PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

NAIDOC Week Celebrations – Gurrawin Incursion

Yesterday, our whole school was involved in an Indigenous Cultural Experience provided by Gurrawin. The day was packed with many fun hands-on experiences as students participated in four workshops throughout the day. Students danced, learnt about indigenous artefacts, planted out native trees and participated in dream time stories. As you can see from the photos everyone had loads of fun.

Education Week 2021

Education Week 2021 is a state-wide, annual event to celebrate NSW Public Education which will be held 26 – 30 July (Week 3, Term 3) this year. The week communicates the achievements of public schools, their students and the value of Public Education. This year, the theme is ‘Lifelong Learners’ and celebrates education as a lifelong journey. At Wilberforce Public School, we will celebrate in many ways and we encourage our community to be involved. We will determine closer to the date what we will be able to do within COVID guidelines. Keep an eye out in Week 1 for more details.

Athletics Carnival

Providing COVID restrictions allow it, our super fun Athletics Carnival will be on Friday 23rd July at school. Field events will be held in Week 1 during class sport. The P&C is asking for volunteers at the carnival to assist with some food stalls. We are also looking for ribbon presenters and timekeepers. These fun activities are almost impossible to run without help from parents, family members or friends. Any help would be appreciated. Please support the school and P&C with half an hour of your time by booking at www.schoolinterviews.com.au Using

the code: a4dvr

We will inform you closer to the date if parents are allowed to attend as spectators. Parents wanting to take students home at the conclusion of the carnival must ensure students are signed out with their class teacher or supervising teacher for the day.

Assembly and COVID-19 Restrictions

With the restrictions which came out yesterday, parents are NOT able to attend this week’s assembly. We will be zooming the assembly and the link will be emailed out today. The following guidelines have also been implemented.

• Non-essential school visitors are not able to come onto school grounds. We ask all parents to meet their child outside the gates. Please do not enter school grounds unless it is essential.

• All school visitors must wear a mask, including parents for prearranged meetings. Essential school visitors must continue to check in via the Service NSW QR code app or sign in for each visit and comply with the department’s COVID safe requirements, including personal hygiene, infection control and 1.5m physical distancing requirements, while on the school site.

• Staff and students in school settings are exempt from the requirement to wear masks, however individuals should be supported to wear masks if it is their preference to do so.

• All events involving the community are on hold. Information about events planned for Term 3 will be advised early next term.

• Students and staff should not attend work or school if unwell, even with mild symptoms of COVID -19. Any person with any COVID-19 symptoms should be sent home and should not return until they have received a negative test result and are symptom-free. In circumstances where children have other medical reasons for recurring symptoms, a letter from their GP is sufficient to negate the requirement for a negative test.

• In the event of a positive COVID-19 result, you must notify the school immediately.

A Term 3 calendar has been emailed along with newsletter and can also be found on Skoolbag, however, these events may change as COVID guidelines are updated.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

Parent-Teacher interviews were held on Monday and Tuesday. Thank you to our parents and carers who were able to make an appointment to discuss your child’s learning and progress and thank you to the parents of Year 3-6 students who flexibly changed to phone interviews. I hope you were proud of your child’s growth and achievements and have some new learning goals to focus on into the future. If you were unable to attend, please contact your child’s teacher to make arrangements for an interview at a suitable time.

Share Our Space

It is back! We’re proud to be participating in Share Our Space these July school holidays and we encourage you and your families to come and enjoy our playground and open space. Open from 8am, Monday 28th June – Friday 9th July. Grounds and play equipment will be cleaned and safety checked regularly over this time, but we ask parents to accompany children at all times. Keep in mindalso. That this opportunity may change in line with any updated COVID restrictions. Please ensure you look after our school and report and issues to school security on 1300 88 00 21

STAGE NEWS

Early Stage 1

It has been a wonderful semester in Kindergarten, and we have been learning each day. The students have been making steady progress in all areas of their learning. Kindergarten enjoys numeracy lessons and have made steady improvements this semester.

Numeracy Groups

Elephant Panda Fox Forwards Camels

The TNT graphs show 87% students working at Kindergarten expectation (Panda) or above (Fox and Forwards Camel). Our Fox group has grown by 37% in 10 weeks. We have supported 57% of Elephants to achieve Panda level. In writing 55% students still need to achieve Kindergarten expectation (to be a Fish by the end of the year), whilst 20% students are already working beyond stage level.

Next term we will focus on blending and segmenting words, editing our work and various counting on strategies. We will also put emphasis on personal skills such as mindfulness, confidence and resilience. We are looking forward to a term full of personal and academic growth. Have a safe and restful holiday. Term 3 resumes Tuesday 13th July.

Stage 1

This term, Stage 1 has been very busy engaging in lots of exciting and wonderful learning opportunities. Highlights included the school cross country, visits from the Sydney Thunder and Gurrawin Indigenous Group, and our excursion to Brewongle. In English, we focused on the Super Six Comprehension strategies, visualisation and questioning, and well as learning to write recounts, descriptions and information reports. The Ice Cream descriptions were mouth-watering!

In Mathematics, we continued with TNT (Targeting Numeracy Time), developing our skills and strategies in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We are incredibly proud of how hard the students have been working in TNT lessons. 100% of students in Year 1 are achieving Figurative or beyond. 93% of students in Year 2 are achieving Counting On or Beyond.

We also learnt about position, 2D shapes, data, chance and fractions. In Science, Mrs Garrow taught us about living things, and we used our knowledge to build our own habitat models which are currently on display in our classrooms. They are awesome! We look forward to another exciting term next year and hope you all have a wonderful holiday break. Remember, if you need to contact your child’s teacher, please make arrangements through the front office.

Stage 2

The Stage 2 excursion to The Rocks was one of the highlights of our history learning in Term 2. It was interesting to visit the area that was settled at the landing of the First Fleet in 1788 and to imagine what life was like for the Aboriginal people and for the British settlers more than two hundred years ago. The students donned costumes as convicts, free settlers and officers and we walked the streets of The Rocks to view the old buildings and to listen to true stories about famous and infamous people of the time. We viewed boats in the harbour and realised how small the ships of the First Fleet actually were. It was fascinating to view paintings of the colony and to stand on the first established road of the settlement which originated as a walking track of the Aboriginal people.

Thank you to Mrs Bean for organising this memorable learning experience and to the parents who assisted on the day.

Stage 2 went on an excursion to The Rocks. First, we went and sat down to eat our recess. Three ladies came to us and they took us to a small stage and we put some clothes on. Lachlan was Governor Phillip and I was a convict. My name was John Cadman. I was a boat keeper so I had to look after the boats. After that, we went to where the old hospital was and it was near a candy shop. We regrouped with Stage 2 and ate our lunch under the Harbour Bridge. Then the buses came back to pick us up and drop us off at school. We got there at 3:00pm. My favourite bit of The Rocks Walking Tour was when the lady told me that I had a house from 1843. I was married to Elizabeth - she was the love of my dreams!

SPORT Last Thursday, our Stage 2 and 3 students participated in a League Tag Gala. The school sports leaders also played in the Dodgeball Gala Day. The teams showed some great skills and represented our school with distinction.

It was great to get the students involved with other schools in the area, after last year’s drought of school sports competitions. The students should be commended for their effort, commitment and sportsmanship throughout the games. Well done!
