Special thanks to Band Directors Kinsey and Anthony who have prepared the band so well. This Sunday another four bands will be performing at Pittwater HS. We had another very well attended P&C Meeting last Monday. Thank you again to our wonderful president Natalie Cook and the many parents who give up their time to support our school. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. The next big school fundraising event is the COLOUR RUN on Thursday 15 August! More details very soon. Staffing News Next term we welcome back Mrs Louise Seagar to our Learning and Support Team. Mrs Nicole Marshall will continue one day per week with Learning Support and will teach 4R two days per week. Consequently, Mr Greg Webster who has done such a wonderful job on 4R each Friday this semester will finish at the end of this term. Once again, we thank Mr Webster for being such a tremendous teacher, mentor and role model for the boys, girls and staff at our school. Super Hoot Morning Teas Students who have received 25 Super Hoot awards, that is five Principal stickers, will be eligible for the special morning tea in Week 10. Boys and girls will receive their invitation letter next week. The K-2 event will be on Thursday 4 July from 10.45am and the Years 3-5 event will be on Friday 5 July at 11am. The Year 6 morning tea will be held next term due to the school camp. School Flag Each day our Year 6 students put up and down the Australian flag. Last week the flag was twice at half mast. On Wednesday for Les Murray, a famous Australian poet and on Friday when Bob Hawke, a former prime minister was honoured. When talking with the school leaders Heath McL and Thomas J who were putting up the flag, I was most impressed that they were very aware of the significant roles which these two Australians had played. Well done to the Year 6 teachers and students for being so knowledgeable about important current affairs. Student Reports As Mrs Wright and I have been mentioning in recent newsletters, we will not be sending home hard copies of reports this semester. All school reports will be emailed. This week you all should have received an email and a message (through Flexischools, the school app) to check/confirm your correct email address. We do expect that there will be a few issues with the emailing process this semester and ask that you are patient as we trial this new system. We expect to email the reports to parents in Week 10. The exact date is yet to be confirmed. End of Year dates We are currently finalising a number of dates for the rest of the school year and these will be in next week's newsletter. Many parents ask us for future dates so that they can plan holidays or other activities. Occasionally some events do come up quite unexpectedly or teams/groups qualify for finals and extra opportunities. In these cases, it is often not possible to give much notice. Obviously, we expect children to attend school each and every day and if this is the case then you will be assured of not missing any important school activity. Mrs Wright’s Wrap Up

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR COURAGEOUS AND SPECTACULAR PUBLIC SPEAKERS Imogen L and Alana C represented our school and competed in the local area final of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition at Manly Vale Public School on Monday. Both girls did an amazing job of delivering their prepared speeches. Alana’s chosen topic was ‘It’s complicated’ and Imogen spoke about ‘Learning from the past’. These talented girls dedicated a great deal of time rehearsing their speeches at home and should both be very proud of themselves. They had a very difficult task in undertaking the impromptu component of the competition. ‘Challenge’ was the topic which is very broad and being given only 5 minutes to prepare, made these impromptu speeches a massive task. Having spent time working through planning strategies with Miss Smithies at school and spending more time at home the girls were very prepared. Again, they tackled the task with maturity and delivered excellent speeches. We are very proud of both of them. Imogen received a Highly Commended certificate which is a wonderful achievement at such a high standard of competition. Congratulations Imogen and Alana! Everett M and Laura H, our Stage 2 finalists, will compete at Collaroy Plateau Public School on Wednesday 3 July.

PCS ABORIGINAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE – “VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH” ART EXHIBITION

The Peninsula CommUNITY of Schools ‘Voice. Treaty. Truth.’ Art Exhibition will open tonight and will remain at Warriewood Square for ten days. The exhibition was set up last night and it looks absolutely amazing. The artworks included are incredible. There is a display of inspirational works completed by students from Kindergarten to Year 12 across our 15 Peninsula Community of Schools. On the following page you will find an invitation to the official opening of the art exhibition. We had many students, teachers and their families attend this event last year and all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. You cannot help but be moved by the artworks and the ideas and thoughts behind them. The talent of public school students in our area is quite extraordinary! Do yourself a favour and join us for this remarkable event! GOT IT! PROGRAM

Getting on Track in Time (Got It!) is an exciting school-based early intervention program supporting children in their social and emotional development. It is a joint initiative between NSW Health and NSW Department of Education. The Got It! program will be implemented at Wheeler Heights Public School in Terms 3 & 4, 2019. Last week, all parents who have children in Kindergarten to Year 2 were sent information regarding the program and have been asked to complete a screening questionnaire to help identify children who may be suitable for the program, and to help evaluate the effectiveness of the Got It! program at our school. Then, earlier this week, further information explaining the program was sent home. The GOT IT! Team provided further information at our P&C meeting held on Monday 17 June.

REPORTS

As you know, this year we will be emailing reports rather than sending home printed copies. On Tuesday, an email was sent as a test to ensure we have the correct email address for parents of each student. A push notification was also sent through the Flexischools app advising this email had been sent.

If you received the email to the address you would like your child’s report sent to, there is nothing you need to do. If you did not receive the email or would like to change your email address please advise the office in writing by no later than Tuesday 25 June.

As with any new system, there may be some teething issues. If throughout this process there is an issue relating to you receiving your child's report, please advise us as soon as possible so we can rectify any problems quickly.

Thank you for your support and understanding throughout this process. Mrs Priscilla Wright Assistant Principal, Instructional Leader

CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING (CCT) UPDATE The development of critical and creative thinking skills requires knowledge and practise. As a result, students are participating in a whole school CCT program. Week 9: Ubiquitous Learner What is ubiquitous learning?

This means that you learn anytime and anywhere (not just in the classroom). To support their learning try to find opportunities to reinforce this trait in your child at home. Ask your child: Were you a ubiquitous learner this week? (Example: What did you learn when you watched that movie or TV show? Did you learn anything interesting when you read that book? What did you learn when you were building Lego or a cubby house with your friend?)

CCT Crunch of the Week – Sketch your Imagination Ask a family member to draw random squiggles. Add lines, shapes and details to the squiggles to make one detailed picture that tells a story. Parents, you may want to show a video of Mr Squiggle as inspiration for this activity. Happy drawing. Miss Earl for the CCT Team YEAR 6 CAMP Students from our school will soon be undertaking (or have recently undertaken), an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Miss Tekampe Camp Coordinator

WHEELER HEIGHTS DANCE PROGRAM

The Sydney North Dance Festival dates at Glen Street are coming up next week! On Monday 24 June both groups will attend a dress rehearsal during school time and will perform in the 7:30pm evening performance, please arrive by 7:00pm. On Wednesday 26 June, they will perform in the 5:00pm evening show, please arrive by 4:30pm.

For the dress rehearsal on Monday, dancers need to bring their costumes, jazz shoes and makeup. Please come to school with hair done and we will do makeup before we leave school. If you are away for any period of time please advise us now as stage positioning is extremely important. It is also very important as performances are approaching that children attend all classes. For absences please email the school or the dance committee - [email protected] If you are interested in being on the dance committee for the 2019/2020 dance season, please forward your details to the school dance email. KNOCKOUT TEAMS Congratulations to our Boys Basketball team who played gallantly against a very competitive Oakhill Drive on Tuesday. Unfortunately, they lost the game, however Miss Bamford and the other coach were extremely impressed with how well the boys played.

Mr James and the Boys Soccer team played Neutral Bay today. Stay tuned for more information about this match next week.

All our State Cup teams have represented our school with great sportsmanship and should be very proud of their efforts.

It would assist us in the delivery of messages about healthy eating if the children bring a healthy and nutritious lunch to Vacation Care and avoid snack foods which are high in fat and sugar. We suggest a sandwich, cheese, fruit and veggie sticks, crackers, yoghurt and water to drink. Please see our LUNCHBOX Fact Sheet for suggestions.

On days designated as “Wheels Day” or where personal riding equipment (bikes, scooters, skateboards etc.) is brought on a day, parents are to provide safety gear

that they deem sufficient to ensure their child/ren’s safety. This also includes the provision of clothing and footwear suitable to the day.

On days designated as a “Water themed” day parents are to provide their child/ren with clothing and footwear appropriate to the engagement of water based

activities, as well as any additional requests as outlined in the description.
