriculum and what will be taught in more

detail. Babysitting will be provided. For those parents who cannot attend we will endeavour to send home further information through notes and the newsletter. It would be great if you could follow up on the content at home as well.

WEEK 2

WELCOME

We welcome one university student undertaking their student placement at MacKillop this term. Welcome to Megan Antcliff in Year 3CM. This student is from CQU and will be commencing one day per week for this term, followed by a two week practical block next term. We hope you enjoy your time at MacKillop.

SAFETY

When entering or exiting our MacKillop driveways, please remember to give way to pedestrians using the footpaths along Nadarmi Drive. This has recently been highlighted as a safety issue by members of the public.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Stephanie Aquilina and Micheal Bray on the birth of their son Jonah who was born on the 1

st July. Jonah is

a brother for Maitland (Prep), Jasper and Matilda.

CHALLENGE CUP Good luck to our Challenge Cup Netball and Rugby League teams who will travel to Yeppoon today for a three day carnival competing against other Catholic Schools from our Diocese. Our coach for the netball team Mrs Christine Newland, has done a fantastic job preparing the team and we wish them all the best. We are combining with St Joseph’s for our Rugby League team. Best of luck! I will be attending the carnival on Wednesday and Thursday and Christine Newland will attend for the three days.

WHITSUNDAY VOICES

This Thursday and Friday some classes will be attending Whitsunday Voices. Year 3 will be attending a presentation by Lucas Proudfoot on Friday 14

th July, Year 5 will be

attending a presentation titled ‘Shake and Stir’ on Thursday 13

th July, and Year 6 will attend a presentation by Lucas

Proudfoot on Thursday 13th

July. The costs for these presentations will be charged to your Term Three school fee accounts. We hope the children enjoy these performances and find it a worthwhile experience to hear authors talk about their writing.

CUMBERLAND ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Congratulations to all those students who have been selected to represent MacKillop at the Cumberland Athletics Carnival next Thursday 20

th July. Remember to work together,

participate and have a go.

DANCEFEVER LESSONS

DanceFever lessons commenced this week and will continue every Tuesday this term for a total of ten weeks. There will NOT be a DanceFever Challenge this year but the children will

get the opportunity to perform their dances for parents towards the end of the term. This program is compulsory for all students to participate in. The cost for DanceFever is $35 per child for the term and will be included in Term Three school fees accounts as outlined in the newsletter last term.

TERM THREE CALENDAR Please find attached to the newsletter today a calendar for Term Three that outlines some dates of events and happenings for this term. You may like to stick this to your fridge or in a safe place to refer back to as required. Please remember to also check the ‘Coming Events’ section in the newsletter for other dates that may be added as the term progresses.

SCHOOL LEADERS TERM THREE

We take this opportunity to thank both Charlee Durnsford and Logan Atkinson for the wonderful way they have represented MacKillop this term as School Leaders. Both children have set a good example to their peers and have served the community in their leadership duties well. We are very proud of you both and thank you for your diligence and effort on our behalf as a school.

I am now very proud to announce and congratulate our two new School Leaders for Term Three – Summer O’Neill and Rory Barrie. We’re very proud of the student’s election from among their peers and school members and we look forward to Summer and Rory’s contributions to our school life. The induction ceremony was held Monday on Assembly.

PREP ENROLMENTS 2018 Enrolments for Prep for 2018 are now being taken. If you have a child due to commence Prep next year (born between 1 July 2012 and 30 June 2013), please complete an enrolment form available from the office or on our website. Enrolments for Years 1 - 6 are also currently being taken for 2018. When returning the enrolment form, please ensure you provide either the original birth certificate or a certified copy, the baptismal certificate and immunisation records. It is essential that we have our current families accounted for so that we know the number of places available for new families.

NEW FEDERAL FUNDING MODEL The Federal Government has now passed legislation to implement a new model for school funding from 2018 to 2027. The Federal Government has made changes to its model to address some of the concerns of the Catholic sector including providing increased transitional funding to assist us to adjust to the new funding regime. The Government has also agreed to a review of the highly significant Socio-Economic Status (SES) and Capacity to Contribute elements of the funding model. The Catholic sector has been calling for this review for some time as it was one of the recommendations of the original Gonski report. We are pleased that the Government will now examine the suitability of the current system and seek improvements. Some key elements of the funding package also include:

Schools transitioning upwards to meet their Schooling

Resource Standard (SRS) target will have their

funding increased to the required level over six years

(meaning they will attract more funding, sooner). The

SRS is a key part of the new needs-based funding

model which takes into account the circumstances of

students, schools and systems in deciding how

funding is allocated;

Schools currently funded above their SRS will have

their funding reduced over 10 years (meaning that,

although they will attract less funding, this transition

will still occur over 10 years).

The System Weighted Average through which the

SES for all Queensland Catholic schools was

averaged and funding allocated based on the average

has been abandoned. However, over the next 12

months Queensland Catholic schools will receive an

estimated $7.5 million in transition funds to assist in

the first year of transition away from the System

Weighted Average.

A new National School Resourcing Board will be

established to oversee the distribution of funds and to

review funding levels and other matters. Its powers

and composition have not yet been outlined in detail.

We will continue to keep you updated as further discussions with the Federal Education Department take place and we gain a greater understanding of the details of the legislation.

NAIDOC theme for 2017 is

‘Our Languages Matter’

The importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages will be the focus of national celebrations marking NAIDOC Week 2017. The 2017 theme - Our Languages Matter - aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

Some 250 distinct Indigenous language groups covered the continent at first (significant) European contact in the late eighteenth century. Most of these languages would have had several dialects, so that the total number of named varieties would have run to many hundreds.

Today only around 120 of those languages are still spoken and many are at risk of being lost as Elders pass on.

National NAIDOC Committee Co-Chair Anne Martin said languages are the breath of life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the theme will raise awareness of the status and importance of Indigenous languages across the country.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait languages are not just a means of communication, they express knowledge about everything: law, geography, history, family and human relationships, philosophy, religion, anatomy, childcare, health, caring for country, astronomy, biology and food.

“Each language is associated with an area of land and has a deep spiritual significance and it is through their own languages, that Indigenous nations maintain their connection with their ancestors, land and law,” Ms Martin said.

Committee Co-Chair Benjamin Mitchell hopes that the theme will shine a spotlight on the programs and community groups working to preserve, revitalise or record Indigenous languages, and encourage all Australians to notice the use of Indigenous languages in their community.

“There is currently a wave of activity, with people in many communities working to learn more about their language, and to ensure they are passed on to the next generation before it is too late.’ Mr Mitchell said.

“Nationally, many place names for our suburbs, rivers, mountains and parks are Indigenous language words. Noticing and paying attention to these words will generate greater appreciation and respect for the significance of language among all Australians.

"The preservation and revitalisation of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages - the original languages of this nation - is the preservation of priceless treasure, not just for Indigenous peoples, but for everyone." www.naidoc.org.au

Next Monday morning several school representatives will attend the Regional NAIDOC Mass at St. Joseph’s Church.

MacKillop is celebrating this important time at next Friday’s Assembly led by Year 3CM.

Michael Mangan is a composer, teacher and music liturgist

who has composed over 250 pieces which are widely used in Liturgy and Religious Education programmes in schools and parishes throughout Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. His compositions are known for their "singability" and suitability for liturgical celebrations, especially with children. Many of Michael’s songs are used in our Masses and Liturgical Celebrations, and Michael will be visiting MacKillop next Tuesday to work and sing with our students.

Please pray for all those who continue their preparation for the Sacraments.

MUSICORP INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM

Our instrumental music students have been working incredibly hard the last few months. Everyone completed their semester 1 assessments and performed wonderfully at our concert. A special mention to Cody Hamilton for his guitar performace of 'Another Dime' and Khiana Blakey for her rendition of 'Star of the County Down' on the violin, fantastic playing, well done!
