The Sermon on the Mount can help us be contemplatives in action this week. The Beatitudes are not eight new commandments. Rather, Jesus saw those follow- ing him and saw their weakness and their need, their goodness and their desire, even the cost they pay to follow him. He looked at them and called them “Blessed.” Let us all begin this week letting Jesus look at us and call us blessed. Each morning we can practice choosing to focus our attention on some way we are spiritually poor or desir- ing justice, some way we are merciful or a peace maker, some way we might be experi- encing the cost of being a believer, and simply asking our Lord to convince us of our blessedness there. It is likely that each of us, every day, can be attentive to some aspect of our daily lives, some part of our relationships or responsibilities, that place us right there in a place for Jesus to tell us that we will be comforted, satisfied, blessed beyond our im- agining. Some day this week, each of us will have the opportunity to be the salt that makes rela- tionships, faithful living, have its flavor. We will have our chances to be light in the midst of the darkness that crosses our paths. We can ask Jesus those days - whether in the morn- ing, or in brief background moments during the day - to have us not lose our flavor or to cover our light. And, all of us will face the greater responsibility of a disciple of Jesus, to avoid anger and find the path to reconciliation, to turn from lust and greed and to love genuinely and honestly.

Holiness is Courage, Hope, Daily Conversion Walk in the presence of God without reproach. We can journey towards holiness. For this commitment to succeed, Christians must be able to hope with courage, open themselves up to discus-sion and freely welcome God's grace. Holiness cannot be bought. Neither can it be earned by human strength. No, the simple holi-ness of all Christians, ours—the kind we are called to every day, can only be attained with the help of four essential elements: courage, hope, grace and conversion.

Holiness is a journey; holiness cannot be bought. It can’t be sold. It cannot be given away. Holiness is a journey to God's presence that I must make: no one else can do it in my name. I can pray for someone to be holy, but he’s the one who has to work towards [holiness], not me. Walk in God's presence, in an impeccable way. Everyday holiness can also be “anonymous.” And the first element needed to achieve it is courage: The path to holiness takes courage. Jesus’ Kingdom of Heaven is for those who have the courage to go forward and courage is generated by hope, the second element of the journey that leads to holiness. The kind of courage that hopes in an encounter with Je-sus. The third element of this journey towards holiness appears in Peter’s words: "Put all your hope in that grace:” We cannot achieve holiness on our own. No, it is a grace. Having celebrated God's love for us through the Eucharist on Sunday, we are ready to en-ter this week to explore the depth of that love and the powerful call each of us is given to love one another. The Sermon on the Mount can help us be contemplatives in action this week. The Beatitudes are not eight new commandments. Rather, Jesus saw those follow-ing him and saw their weakness and their need, their goodness and their desire, even the cost they pay to follow him. He looked at them and called them “Blessed.”

Let us all begin this week letting Jesus look at us and call us blessed. The Holy Land Bethlehem Christian Families will be here at our parish on June 11 & 12, to sell their

hand carved religious articles made of olive wood. The

sale of these precious articles supports their Church Mis-

sion which is to maintain the roots and the existence of

the Christian Families who are struggling to remain in

Bethlehem.

At least Ninety percent of the funds raised through the-

se sales go directly to Christians living in the Bethlehem

area. The proceeds will create more work which will

help them to survive and stay in the Holy Land since

they have no other source of income and are dependent

on the olive wood industry. Thank you for your support

and generosity.”

Did You Know?

Praise is just as important as providing food and shelter for a child. Praise is an important aspect of raising a confident child. When you praise a child, not only do you raise their self-esteem and self-concept but you increase their overall self-worth. One thing you can do is focus on the child and

describe what you see. For example, you can say: “You are so patient. That means a lot to your little brother.” For more tips on praising children please email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227. READINGS FOR THE WEEK
