Principal Message

Dear Parents,

This is the final newsletter for the term. We are now half way through the school year. This week we com-

pleted our annual parent/teacher interviews. We have had a very positive response from parents. We have

held 1100 interviews discussing the half yearly report and areas for development in the second half of the

year. This represents 88% of our student enrolment. If parents were unable to attend a parent/teacher in-

terview, please contact your child’s teacher to arrange a mutually convenient time after the school holiday.

Our school has continued implementing effective programs across the curriculum. We are very proud of

the strong support we receive from parents and the wider community. This partnership between teachers,

parents and students will continue in the second half of the year.

Next term we look forward to more engaging school activities including our athletics carnival, Education

Week, Book Fair, Fathers Day mufti and stall, Performing Arts Night and Celebrating The Arts concert. It

will be a very busy term.

This term we have continued with school banking. I would like to thank our banking volunteers who give up

their time each week to process students banking and record all transactions. This is a great opportunity

for our students to develop sound financial and banking habits. Students who have regular banking were

rewarded with a slurpee and prize this term. Next term we will introduce a minor change, requiring bank

books to be brought to school Friday mornings. We will return bank books each Monday.

I’d like to thank all our teachers, staff and parents who have contributed to another successful term for our

school. Enjoy a well earned break and come back refreshed ready for the third term of our school year.

Have a great holiday everyone. All the best.

Come on Parra!

Regards,

G. Walker

Session 7: 20 June 2018 Venue: ‘Sargents Challenge’ - Blacktown

On Wednesday 20 June, the Youthlink group participated in the ‘Sargents Challenge’ at the Youthlink centre in Blacktown.

The ‘Sargents Challenge’ involved problem solving games, a ‘Mine’ room and then a range of high rope activi-ties.

To start the day, the team was split into 2 groups. Group 1 completed the ‘Mine’ room. The group had to solve puzzles to receive a code. The code opened the door to the ‘Mine’ room. Once in the room, the group had to search and find keys that would unlock hidden rooms. Students worked together to finally open the last door and receive their treasure.

Group 2, worked together to complete a range of problem solving activities. Students completed team balance activities, mazes and challenges.

The groups then swapped activities before lunch.

Then it was time for lunch. All of the team worked together to cook a delicious BBQ lunch. Some students pre-pared the food and others cooked the BBQ. The sausages and kebabs were delicious.

To end the day, the group completed a high ropes course. Students had to climb a ladder and then a pole to reach the high ropes course. There were 2 course options. Both very challenging.

Youthlink Challenge Adventure Program

Session 8: 27 June 2018 – OUR LAST YOUTHLINK CHALLENGE!!!! Venue: Canoeing at Trench Reserve – Nepean River

On Wednesday 27 June, the Youthlink group participated in a day of canoeing on the Nepean River. This was the last activity for the group.

The group started the day with morning tea at the riverside and Mrs Needham made cupcakes to celebrate the great experiences the group had during the Youthlink program.

The group then received instructions from Dom and Andy about canoeing. Everyone then paired up before setting off on the canoeing adventure.

Canoeing was a little difficult at first and some groups were paddling in circles or zig- zagging across the river. After some time, everyone was finally heading in the right direction.

The group arrived at a hidden cove for lunch. The salad wraps were delicious and the camp fire kept everyone warm. Then it was time to paddle back. Everyone swapped partners and enjoyed the trip back to the reserve.

Some highlights:

Adi and Alex tipping their canoe and falling into the Nepean River. Anya and Anvi working as a team to paddle back to the reserve.

Miss Leah paddling and Monty relaxing.

Youthlink Challenge Adventure Program

On 4 July, the Youthlink group had a celebration lunch. Mrs Needham presented the group with a special pho-to frame keepsake and Dom and Andy made a video presentation of the experiences. Everyone received a cer-tificate and enjoyed a delicious pizza lunch.

A huge thank you to The Salvation Army for allowing Girraween Public School to have this amazing experience.

Term 2 Parent Workshops

‘Healthy Eating & Physical Activity’ supported by Western Sydney Local Health District. Sessions presented in Tamil and Hindi

During Term 2, Girraween Public School hosted 2 parent workshops for our Tamil and Hindi speaking families. The work-

shops were presented by Gayathri and Sapna from Western Sydney Local Health. The workshop focus was ‘Healthy Eating

& Physical Activity’.

This program provided information about the importance of maintaining good health and the prevention of diseases such as

diabetes and obesity.

The Bilingual Community Education Program is one of the major health education programs of Multicultural Health –WSLHD.

The program employs trained bilingual community educators to facilitate groups in the first language (e.g. Tamil, Hindi, Dari,

Farsi, Arabic, Chinese) of the participants.

The goals of the BCE Program are to improve the health of CALD background communities including refugees by;

· Building on knowledge about preventative health care

· Motivating individuals to take greater responsibility for their own health

· Increasing access to existing health services

· Enhancing participants’ self-esteem, confidence and well being

Testimonials :

"I am glad that I had an opportunity to collaborate with Girraween School participants to bring a fruitful

outcome from the BCE program. Sharing information and experience is a powerful tool when shared in

context which was crystal clear while working with participants. A big thank you to Kathy Needham and

Girraween staff for their mammoth support." Gayathri Jothi.

“BCE Program is very engaging and interactive. It motivates participants to take greater responsibility

for their own health and enhance their confidence, self-esteem and well-being. The Program provides a

supportive and comfortable environment to the participants. They learn about healthy living and preven-

tative health care in an enjoyable way improving their health literacy. They bring with them the desire to

learn and the program provides them”. Anoop Johar-BCE Program Officer.

“On behalf of the Multicultural Health Unit, WSLHD, Anoop Johar, BCE Coordinator and myself, I would

like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Principal, Mr G Walker, Deputy Principal, Kathy

Needham and the office staff for their strong commitment to parent education, and great support to the

BCE, all of which, enabled the groups to be run so successfully”. Sapna Lazarus
