On reflecting our learning as a senior student at Hillston Central school, we realised how fortunate we are to be presented with the many learning and extra-curricular opportunities offered to our students. Hillston Central School is one the 6 schools in the Riverina Access Partnership. The Riverina Access Partnership is a cluster of central schools including Ardlethan, Ariah Park, Barellan, Hillston, Lockhart and Oaklands, that work together to provide opportunities for isolated senior secondary students. Students may be taught by a teacher from another school, studying a combination of lessons via videoconferencing, lessons with a supervising teacher at their local school, and self-directed study lessons. Access classes also involve compulsory study days at one of the six schools each term. All senior classes are part of the Access Partnership for assessment and staffing purposes. Hillston Central has 2 Access studios dedicated to video-conferencing lessons, plus a Connected Classroom and 2 Vocational Education videoconferencing facilities, Information Technology and Hospitality.

Learning through this forum provides a greater selection of subjects, provides opportunities to form new friendships and helps to prepare us for the future as independent learners ready to take on the world!

SCHOOL NEWS Walk Safely To School Day 2019

Walking to school has health benefits for children and adults. This

Thursday we will lead Walking Buses from two meeting places in

Hillston, departing from each by 8:30am.

If you would like the bus to drop your child off in order to

participate, you will need to give the bus driver written

permission (legalities we can’t avoid).

Students are invited to wear Hi Vis (with full school uniform

underneath).

WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON THURSDAY, 16

MAY 2019

Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts

talking about walking!

Not only is walking a wonderful way to get you where you want to

be, but it also gets your health – and your child’s health on the

right track too. So that’s why this year our school is participating in

National Walk Safely to School Day on Thursday 16 May 2019.

Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport

habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy,

active way to get around. And although walking all the way to

school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out

how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine.

You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:

- Walking with them the whole way to school

- If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on

at the next stop

- If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the

school and walk the rest of the way.

Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them

(and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease,

behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives

you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave

around roads and traffic.

Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own

Walk Safely to School Day journey for Thursday 16 May 2019!

Hillston Central School students will be joining 1 million students

across Australia in the National Simultaneous Storytime on

Wednesday the 22nd of May.

Technological Possibilities

Stage 5 English dialled into the Sydney Writers Festival to listen to

a lecture by Toby Walsh (UNSW) on the effects Artificial

Intelligence is having on our society. This introduced students to

concepts they could use to influence the science fiction short

story they are writing for their assessment task this term.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Piano students had fun designing their own Mother’s Day

compositions. They composed their own rhythms using a C major

pentascale, making sure the melody flowed throughout the entire

piece. They also got to try their hand at creating some lyrics to go

with their songs. It was great to see students embracing the

challenge and letting their creativity shine through music.

SPORTS NEWS STEPHANIE SCOTT MEMORIAL SHIELD / U/15’S BILL TURNER SOCCER COMPETITION

It was a honour for Hillston Central School to host the Stephanie Scott Memorial Soccer carnival on Thursday. The carnival was played in

good spirit by all who attended as we reflected on Stephanie Scott, her legacy and how she would have wanted the games to be played.

The Hillston girls under 15’s team faced Leeton HS in their first match. The teams were very evenly matched with some outstanding

play. Hillston was first to score early in the game with some great speed in the attack by Amelia and Kaitlin which saw them have plenty

of possession and plenty of attempts at the goal. The persistence of the attack was equally supported throughout the field with Jordan

and Bessie doing a great job in the mid field covering a large amount of the field and of course our defensive team of Ukaipo, Markaya,

Chantal, Katie and Lily (GK) was unstoppable in the first half backing up continuously when Leeton got a run on the ball. Unfortunately

the second half was a different story as Leeton stepped up their attack putting even more pressure on our defensive team, hungry to

score and they did, twice in quick succession, turning the game around to favour Leeton. The Hillston team fought had to hold them out

for the remainder of the game, but it was taxing and as the girls tired, Leeton went onto win the Match 3-1.

Shortly after the first match Hillston backed up to play St Francis, a well formed team of players who demonstrated a good level of skill,

they were quick to move the ball and very keen to find the back of the net.

Once Hillston found their legs and some energy following their match against Leeton they defended well to hold St Francis out of the

goals for a short time and even had a few attempts of their own with Kai, Markaya and Jordan all coming close to seeing a score.

Unfortunately despite our efforts throughout the field we went down to St Francis 6-2 in a great game which was not reflected by the

final score.

A big congratulations to all the new comers to the Hillston side Klare, Tiffany and Maddison who all played very well in their very first

game of soccer, it was great to see you all in their having a go and making such a difference on the field. The best on the field for the

girls were Markaya Dalton for her unstoppable effort in defense and to Lily Taylor who was courageous in goalie, great work Hillston!

"A Boisterous Effort"

U15 boys had two tough match-ups against Hay and St Francis, however they demonstrated resilience and determination as they fought

to win the ball at every opportunity. Against Hay, a few Hillston students went above and beyond to ensure the other teams needed to

work extra hard to achieve success. As is Keefe tradition, Lachlan was the stand-out as captain. He held firm as sweeper and controlled

the back line, which undoubtedly caused headaches for the opposition. At 0-3 down he was sent up the front to get one back for the

home team, and immediately slotted a screamer from outside the 18 yard box into the top left corner. David Taylor was energetic on the

wing and constantly created opportunities for himself and his team. Similarly, Sohan Pavuluri exhibited heart and a never-say-die attitude

as he chased down his opponent all match. He was almost rewarded with a goal in the second half, however nerves got the better of him

at the finish. Unfortunately, the score was 1-5 against, however without James MacDonald's efforts, the deficit would have been much

worse. His reactions were fast, but more impressive was his ability to listen to advice and adjust his game to be a more imposing keeper.

Despite the lessons learnt from the first game, the second game was a white-wash. St Francis appeared less like a school-boy team, and

more like a well-oiled machine. Their control, skills and teamwork were far too superior for our level, which was reflected by the

scoreline, although it need not be mentioned in public.

The entire team is to be commended for an outstanding effort. The boys can only improve for our next match, whenever it may be.

Mr Cooper- Coach.

SPORTS NEWS RAP TENNIS KNOCKOUT

The boys and girls RAP tennis teams played in the Griffith Gala Day last Monday. Barellan was well represented in both teams with 7 of

the 8 members hailing from Barellan.

Jane (BCS), Paige (BCS), Chelsea (BCS) and Ukaipo (HCS) played Murrumbidgee High School and won some great games to take the match

35 games to 23. The girls have now progressed straight through to the Finals round and will take on Wagga HS.

Norm (BCS), Jake (BCS), Tait (BCS) and Sapan (BCS) teamed up to play Yanco Ag in their first match, which they took out 47 games to 18.

The boys then faced off against Murrumbidgee High School and also won this match 35 games to 19. The boys also have progressed to

the Finals Round where they will meet Finley HS.

The Finals round will be held in Culcairn on Thursday 30th May (date to be confirmed).

Well done to these students and thank you to Julie, Tina, Kathy and Tina (Hillston) for transporting and assisting both myself and the

students at the tournament.

Mrs Conlan | Barellan Central School

OPEN BOYS SOCCER CHS KNOCKOUT

On Tuesday the Open Boys Soccer team travelled to Griffith to take on Murrumbidgee Regional High School in the CHS knockout. Our

boys knew it would be a tough challenge to take on the newly combined forces of the ex Wade and Griffith High Schools who have

dominated the competition in the past. To their credit they came into the game with a positive approach and ready to throw everything

at them. While we didn't get too many scoring opportunities the forwards did plenty of work and chased hard and competed for every

ball lead by Lachlan, Damian and Dylan. Our midfield played extremely well with Simran, Jordan and Connor K doing everything asked of

them and helping out younger players that were around them. Our back line headed up by

Connor L and Blake kept trying all day. Our super subs that were moved around to cover

holes in Flynn, Ben and Sohan all showed lots of promise for the future. We rotated three

goalies throughout the match with all making contributions Justin with his big clearing kick,

Jordan with some great saves and Connor diving around everywhere to get the ball. While

we went down in the end by a number of goals, it was great to see the boys not give up and

wanting to score and to see them enjoying their soccer. A HUGE thank you to Bruce Shields

for volunteering to drive the bus, we really appreciated it.

ENGLISH NEWS G'day, Hillstonites!

My name is Luke Kains, it is lovely to formally introduce myself to you all. Over the last term I have had the pleasure of teaching

many of your intelligent and caring children about the wonders of the English language and why it's important to learn about it in

21st Century Australia. While I have been here for quite some time, I thought that now was a great opportunity to share some of the

fantastic work that our Stage 5 superstars have been creating.

If you were unaware, Stage 5 students were studying Aboriginal & Torres Islander poetry and songs in term 1 and in term 2 they

have begun to delve into the fascinating genre of Science Fiction.

Last term, they were issued an assessment task where they were required to create a haiku (Japanese poetic structure consisting of

3 lines with 5,7,5 syllables) showing their deep knowledge of the town. I was thoroughly impressed with the effort that the students

put into their work and I was wanting to share some of their works over the next few weeks.

The first one I would like to share with you is from the author, James Harding. It is titled Hillston at Dawn:

Hillston at Dawn

Beautiful pink sky.

It’s peaceful, too quiet, cold.

Smells damp from the dew.

Additional information:

All of your children are encouraged to submit their work to me a week before their assessment tasks due for preliminary feedback.

If they seek feedback they will be provided with specific points they can address in their work to improve their marks.

Both Stage 4 and Stage 5 received their assessment tasks in Term One and have been provided opportunities in class to complete

them before the due dates.
