Have we done this before??
48 years ago KPPS opened with just the main building in place. There was no Collins Reserve,
many houses or roads in the area. Some land was empty other parts were market gardens.
There were snakes and other animals inhabiting our space. The school slowly grew to 800
students. Portable buildings lined the edge of the oval and where the hall and Chase Peerman
playground is located. The Southern Unit was its own separate Junior Primary School. Student
numbers then declined to around 150 before climbing back to our current numbers. Theres
been high achieving students, staff romances, parent netball teams, the South Asian Village and
much more.
How do we know all of this? From our resident historian and cleaner, Helen Smith. Helen has
been here since the day the doors opened 48 years ago. For nearly 40 years Helen had the
contract to clean the school. The department then decided to outsource all cleaning and we
said farewell to Helen. But then she returned employed by the new contractors!
Helen has trained all of us to do it her way (well she thinks she has!) Helen has always been
fussy about clean desks, has been our security person by being in the school during the holidays
and hides the glitter or any other items that makes a mess. There is lots we could say, but the
most important is thankyou to a person who has treated our school as her second home and
family. A person who puts in more than required, cares for our facilities and who has always
loved a chat!
Many of you wont know that Helen had a fall at KPPS last year that resulted in a hip
replacement. At 80++ years of age youd think its time to retire. But not Helen, shes moving to
Lockleys North Primary working reduced hours!
We will miss Helen be prepared for far more glitter being used in the Southern Unit!
DECISIVE ACTION FROM OUR STUDENTS Our Student Action Teams are now up and running with groups of students collaborating and
planning to make a difference to our school. Well done to Peter, Tricia, Sandra, Noeleen, Terry,
Desy and Denys for taking the time to support our student groups. Check out what our teams
have been doing on pages 18 - 21.
HOW IS YOUR CHILD PROGRESSING? Reports are sent home at the end of next term with interviews held at the beginning of term
three. If you have any concerns or questions about your childs learning then please email the
appropriate teacher for a phone chat or face to face meeting.
EASTER RAFFLE Thanks to the generosity of our school community we have been inundated with donations for our Easter raffle. We now have 5 Easter baskets for prizes (check them out in the front office). Tickets and money need to be returned by today (31st March), with the raffle being drawn at Kidmanathon. A big thankyou again to everyone who donated items and a special thankyou to Luciana H (u4) and her parents, Joshua Y (rm7) and his parents, Josh P(rm 10) and Daniel P (u4) of Joes Pizza Bar and James V (rm 11) and Emma V (u2) of Cupcakes & More for donating the major prizes.
Farewell Helen!

BRINGING MEDITATION TO THE CLASSROOM
The aim of guided mediation is to present children with an
environment that the emotions in their minds release a feeling of
comfort and safety. It also offers each individual a place of personal
ownership where they can come to feel endless calmness, joy,
happiness and all the pleasant feelings that gives them a sense of fulfilment.
Classes this week used visualisation - children were asked to close their eyes and
imagine: A peaceful place, a safe place, a magic place where they feel
comfortable and imagine what they might see and sounds they might hear.

CANTEEN NEWS
It has been a great start to the year in the canteen, from fresh salads to hot
foods, so keep your orders coming!
Firstly a big thankyou to all volunteers; the new, the regulars and the
parents who have put their names down to help. Without these generous
people our canteen could not function.
We are ready for the Kidmanathon sausage sizzle on Thursday, it is sure to
be a great success.
The first Friday of next term we are holding a Showdown Donut day, so
support your team and get a Crows or Port donut! This is one of the schools
allowed Red Days. Order forms will come out later this week, so keep an
eye out for them.

Friday, February 27th 2015 the school participated in Clean Up
Australia Day. Our class P1 made a graph from 2013-2015 of the
rubbish found in the Chase Peerman Park.
It was our responsibility to count all the rubbish and add different
types of rubbish found to the graph. We discovered that 2015 had a
dramatic increase of food packets and also had an increase of cling
wrap, paper bags and tissues.
On the bright side there was a decrease of ice block sticks, drink
containers, paper, cardboard, tins and packaging.
We have come up with a range of ideas to reduce litter in the yard
and we will pass these on to the sustainability group to discuss. Some
of the ideas are the possibility of having a bin on the oval, replace
yellow spots with picking up rubbish or having an eating time before
recess.

Kidman Blue teas has improved all term with their fielding and bowling, claiming lots of
wickets in the last game. Matthew nearly got a hat trick (one more and it would have been)
and thats with the help of the team. It was great to play against our school and to see all the
parents praising both teams with the batting, catches and almost catches. Well done to all

Findon High School Visit Reflection On the 13th of March 2015, P1 and year 7s from P2 visited Findon High School
where we did two lessons and experienced a day at high school. At 9am the bus
arrived at school to take us to Findon High School. When we arrived at the school
we went to the Maria Daley Shelter, where the organiser Lyn Meynell was waiting
for us. She talked to us about the school and showed us a room where we can put
our bags. She split us into groups and three Findon High students took us for a tour
around the school. On the tour we saw all the different class rooms like the Maths
room, the Home EC room and the Technical Studies room. We also saw where the
toilets, the canteen and the office were. After the tour we went back to the Maria
Daley Shelter to have our recess at 10:30am.
When we finished recess we were split back into our big groups. Our group went
to the Technical studies lesson and the other group went to the Maths lesson.
In the Maths lesson the students played a game on the computer called Bug on a
Wire then recorded seconds taken and check the mean, medium and mode.
We walked in the Technical Studies room and the teacher in the class introduced
himself to us, his name was Mr. Williams. He told us what they do in the class,
which is wood work and what we are going to make, a key ring holder. First we
had to choose a partner, my partner was Sebastian. Then we collected our equip-
ment. The equipment that we used included a saw, a pencil and a ruler. We had to
get a piece of wood and find the centre of it with a ruler and cut it in half with a
saw. One half was for me and the other half was for Sebastian. After that I cut the
two top corners of my piece of wood with a machine. I went to the sanding ma-
chine and sanded the edges. Then I sanded the rest with sanding paper. I got a nail

ISIT After lunch both groups went to the seminar room and did an activity where there
was a long piece of paper and we had to write what we should have more at our
school, what we enjoyed about Findon High School and give a score out of ten. For
what we should have more at our school I wrote down P.E and computer studies, for
what we enjoyed about the school I wrote down wood work and for the score out of
ten I gave 7/10. We went to our second lesson Geography and the other group went
to Home EC. When we went in the class the teacher introduced himself to us, his
name was Mr. Hill. He showed us a website called Tour Builder:
(https://tourbuilder.withgoogle.com/), where you can show the route of your trip.
When he finished showing us tour builder he took us out for P.E to play a game of
soccer in their hall. When the game of soccer ended we went back to the Maria Daley
Shelter and got our bags to get ready to go on the bus back to school.
At Home Economics the students tasted food blind folded and had to rely on their
other senses to guess the food eaten.
Throughout the day I enjoyed the experience of high school. I had fun and really
enjoyed doing the wood work. My favourite part was when our group played a big
game of soccer in their hall. Thanks Findon High for the experience. by Nicholas

S The Adventure Play Area Action Team The Adventure Play Area Action Teams main focus is to design a new adventure
play area for the south west corner of the school.
The Adventure Play Area Action Team have taken a walk around the school through the school play areas using our senses to see what sounds and sights were the same and what was different. Did you know that each play space is different and the plants and environment attract different birds and animals and the play equipment is different. In the south west area of the school we could also see that students at Kidman Park like to dig the dirt, collect natural objects like tree bark, rocks and plants, look for small animals, move the wooden logs around, listen and look at the birds in the trees. So what will the Adventure Play Area look like? We are not sure yet. But we have started to think about it. The Adventure Play Area Action Team have found some good ideas to help our thinking about the play area. Some good ideas include - Nature natural things
Stream of Water
Dirt for digging Trees for shade and plants to attract birds and animals
Rocks
Different areas with different plants
Plants to touch and smell Places for all students including the Learning Centre to come into the adventure play area Safe places This is a big job but its exciting and our team is to help make this happen for our school. So, the next time you are visiting a park, beach or in your backyard stop and take time to look around and listen, for ideas for our Adventure Play Area. We want you to be involved too. We want to hear about how you use this area and also your ideas. So soon we will be sending out surveys to gather this information.
