PASIFIKAKia Orana Talofa Bula vinaka Malo e lelei Mauri Aloha Ia Orana

Warm Pasifika GreetingsIt is good to be back at school and we warmly welcome our new Pasifika sisters to the HGHS family.

There are a number of activities that Pasifika students will be involved in over this term with the most important being the inaugural Hamilton high school’s music festival. Please keep checking the regular school notices via the parent portal for more details.

One of our focus this year will be to maintain and improve on the Pasifika results from the past few years. With that in mind, please be aware that we will be focussing our energies on improved attendance at school, as well as academic mentoring.

May this term be a settled one with each of you working towards achieving your goals.

The Pasifika Council

CAREERS

All Yr13 students will be called for a career interview during the term. It is a chance to look ahead for the year and develop a plan for the transition out of school. Students can of course make their own appointments at any time.

Key dates for teritary visits and career events are published on the school website and also in the daily notices.

CAREERCENTRALYr10 - 13 students are encouraged to log on to www.careercentral.school.nz using their school log in and complete their profile page. This is a career management programme we are implementing to assist students during their time at school to manage their pathways and career exploration.

GAP YEAR PROGRAMMES Organised gap year programmes are becoming increasingly popular with senior students.

LattitudeNZ is hosting a Hamilton information evening on 14th March 7 - 8.30pm in the Long Room at Wintec House.

ARTS DEPARTMENT2019 Groups/Clubs - Visual and Performing Arts

Visual and Performing Arts Term 1 information

GATEWAYWork Experience Last year we placed a group of Year 12 and 13 students in a range of businesses in order to gain real world experience within their chosen career pathway. Students experienced opportunities in Customer Service, Personal Training, Photography, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Dentistry, Sporting Event Management, Hospitality, ECE, Primary Teaching plus many more.

This year we have even more opportunities for students to gain this type of experience. If your daughter is in Year 12 or 13 and is interested in gaining a deeper understanding of what is involved with their chosen career pathway then send them to the Careers office to collect a Gateway Work Experience application form.

We are currently searching for placements for students in a range of industries. If you are able to help then please contact Suzie Brace, Pathways Co-ordinator on [email protected] or 022 639 2614. There is no cost to you financially. The students are not paid for their placements as the focus of them is for the student to experience that industry and to support them in making some big decisions about their future.

PEER SUPPORT 2019“Recent research has suggested the more successful a transition to high school, the less impact it will have on a student's academic achievement, as stated in the Australian Journal of Language and Literacy 2017,

"well planned transition programs should not be considered something just for the "at risk" group of

students, but it is necessary for all students including those who are performing well in the primary school context".”

At Hamilton Girls’ High School we value each student’s individual educational journey. We recognise a key component to their success is the transition from Intermediate to High School. This is why we have implemented a Peer Support programme, promoting the Big sister/little sister concept within the tutor group setting. It fosters inclusion and support for all new students. The senior girls who volunteered for this programme came in during their holiday break to undertake training in the mentoring and peer support role. It was a great morning lead by the Kahui Ako staff with everyone connecting around the common goal of supporting our new Year 9s. This programme will continue to run through to week 6 of this term, culminating in a Singing assembly with the Y13 students modelling how to sing with pride.

REALISING POTENTIAL EVENING 2019Providing an inclusive learning environment is a key focus for our staff at Hamilton Girls’ High School. We value and nurture all girls in our learning community to ensure “success for all”. We were very excited to welcome the whanau of the Y9 Realising Potential girls into the Hillary Learning Hub this week, to share our aspirations with the school community and introduce the amazing team that will be working with Y9RP. It was an opportunity to meet and build the connections between the staff and students, sharing their common goals. The mantra “it takes a village to raise a child” is particularly pertinent in today’s world, supporting our akonga to realise their true potential.

IGNITE AND INNOVATE EVENING 2019Igniting a passion for learning and fostering the 3 Cs - critical thinking, creativity and curiosity is the key goal for the Y9 Ignite and Innovate classes in 2019. We value the varied and accomplished kete our girls bring into our school community and want to add to this and continue to broaden their learning journey. It was great to see a large turn out of parents for our Ignite and Innovate welcome evenings. The staff teaching these classes shared their programme of learning key aspirations for our Ignite girls. Mashhurakhon the GATE prefect also shared her learning experience at Hamilton Girls’ High School and shared her hopes for her final year at school.

TERM 1 / WEEK 3 ISSUE #1 2019

For the benefit of our new students and whanau we will revisit our eVision:For students to be confident, responsible digital citizens who are collaborative, critical thinkers who are able to construct knowledge

We are currently in our sixth year as a BYOD school; our students are expected to have their own device so they have access to all learning opportunities on offer. Our Year 9 students will have received a ‘BYOD Passport’ on their first day at HGHS. There are nine tasks for them to complete to ensure they have the basic IT skills necessary to use our eLearning tools; our peer support programme is helping students who require assistance. Schoolwide, we continue to use Schoology as our Learning Management System. It is an expectation that all courses actively use Schoology; hence, information such as Course Outlines, resources, practice papers etc. can be accessed in one place. Schoology allows students the online benefits of ‘anytime’, ‘anywhere’ learning.

All our students have access to numerous Google apps, including their school email (gmail). One of the BYOD passport tasks is to create subject folders in their G Drive to help manage their school work. We encourage our students to take advantage of the free Google Apps and unlimited storage available to them. We provide IT assistance for students in the library on Tuesday and Thursday at Interval.
