Week 11
Principal’s Message
Term 2 Starting Dates
I hope all our students and families have a fantastic holiday. Return dates for TERM 2 are as follows; Teachers return on Monday 30th April for Staff Development Day (Pupil
Free Day). Students return on Tuesday 1st of May.
Term 1 2018 in Review
Congratulations everyone – students, staff and community members for your
efforts during this term. What a fabulous way to start 2018. Our students are
actively engaged in meaningful and challenging learning experiences delivered
by a strong, dynamic teaching team. Our teachers demonstrate a passion and
deep understanding of teaching content while having high expectations for
every student. One of the highlights this term has been welcoming our new
Kindergarten students to ‘big school’. To see them settle in to routines, devel-
op new friendships and engage enthusiastically in the variety of learning pro-
grams has been rewarding not only for the Kindergarten teachers, but for all
staff and peers.
Winter Uniform Changeover
Depending on the weather at the beginning of Term 2, students can wear ei-
ther summer or winter uniform but should be in FULL SCHOOL WINTER UNI-
FORM for school photos being taken on 31 May (Week 5).
I am excited to see the outcome of the Uniform survey. Thank you to all the
families who participated in the survey your input ensured a true indication of
the preference for our unisex uniform option. The overall results indicated a
75% preference for the selected option in both the short and the pant op-
tion. The addition of Pants to the winter uniform and shorts to the summer will
allow the girls a greater degree of freedom in the playground and physical ac-
tivity. Thank you to all the parents who completed the survey. Thank you also
to the P&C uniform committee especially to Suzanne, Steve and Karina for
their efforts.
ANZAC Day Assembly –
The Wideview Public School ANZAC day assembly will be held tomorrow 13th
at 2pm in the school hall. We break with the tradition of holding it in front of
our flag pole due to the hot weather forecast. All students in years K-6 will be
attending. Parents, carers and community members are invited to attend.

NAPLAN testing National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing is taking place in Week 3 next term,
from Tuesday, 15th May to Thursday, 17th May. All students in Year 3 and 5 are assessed using a national
test in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy.
Opportunity Classes Opportunity Classes (OC) cater for highly achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be
without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These classes help gifted and talented
students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised
ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. These classes are outside of our school.
Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Oppor-
tunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on
Wednesday 1 August 2018.
If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2019, you need to apply
soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).
Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from Tuesday 1 May 2018 at
https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5.
The application website opens on Tuesday 1 May 2018 and closes on Friday 18 May 2018. No late applica-
tions will be accepted.
There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library.
If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance
after 1 May 2018.
New Parent Payments and School Communication Platform (School Bytes)
Important news regarding future communication & fee reminders!
Wideview School has commenced using a new third party management platform called School Bytes, for
communicating and facilitating, email notifications, permission slips, fee reminders and other important in-
formation. School Bytes is currently being taken up by many schools and being improved regularly.
The program allows us to email parents with their own separate link to see all applicable due payments.
This is still linked to Westpac but here you can select exactly what you are paying, taking a lot of the guess
work out of it. If at anytime you do not have the email or link handy, you can still go through the POP option
from our website, you just won’t get the extra detail.
We will also use this platform to send out future permission notes, for parents to download and print. We
are hoping this will save a lot of printing and keep parents better informed and more up to date. If printing is
an issue for anyone, a printed copy is always available. You can either ask your child to request one from
their teacher or reply to our email that you require a hard copy.
To ensure you receive these notifications, please add Wideview Public School email
[email protected] to your contacts to avoid them going to your junk or spam folders.

Sydney North Rugby League Florimo Gala Day
We were so close to winning the Florimo Cup!
Our senior boys were beaten 4-3 in golden point by Willoughby Public School in the grand final. With scores
locked at 3 a-piece, extra time was required to crown this year’s Florimo Cup winners. With a few minutes of
extra time, after a day of playing valiantly against a number of schools in 30 degree heat, Willoughby crashed
over with a try for a well-deserved victory. Our boys had conducted themselves with great steel and tenacity.
All of our students had a wonderful experience at the Sydney North Gala Day competing in the Florimo,
Larsen and Jessica Palmer Cups at Montview Oval, Hornsby Heights on Monday.
Our 2018 campaign saw over 50 students represent our school at this gala day. For many students it was
their first experience of playing rugby league or touch football. Many teachers and parents commented on
the positive play of our students as well as the great sportsmanship demonstrated by our school. Naturally
these comments made Mr Harpur and Parks beam with pride.
Special thanks to Mr Gins, Mr Brown and Mr Summerhayes for coaching our teams on the day and for the
Berowra Wallabies for assisting and supporting our students with training and the use of their equipment.
We wanted to especially thank all the parents that came to cheer Wideview.
Hopefully we can go one better in 2019!
Mr Parks
On Monday, 5 brave teams from Wideview headed down to Hornsby to play in the Florimo Football Gala
Day. There were 2 senior boys teams, 1 junior boys team, 1 senior girls and 1 junior girls team. It was an ex-
tremely warm day which tested everyone’s fitness levels. All of the teams performed to the best of their abil-
ities; they demonstrated great team work and some impressive talent. The senior boys team made the grand
final against a strong Willoughby team. At full time the score was 3 all, so it went into ‘golden try’. Unfortu-
nately Willoughby snuck in a try to take out the title.
We’d like to thanks the parents for their coaching support on the day. They did an incredible job!

MultiLit Reading Program We need parent, grandparent or community volunteers!
At Wideview Public School we are extending our literacy programs to include MultiLit. There will be two pro-
grams introduced in Term 2 for students Years 1 to 6. These include;
MiniLit MiniLit is a special teaching program designed for young children in Years 1 and 2. The program is offered in
small groups of children to help refine their reading skills.
MacqLit MacqLit provides the same opportunities as MiniLit for children in Years 3 to 6.
How can you help?
As part of these programs we require volunteers to read with individual students for 20 minutes per day. We
will provide training for all volunteers in best practice strategies for assisting readers. Volunteers are appreci-
ated at any time of the day, any day of the week.
If you are interested in volunteering please contact Lisa Hayward or Michelle Anthonisz via email or phone
the school on 94561655.

We are still selling the last of the popcorn from the movie night. It is now reduced to 3 bags for $5,
Michelle Bowden will be in the Infants playground selling them on Friday.
Michelle has also organised the entertainment book to be sold as a fundraising opportunity, please
find more details below. Feel free to share the link for the entertainment book far and wide, we get
an amount from every one sold via our link and it doesn’t have to be school parents who buy the
book. I have had the digital version the last few years and found it to be a great cost savings for ac-
tivities, especially during the school holidays. Please consider purchasing to support our school.
Thank you Michelle.
