Recently, a note went home to all parents and carers regarding the upcoming Nationally Consistent Collection
of Data concerning students who have a ‘disability’. The term ‘disability’ can be a confronting one. To clarify,
the definition of disability, in this instance, is in reference to the different ways individuals may learn or
process information due to their personal circumstances. In essence, the term disability refers to the learning
differences within our school population. The national data collection on students with disability (NCCD) is
based on the professional judgement of teachers about their students. The model underpinning the data
collection reflects the work of schools in supporting their students in accordance with obligations under the
Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and Disability Standards for Education 2005.
Schools will record information annually about:
the number of students receiving an adjustment for disability as defined in the DDA and the Disability Standards for Education
the level of adjustment each student is receiving
the broad category of disability of each student.
Students being provided with an adjustment for disability are included in the annual data collection where there is documented evidence held by the school that:
the adjustment is provided for a minimum of 10 weeks or a term
the adjustment is based on the assessed educational needs of individual students
the adjustment is provided in consultation with the student and/or their parents and carers
the impact of the adjustment is monitored.
The model for the national data collection reflects and supports the ongoing work of schools throughout the year in meeting the educational needs of every student. Schools that have already participated in the national data collection report that the model directly benefits students and teachers through an increased focus on learning and support processes in the school. If you have any questions regarding this upcoming collection of data please contact the school for further clarification.
We congratulate Jack and Riley Gould who competed in the Highlands PSSA Zone Cross Country at Gundagai on Thursday 22 May 2014. Jack won the 11 years Boys 3 km event and Riley won the 8/9 years Boys 2 km event. This is a tremendous achievement given that Riley was competing against boys a year older. The Gould boys now head to Deniliquin on Tuesday 10 June 2014 for the Regional PSSA Cross Country. Jack and Riley hope to qualify for the Regional team. Batlow Technology School wishes the boys the best of luck for their upcoming event.
On Tuesday 27 May 2014, students from Year 3 to College II had the opportunity to meet the Governor of New South Wales, Marie Bashir. Governor Bashir was warm and gracious and keen to mingle with all who attended the Batlow Literary Institute. Despite the hostile weather, the event was a huge success. Our students were incredibly well behaved, polite and respectful to Her Excellency. I would like to commend the students who attended the event for being such fine ambassadors and representing our school in such a dignified way. I would also like to thank Mrs Michelle Wainwright for being part of the catering team who fed and watered, with style, the 150 plus crowd. Well done to all involved.
Last Thursday, Year 10 students participated in the Lizzie Wagner Professional Presentation workshop at the Tumbarumba Community Church as part of a series of Career Planning opportunities. Students learnt how to carry themselves with poise and grace when attending ‘social’ and professional functions, appropriate grooming strategies (including skin care and makeup application for our young ladies) to best promote the individual in a business setting, how to confidently speak about oneself in public and how to correctly manage a dining experience with the appropriate etiquette. The students enjoyed themselves enormously and made some good friends in the process. Our Year 10 students will participate in a Resume Writing Workshop on Monday 2 June 2014 to again hone their skills in preparation for their future careers. Those students who are interested will also have the opportunity to attend a Mock Interview to practice their

public speaking skills and interview techniques in a ‘realistic’ setting at the Tumbarumba Community Church on Friday 6 June 2014. It is important that our students embrace these experiences and participate readily to give themselves the best chance when seeking employment opportunities or other future tertiary pathways. We thank Ms Rebekah Pholi, Careers Adviser at Tumbarumba High School, for her time and generosity for including us in her Career Planning program.
In Week 6, Stage 5 Subject Selection booklets will be issued to our Year 8 and Year 9 students so they can make their subject selections for 2015. Year 9 students will have the option to continue with their current courses in Year 10 or change electives if they feel that a change of course is beneficial. College I students will have the opportunity to confirm or change the choices that they had made previously for the 2015 Higher School Certificate course of study. The current Year 10 will select their subjects for the 2015 Higher School Certificate year and will tentatively select courses of study for 2016. Year 10 students, like the current College I students, will have the chance next year to confirm or make necessary changes to their subject selections. These Course Selection booklets will also be issue next week. Stage 5 Electives and HSC courses will run depending on student numbers. Courses for 2015 will be decided when all selection forms have been returned and student numbers processed. Please return all selection forms by Friday 13 June 2014to Mrs Crelley.
Good luck to our Secondary Zone Cross Country Competitors and our Primary School athletes who will participate in the Zone Athletics Carnival at Tumut next Friday. We wish you all the best!

GENERAL SCHOOL NEWS
CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONS
Jack Gould and Riley Gould have both been successful in reaching the next level of Cross
Country. Riley won the 8/9 year age event while Jack was once again triumphant in the
11 year boys event.
Both boys will now travel to Deniliguin for the Riverina Cross Country.
YEAR 9/10 DEBATING
On Friday 30 May 2014, the Year 9/10 debating team Dakota Armitstead-Hansen, Connor Jeffrey, Samantha
Wilesmith and Taylah Bowman were successful in winning the first round of the Premiers Debating Challenge.
Our 9/10 debating team were up against fierce competition from
Tumut High school who put up a good argument on the topic: “that all
schools should have CCTV cameras in areas where students
congregate”.
Unfortunately for Tumut High School, the Batlow Technology School
debater’s arguments were more compelling resulting in a sound
victory. The 9/10 debating team would like to thank Mrs Fiona Cooper
as Madame Adjudicator and the Library staff for their assistance. Well
done to these debaters and good luck in the next round.
YEAR 9/10 DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
This semester, the class has been working with natural products to produce dyes.
We have used bark, leaves, berries, beetroot and rusty nails to produce dyes. We
have also used synthetic dye to show the difference in depth of colour. Students
dyed silk and cotton scarves in their own designs and loved the results. Our next
project will be painting with ceramic paints on tea cups and plates.
OPEN GIRLS TOUCH FOOTBALL TEAM
Batlow Technology School’s open girl’s touch football team have qualified for the

Congratulations to the following students who were successful in the SRC
elections for 2014. The SRC is the student group that reflects student opinion
and acts on student requests when possible. Membership of the SRC provides
the opportunity for students to develop leadership skills which they will be
able to use throughout their lives. The SRC makes suggestions, takes action,
raises funds, promote ideas and gives students' a voice on issues.
These students will be presented with their badges and take the Batlow
Technology School Pledge at the Principal’s Assembly in Week 8.
